Had a great Saturday FNF(!) at DPV. I installed a DCC/ Sound decoder (Tsunami) in an E6a. The locomotive is painted and lettered for CRI&P in the original 1941 "as delivered" scheme. It is the lead unit in the "Choctaw Rocket" passenger train I'm building: E6a; rebuilt heavyweight RPO and three cars. Additionally, I tackled the lighting; installing a twin seal beam highlight and a Gyralight. It all came out pretty well although my first idea of using modeling clay to hold the lights in place was a bust the heat of the lamps melts the clay...
I am searching for ways to improve bulb life, i.e. longevity. Replacing these bulbs is a time consuming pain. While I was working on the E6, we were running a set of Baldwin Sharks on a long freight. I looked up after a couple hours of operation and one of the twin headlights was out grumph! Another job that I won't relish.... At Sam McCoy's recommendation, I added 22 ohm resistors on the E6 lighting circuits to hopefully improve the life, but I'm always interested in other ideas. And before everyone starts up on LED's, they are a non-starter for me. I have yet to see one that I believe emits a natural looking headlight hue. Anyway, the E6 was a great success; runs and sounds great and watching that Gyralight come at you on a long tangent reminds me of several RI videos! I have three of the four cars completed so maybe this will light the fire to get the sleeper "Seminole" done!
