I've been meaning to stay away from this survey-turned-flamewar, but I have some points I'd like to express:

I'd rather put a vote for no comparison. Apples and oranges sort of thing. Sure, they're both operating systems. But one's free, the other's not. One's open source, the other's proprietary closed source. And I think Linux does not have to beat Windows because the developers of Linux see absolutely no threat in Windows. A community that thrives on free software "by itself, for itself" has very little to worry about when it comes to the competition. No, Linux does NOT need us users in multitudes. The original team of hackers did what they did and had fun when there were so little of them. Or in Linus's situation, when he was alone. > Only when used as a server. But server use is not "only". Linux has its strengths, and Windows has its (for now?). The Linux kernel, together with a plethora of open source tools that run natively on it, has proven to be a stable and powerful tool for servers. > Moreover, the most important bash shell features like command line > completion as well as the powerful GNU tools are now almost all > available freely for Win32, greatly reducing Linux's lead in this area. I think you're messing things up here. The GNU tools that work on Linux work on so many other platforms. Don't talk about them. And I don't think talking about KDE or Mozilla is valid, either. They are not exclusive to Linux, are they? If you truly want to compare Linux and Windows validly, talk about CORE FEATURES of the OPERATING SYSTEM. Not GNU tools that are available everywhere and have been before Linux came around. For example, when you talk about Microsoft Office, don't associate this with Windows. It's a Microsoft product, and it's tightly tied with the OS, but it's not Windows per se. Like StarOffice never will be Linux per se. I suggest we drop this thread. As we will see, because operating systems need applications (that are not part of the operating system) to be of real value in the outside world, it's difficult to compare two operating systems without getting messed up in talking about the applications that run on them.
