Finally got the gazebo / player / playerv to behave. For some reason the 'Enable' and 'Disable' menu items under the position2d menu did not have a checkbox beside them. So I had been simply clicking the word 'Enable'. This time I clicked where a checkbox should be and that did enable the device and I was able to then command it.
I went in and changed the menu item create in pv_dev_position2d.c and then re-compiled and now the boxes are there. There is a great Fedora 8 install guide at www.irobotics.org also.
