By the way, there was an outstanding series of articles by Don Spiro that
appeared in Railroad Model Craftsman starting in September 2005, that discussed
this process of "going small" in great detail. These articles cover the
philosophy of the change, and the actual construction techniques that Don Spiro
used to get a shelf railroad up and running in record time.
If you have back issues of RMC, you may want to review these articles. The
series was entitled "A New Layout" and the first three parts were in
consecutive issues Sept, Oct and Nov 2005.
