I like such programs, have read about them but have my
doubts if they'd work.
I 'm thinking there's a limited of pool of people
willing to settle for older computers even if they
work fine (Which is why they end up being thrown out
in the first place). so while it's a great idea, not
sure how realistic it is. Probably most of these
people get a credit card and buy a brand new computer.

I've done some limited dumpster diving, I look what
people in my appartment complex throw out sometimes. I
know that dumpster diving can be illegal, I think it's
due to being on someones' property, not the stealing
trash issue. I would not care at all if someone came
here and took stuff out of our dumpster.

Unfortunately I think it has to do more with lawyers and lawsuits than
anything else because technically the dumpsters do not belong to the
business, but to the landfill or garbage company, so what is in the
dumpster is no longer theirs. And if the business does not have "No
Trespassing" signs it's legal to do it. I can't tell you how many
times I have said "go ahead and call the cops" to
strip mall employees who tell me "you can't do that"..... I'm a big
intimidating guy and they usually just go away mad.

One guy was supposedly the property manager for a strip mall and told
me the old "you can't do that" line. I made him show me proof of who
he was and that he had the right to tell me anything.
I thought the poor old guy was gonna have a heart attack as his
shaking hands showed me a crumpled piece of paper I couldn't even make
out what was printed on it. Just another pissy old fart who thought
he owned the place. I actually thought he was dumpster diving
compettition when I saw him and the beat up pick-up he was driving.
Didn't look like any property manager I would ever hire. The guy was
so shaking mad I though he might actually be foolish enough to take a
swing at me so I left because it was getting too insane.

Having been down that trail ... I put "No Dumping" and "NO Trespassing" signs on the dumpster because the construction fellows were filling the dumpster up with splintered 2 x 4's, chunks of concrete and other such. If there was something visibly sticking out of the dumpster that someone wanted, I'd pull it out and give it to them. Just didn't want dumpster divers cutting them self on something and the resulting lawsuit by some parasitic scum Lawyer.
