Bob:

One reality about modeling in S scale is that everything takes more time than
in the more popular scales. In HO, you have structure kits that are easy to
build, as well as completed structures that you can purchase. In S scale, most
of the structures that are available are craftsman kits which take time and
care to construct. The locomotives in HO come DCC and sound equipped (OK, I
know here I am preaching to the wrong choir)with full detailing, whereas an
American Models locomotive is only a starting point. Etc., etc., etc.

The result is that, although you CAN build a complete model railroad in S scale
today, each step in the process will take more time. The cumulative effect of
this is to stop many S scalers from building a layout in the first place.

Your point about layout size is a great one. One of the ways to bring the
time/cost issues down to a manageable size is to go small in layout size. Ed L
went another way, and found a group of modelers who were willing and able to
help him construct his large layout. If on the other hand you want to do most
of the layout building on your own, going with a shelf layout or modular layout
is a great way to make the process manageable, and to see progress quickly.

The progress on my 12x45 foot B&O layout has stalled, and one of the things
holding progress back is the daunting list of projects that will have to be
accomplished to bring the layout to a state of near completion. This year, I
am thinking of concentrating on one small section of the layout and working
only on that section. In effect, I will be creating a virtual shelf or modular
layout, and focusing my efforts on this smaller project.

For those that have not started a layout at all, think about throwing up a
simple shelf along one wall, and getting the S scale trains running in your
home this year!
