AMD has come a long way from its K6-II and K6-II days. Athlons are in
general faster than their Pentium counterparts, but I agree that you have to
take at least a few steps (eg. buying a good heatsink) to ensure that your
system does not overheat.  For the do-it-yourself hardware enthusiasts, this
is not a problem and even a source of great fun, but for those people who
would  just like to have their computer in place so that they can install
their software, this might be too tedious.

Personally, I'm getting an Athlon for my next upgrade coz it's cheaper and
the 1.4GHz Athlon XP even beats the Pentium 2GHz in some gaming benchmarks
(see Anandtech articles on Athlon XP). But then again, I love installing
heatsinks on CPUs. =)  So it's really up to your personal preferences.
