Eugene Debs wouldn't be elected either. Why not accept the fact that elections in the US are a game you can't win by voting? The most the left[*] can do at this point is propaganda: if a leftist candidate got 897,011 votes (6% of the total) the way Debs did in 1912 (while in prison), that would shake up US politics. Of course, it might also bring down repression, as with the Palmer raids (1919-1921). The more leftist political pressure is put on the US political system from the outside, the more the politicians on inside will lean to the left. The trick is to avoid being seduced by those leans, most of which will be fake. -- Jim Devine / "Segui il tuo corso, e lascia dir le genti." (Go your own way and let people talk.) -- Karl, paraphrasing Dante. [*] this is the left outside of the Democratic Party. It's horrible how the media have started referring to the DP as "the left." _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
