I tried LEDs a while back and found a cream one that worked fine as an 
AmericanFlyer headlight.  Other "whites" did not look right.  I found them on 
the e place - one fellow was selling the diode and the appropriate resistor, 10 
to a package for a few dollars. I also found screw in bulb replacemsnts from 
HOng Kong (dirt cheap on the e place, but they were too long to work in the 
steamers, and did not work well in passenger cars as the light did not diffuse, 
but was directed strait.
