That seems to be what Apple thinks by pulling modems out of its new computers. Unfortunately it seems to be a very US-centric view.

Lots of places still have a great majority of users connecting via dial-up. I just moved to broadband a couple of weeks ago, mainly because updates are so hugs, I couldn't wait over night or worse for system updates. Broadband is still too expensive for the great majority. Most of my friends still use dialup, including some small companies I deal with. For many potential customers not in the USA or the first world, application size IS still important.
