Apologises to those who get upset with Applemac questions, but, I'm in a bit

so I shut it down and tried to re-start it. Nothing. All I got was a pale
blue screen.

Have you tried starting up in single user mode and running 'fsck'? *Might* be forth a try.

(In case you aren't familiar with this... Reboot the machine whilst holding down the *apple* and <S> keys. Eventually unix code will appear on the screen. Try not to panic... :-) Let things settle. Then type (*without* angled brackets on one line) </sbin/fsck -f> (there is a space before -f) Then hit return.

Code will fly across the screen again. Once things have settled, see what the message is on the last line. If it says 'system was modified' or somesuch, keep running the fsck command as above until you get a message saying the disk appears to be Ok. This might take several passes.

Then type <reboot> (No brackets) and hit return.)

With luck it will boot.

Might be worth a shot in desperate times. The 'Journaling' feature in Panther should help avoid this sort of stuff.

Best of luck
