It sounds like a better approach would be to use SMTP authentication from
PowerMail, rather than running an open relay.

Under Mail Accounts..., Sending tab, check the box beside "authenticate
as user" and provide some credentials.  Or, under Mail Schedulings and
Locations..., Locations tab, check beside "always use smtp server" and
"use AUTH password".

PowerMail seems to support both LOGIN and CRAM-MD5 authentication, and
works fine with Courier MTA on my mail server.
