While it is undeniable that the 2 A-B-A F3 pairs were purchased to move the New
England States; as with most things on the railroad, the reality of operations
soon breaks down all the boss' plans! Photos exist of #'s 3503 and 3502
pulling either a passenger or M&E consist into South Bend, Indiana in 1960 -
still in two-tone gray.
There are similar stories on the SP in the 80's when dirty, beat up SD9's kept
appearing on the point of crack freight trains, ahead of the shiny brand new
diesels of the day. The boss' were quite displeased. Turns out the engineers
were having the consists switched around to get the old SD's on the point -
they just rode one heck of a lot better than the new GE and EMD creations...
Of course the SD7 & 9's nickname on the SP was "Cadillac's"...! Practicality
always seems to bubble to the surface!
BTW, the NYC passenger F3's were delivered with no dynamic brakes, the area was
used instead for overhead boiler water tanks. Also, for some reason, #3502 was
never converted to freight. It was traded back to EMD in 1961 with its steam
boiler intact.
Just a bunch of otherwise useless information...
