Hi Have you formatted the drive as HFS or HFS+?
HFS has a limited number of blocks available, so a modern huge disk would tend to have a very big block size. You only need one byte over the block size for a whole extra one to be required. In fact you would get one block each for the data and resource forks and one for an icon (!)
