They take months to years to take effect so would not be appropriate for a tumor that is compromising your optic nerve. In addition, they cannot be used if the tumor is too close to the optic nerve. The surgery really sounds worse than it is. Make sure that you are being treated by someone with extensive experience treating pituitary tumors (both the endocrinologist and the neurosurgeon).
