Wasn't that more for the benefit of the assembly workers? If a TH board was made without silkscreen to reduce costs, it was not easy to tell which was the component side. Of course, that was back in the days of all-TH, manual assembly, costly silkscreens, etc. About 20 years ago...time flies when you're having, umm, something...
