Jim...You might find a small voltage regulator a better method for keeping 
bulbs exposed only to a constant pre-set voltage (regardless of track voltage) 
and safely protected from voltage spikes which do occur with both DC and DCC.  
Voltage spikes do shorten the life of bulbs significantly.  Resistors are not 
really doing either of the above functions and only add some resistance to the 
circuit.  More protection than what a resistor can provide is needed.

Jim....Perhaps you have not looked around recently at the various LEDs.  The 
colors now available match a bulb very well.  The color matching progress in 
recent years has been substantial.  Several vendors offer very nice LEDs which 
is really the only way to go these days.
