Adeel,
To directly answer your question, there is no standard for the name
extensions on Gerber files every CAD package typically does it differently.
As for your fabricators request, is it so unreasonable? It is just
another aide to ensure that they don't screw up your layer structure.

Subject: [PEDA] Protel Gerber File Extensions,Are they conform to
Standard Industry Practice ???
Hi All,
My PCB vendor asks me that in order to correctly ascertain
about the identity of Top Layer and Bottom Layer, I should manually
write the string "TOP" in the Top Copper Layer and string "BOTTOM" in
the Bottom Copper Layer.
I tell him that this information is embedded in the Gerber File
extensions itself. e.g Design.GTL and Design.GBL means that these files
correspond to Top Copper and Bottom Copper Layers respectively.
I wanna ask whether this naming of Gerber file extensions by Protel
conforms to standard Industry Practice or not ?. If yes, can someone
comment about the legitimacy of my PCB Vendor's opinion that I need to
mention the layer name in text manually. ?....
Regards,
Adeel Malik.
