Michael, Here in Houston we are in the same boat when it comes to
'having friends over' to join with our setup. We do vary our setup
somewhat with more changes to come, but often money, transport, time
constraints and available labor are the deciding factor. Our next setup
will be a one day show with a fairly limited setup and strike time, plus
the available space limited. It's a lot of work to set up a large
modular layout, operate for six hours and rush to tear it down.
A couple of us have thought of adding a time saver addition to our
modular setup. This might be an ideal situation where the public is
invited to put together a small train, our mainline train picks up the
cars and drops off a few. We're always pleased when things run as
expected at the initial setup, but after a couple of hours it get fairly
boring. As a visual guy I've always noticed the groups of club members
sitting around a table in the middle of the layout doing everything
except really enjoying the layout and operation. So I keep looking for
things to operate, hopefully without disrupting a somewhat continuous
operation for the public.
