I just had a look at the spec and it would seem that layer names are not
specified. So whilst the extensions used in Protel may be nominally the most
common they are not the only ones used.

Personally I think that you should always include layer stackup instructions
within your PCB file or in a text file that goes with the gerbers that
details the stackup etc.

Subject: [PEDA] Protel Gerber File Extensions,Are they conform to Standard
Industry Practice ???

Hi All,
My PCB vendor asks me that in order to correctly ascertain
about the identity of Top Layer and Bottom Layer, I should manually
write the string "TOP" in the Top Copper Layer and string "BOTTOM" in
the Bottom Copper Layer.
I tell him that this information is embedded in the Gerber File
extensions itself. e.g Design.GTL and Design.GBL means that these files
correspond to Top Copper and Bottom Copper Layers respectively.

I wanna ask whether this naming of Gerber file extensions by Protel
conforms to standard Industry Practice or not ?. If yes, can someone
comment about the legitimacy of my PCB Vendor's opinion that I need to
mention the layer name in text manually. ?....

Regards,
Adeel Malik.
