The old firewire on the camera debate is one that always has me rolling with
laughter on the floor. There are no doubt a couple of photographers in the
world that actually have a need of this, but the other few million of us do
not. I have connected my camera's D30/D60 via USB to my computer about twice
in two years. They have something called Memory Cards ;-) on these new
fangled cameras. One takes out the memory card, sticks it in either a
Firewire card reader or a PC card adaptor (don't buy a USB card reader,
whatever you do) and then you download the images from the card. Very simple
indeed. There can be only one use for having a firewire or usb connection on
the camera, and that is is one wanted to shoot tethered. Now why one would
want to take a very portable 35mm style camera and tie it down to a computer
via a lead is anybody's guess, but there are some masochists out there. Of
course, you may be shooting still life, in which case it could be useful,
but not essential. Or you may be shooting something where the client wants
to sit at your computer and see an instant result. Personally I'd rather
they didn't. They can wait till I show them the frame that I want to show
them.

When I first started shooting digital, I was using one of the Kodak's with a
firewire connection and had it linked to my old G3. It works fine. But I'd
never go back to working that way again. Its a pain in the butt to be
tethered by a lead (having a sync cable is bad enough!) So I would not let
this sway your decision much. Unless you really think you may need to be
tethered for some reason?

Its a great site, very good, sensible reviews.
