Just to second this. I have had more problems downloading from my D1 via
Firewire than I have had with card readers. If the camera was not resting on
a firm surface the cable moved and could cause problems.

Also on the D1 the firewire was very slow. Infact it was as slow as a USB
card reader. 

Before I made any decision, on what connection a camera had I would want to
see what the true data transfer rate was with that camera and my computer
and OS. Not some lab based maximum transfer rate.
