I've heard complains on fingerprint scanners not working all the time
or takes a lot of tries to read correctly. Another issue from the
users' side is that sometimes, the previous user has dirty or oily
fingers (which can also cause the scanner to fail).

Barcode scanners are easy to use because it very much behaves like a
keyboard. Barcode scanners also send character individually so each
character is still a single keypress event. Biometrics (fingerprint scanner)
is different though. I have used one using the API provided by the
manufacturer and I can get image and template data. I don't know though what
kind of data you can get straight from the driver.

as far as i know and with barcode scanners i have worked with, it acts as a
keyboard. can either be plug thru PS/2, IBM socket (not sure if thats the
correct name) or USB. data sent are all text like keyboards data are sent
the only difference is, keyboards send keys or by character while in barcode
it is sent by batch or the whole word.

i don't know though about biometrics scanners, haven't worked with one.

 cheers,

 John
