Jim, et al:

Ed is right, there are several vendors that offer a wide variety of LED
bulbs that closely match incandescent bulbs. But I personally like to use
transparent water based markers that I get at craft stores to cover the
clear LED¹s whatever shade I am trying for.

LED¹s IMHO, are the only choice for virtually all model railroad
applications. Main downside: They are kinda pricey, but then again they last
forever, or at least will outlast me :)

Cheers :)

Roy

Jim...You might find a small voltage regulator a better method for keeping
bulbs exposed only to a constant pre-set voltage (regardless of track
voltage) and safely protected from voltage spikes which do occur with both
DC and DCC. Voltage spikes do shorten the life of bulbs significantly.
Resistors are not really doing either of the above functions and only add
some resistance to the circuit. More protection than what a resistor can
provide is needed.

yet to see one that I believe emits a natural looking headlight hue.

Jim....Perhaps you have not looked around recently at the various LEDs. The
colors now available match a bulb very well. The color matching progress in
recent years has been substantial. Several vendors offer very nice LEDs
which is really the only way to go these days.

Good luck....Ed L.
