Yeah I plan to give the PW the one or two major fix
ups and then move on to the pismo, which because it's
actually broken is going to get more attention* then
the PW in the long run.

Was a tough choice since I knew I couldn't do both
projects at once finanically. The pismo is more
worthwhile to upgrade but the PW is in use more. I
decided ok, the pismo is the better computer to
upgrade but I've already made the choice to fix them
both up so I may as well do the one which is used more
first.

That said, I'm interested in learning about how
computers work in general so maybe I can do future
minor repairs on my computers.
I am very concerned about old computer systems being
thrown out, poluting (There's things in computers
which polute water and stuff) and the energy needed
to build new/more computers.
I think people should appreciate the resources takes
to build these things even if they can afford a new
computer every year.

I would like to encourage more fixing of older
computers and using older computers in general for the
tasks they can handle.
This doesn't mean never buy a new computer, just more
of a focus on repairing older computers so less new
computers are purchased/manufactured when not
neccesary.

It saddens me that our ecomony focuses so heavily on
just buy a new one and throw out the old thinking, as
well as computer companies making it more economical
to buy new equipment instead of repairing the old.

I'd love to fix other computers if it prevented them
from going to the dump but that's probably just the
idealist in me speaking since I have never manged to
fix anything on my own computers and hardly know the
basics of how they work.

*Beyond the scope of this mailing list maybe...
My pismo got damaged while in storage once and has a
cracked case and broken cd/dvd drive. The computer
has been checked out by my brother is is in good
working order besides this issue.
After asking around, I found that replacing the bottom
case replacment will solve the issue with the CD/DVD
drive as well.

It's ironic considering how careful I have always been
using it but such is life and I am annoyied at my
parents for taking the padded storage box which would
have prevented this but that is life too.

Plan A, I go get a new bottom case and replace it.
Anyways, I started to look around and find out
(thanks to the nice folks at the Apple support board
for the PB fixit link) hey sticking a new bottom case
on will be very complicated and may result in me (A
not very experienced tinkerer of compys ruining the
pismo.)

Ok plan B, I asked Apple repairs and they were going
to charge hundreds of dollars to replace the bottom
panel (When you consider the actual computer inside is
working just fine and all it really needs is a new
bottom case). Yuck...Ok on to plan C.

I ask my brother about getting his pismo repaired too
due to a cracked case and he said he was unable to do
the repair himself and sent it off to a place that
repaired it for around $50 and it was upgraded to a
550 processor at the same time (not within the $50 fee
I assume).

OK more reasonable for this minor repair job but I
don't like the idea of my pismo getting lost in the
mail and possibly damaged more due to bad shipping.
So on to plan D, get the upgrade items I want
(definatly an airport card and recplacement bottom
case) , and then bring the pismo to yet undecided
computer shop for them to install new items and
replace bottom case.

PW RAM issue with EDO and NOT EDO was a peice of cake
compared to that.
