Its not the magnification but the way the trash and neighbouring icon will move aside to allow the bunch of icons you are dragging to the trash to end up in the dock. Though I expect this happens less with magnification off, personally I like to use it and keep the dock really small.
Nevertheless, I probably am in the wrong job ;-)
