Heck, Intel is even suing VIA for patent infringement because they
created a Pentium IV motherboard that is capable of using DDR RAM
instead of exclusively RDRAM. It appears they must have entered some
legal agreement with Rambus when they gave their blessing to RDRAM, and
now Intel is doing something that hurts them a lot. The existence of a
P4 motherboard capable of using DDR SDRAM instead of the incredibly more
expensive RDRAM would benefit Intel a lot, as it would drive the price
of P4 systems down a great deal (not as much as an equivalent
performance Athlon-based system though, but still...). The only reason
why a company like Intel would act against their best interests that I
can see is legal entanglements, of which Rambus has gained notoriety in
recent days (they violated the JEDEC patent disclosure rules
apparently, among the other things that came out in their lawsuits with
Infineon).
