Technically speaking, it was the BOSTON & ALBANY that used the F-units on 
passenger trains to hoist them up and over the Berkshire Mountains in 
Massachusetts.  Thus the passenger gray (not black) paint scheme even though 
the lettering and lightning stripes were pure NEW YORK CENTRAL.  Since the B&A 
was owned/controlled by the NYC, the confusion is understandable.  The "New 
England States", as we all know, was a train of brand new Budd streamliners (in 
1948) that ran from Boston to Chicago so passengers would not be required to 
change trains at Albany, NY as previously required.  Ed L.
