Have you formatted the drive as HFS or HFS+?

HFS has a limited number of blocks available, so a modern huge disk would
tend to have a very big block size. You only need one byte over the block
size for a whole extra one to be required. In fact you would get one block
each for the data and resource forks and one for an icon (!)

If I remember correctly, HFS is limited to 64k blocks, so a 128G disk would
have a 2M block size and even a small jpeg (with icon) would take up ~6M
