I do use that technique on new installations.  If you don't loose the 
LED in the process, it makes for a nice bright headlight.  I think plain 
old clear plastic rod would work fine also--just contour and polish the 
end. Additionally you can use Plexiglass rod that is also contoured.  
Fire the end with a torch and it will make a near perfectly clear lens 
surface.
