Barcode scanners are easy to use because it very much behaves like a keyboard. Barcode scanners also send character individually so each character is still a single keypress event. Biometrics (fingerprint scanner) is different though. I have used one using the API provided by the manufacturer and I can get image and template data. I don't know though what kind of data you can get straight from the driver.
