Okay, Bill. I'll bite on this one. Following Ed K's advice to John
D. regarding investment castings for couplers, I'll take my Solid
Works package and draw up a design for a "scale" coupler. However,
I'd like to request that yourself and Jim King review my work to make
sure that it can be manufactured. I'd also like to pick your brain
about the modifications that you've made to current coupler designs.
I've got contacts with a precision casting plant here in the area and
I'm sure I can work up an arrangement to get some produced.

I have half-assembled a PRS 50' boxcar this week. Had to do some
research on the ladders (high or low?) and other details or else I'd
have gotten it all the way done. I also fabricated a set of
driveshafts for an N scale Overland SD70. The factory shafts wouldn't
transfer power (the delrin balls on the ends won't hold to the shaft),
so I took some 1/16" brass stock and drilled the ends for a piano wire
to fit in the yoke on the motor and gearbox. Fun project, but N is
just too darn small! That's been it for modeling time...

As a relative newcomer to S, I must say that I've given serious
thought to assembling the S scale kits I have purchased, selling them
and returning to N scale due to this discussion over couplers. But
then I'm convicted by Ed L's statements about "rubber gaugers" and
there's things I can do in S that I just can't do in N (which is why I
switched in the first place). Plus, I just got my hands on an SHS
SW-1 and the sheer detail and mass have truly impressed me. I can't
wait to see her run!
Best Regards,
Rhett Graves
(who's trying hard to remember that this is supposed to be FUN!!)
