i just specified the ff specs for an officemate (a linux/windows user):

Athlon XP (1.4GHz+)
Motherboard with the Via Apollo KT266A chipset
at least 128 DDR RAM

--the ff are from my own setup--
1) any taiwanese video card with a GeForce2 MX chip and  
32MB of video RAM (try Inno3D brand)
2) Soundblaster Live (good 3d sound card)
3) Altec Lansing speakers with a subwoofer (ex: ACS-48 3-piece)

the components above are the 'best buy'
afaik. it wont drain your budget. and there will be no
regrets.  of course you can get better with more bucks =)
i just dont know the intel pentium equivalent now.
