Hi Bill, The point was that Modelrailroader is a scale magazine,
not a toy train magazine. Showing off a car with ugly couplers will
only turn off the readers and possible S scale converts. I know
because I was once in that camp and recall laughing at the silly crab
claws the first time I saw a photo of an S car with them installed. It
took me a long time to finally take a good look at S scale and realize
it's size perfection and suitability for scale modeling.
The possibility of getting a significant number of new Flyer fans is
very remote, it is a product stuck in it's time period, you had to be
there to understand it so new hobbyists are not gonna pile on that boat.
There is however a steady stream of youngsters who will probably
choose HO or N scales because they see the product advertised as scale
models. There is also a large group of aging modelers who would enjoy
switching to S scale if only the product was easier to obtain and the
selection more in line with their present scales. Any sign( such as
scale couplers in the ads) that the manufacturers are interested in
their business will go a long ways toward moving them our way, talk
about "getting over it" will just alienate them for good reason.
I haven't painted any cars this past week but I did frame in 5
skylights and installed new fascia and trim in preparation for
shingling my roof next week.............dave
