For Unix-based systems using PAM, there's PAM-BioAPI[1]. I've only tried
this on Thinkpads though (as its biometric finger scanner is workable
using BioAPI binary and FOSS drivers). The specifications can be found
here[2], while a schematic diagram can be found here[3].
