The ubiquitous 1400c would be my choice for a low $$$ solution. Next, a 3400c.
Note that the 1400 is a NuBus-based machine, and although it can accept PCMCIA cards, it cannot accept CardBus cards. Note also that the 3400 is a PCI-based machine, and although it cannot, ex-factory, accept CardBus cards, it can be modified to do so. So, a 3400c is capable of USB and Firewire, with the card cage modification mentioned above, but the 1400 can never be. I know the 3500 (Kanga, G3 Series) can also be so modified, and perhaps the 2400 as well. None of these models are easily upgradeable to recordable optical drives, so an external USB or Firewire drive of your choice would probably be best.
