[clementine-player] Re: Copying music to phone fails with unhelpful error message

2023-11-26 Thread Garthhh
Clementine is good for making up a playlist, not as good at connecting to
devices
Try copying the files to any external media, micro sd, flash drive...
Once you have the files on your computer, you have more options to
transfer the files to your phone.
Possibly the phone has a card slot or will recognize external media
directly?
You may use your file browser or other tools to transfer...

Re: [clementine-player] Re: Invisible partition when adding a folder / Partition invisible à l'ajout d'un dossier

2023-10-08 Thread Garthhh
Dolphin for mounting
Opening Clem when the partition with the music library is not mounted, is a
problem
I have my library on home & add files with dolphin instead of Clementine
I set Clem to "Monitor for Changes", adding files updates as I watch
I use a different player like Audacious to check meta data, before moving
files to the Library

[clementine-player] Re: Newbie: How to make playlist show in playlist tab?

2023-03-04 Thread Garthhh

Any playlist you created by right clicking the top playlist tab, can be
accessed by right click load playlist, no connection to the left playlist
tab
Works fine
Never had much success getting these lists to work outside a specific
install of Clem

Left playlist tab, I have no idea how anything gets there or what I can do
with anything there. I recognize whats there as being smart playlist from
in the past

Library>smart playlist is used by giving whatever playlist you are working
on a unique identifiers to filter by
I use a combination of comment, grouping & genre
Criteria like duplicate, alternate version, live, long...
This way it's on the meta data & follows the files, not the player

2023-02-09 Thread Garthhh
Have you set Clem to settings>music Library> monitor library for changes?
Try using a different meta data editor, I remember using id3renamer, but
it's been some years
Uninstalling may not delete the configuration file, on windows, deleting
is like a new install
I don't know where the clem configuration file is on a windows machine

2023-01-27 Thread Garthhh
Tools>Preferences>Music Library>Monitor library for changes
The changes will be reflected as you make them

I also check Update the Library When Clementine Starts
Takes a few seconds to scan through 50'000 files on my main HDD
Make sure wherever your files are stored is mounted, before opening

[clementine-player] Re: iPod/Rockbox detection

2022-10-26 Thread Garthhh
Copy the files from clementine to a flash drive
Once the files are outside of clementine, you can transfer them with a file
browser to your ipod as you need

I copy to a sd & use find on dolphin to remove the songs from nested
folders artist>album>song so I can use them on cheap mp3 players which
can't use files from more than one folder

[clementine-player] Re: Library only holds around 40% of entire MP3 collection

2022-06-29 Thread Garthhh
High light all the songs of an album, right click>edit track
information>edit tags
You will be able to see what kind of metadata is missing
The Music brainz complete tag automatically utility may solve some of the
issues
What operating system are you using?

[clementine-player] Re: (artist,album) <= (top-folder/2nd-folder) not working

2022-06-29 Thread Garthhh
If you used itunes to do metadata editing, the files don't get modified,
there's a change file generated which is part of Itunes...
Open a few of the files at the same time on the clementine edit track
information right click, the musicbrainz utility may clean up some of the
issues
Also compare the actual file names

[clementine-player] Re: QNAP version unable to play M4A and WMA

2022-06-29 Thread Garthhh
Qnap is some ubuntu linux station 2.0 thing which brags about their
"Linux Station, users can directly utilize various feature-rich
Linux® apps, enjoying a private cloud that combines storage and IoT
applications."
It's built on a older kernal lts 4.12
Someone at QNAP/ubun linux station made Clementine the default player
Maybe this
https://forum.qnap.com/

Open the command line on linux station and type in clementine, which will
start clem on the terminal for more detailed info about whatever the
failure is

[clementine-player] Re: FAQ, newbie stuff, play an album.

2022-06-28 Thread Garthhh
That seems like a normal way to select & play an album
Just doing an internet search will get you better results than the small
amount of official documentation available, there is a wiki on github
You can enable file names as one of the playlist headers, I let clementine
"Monitor the library for changes" changes are reflected immediately
No idea about mac stuff, I'm on linux...

For me smart playlists are the reason to use clementine
I use the comment & group fields which are part of the file meta data,
ratings & playcounts are not

[clementine-player] Re: Guide For The Perplexed

2022-06-26 Thread Garthhh
How did you generate the meta data for the files?
Clementine expects
Artist>album>file
Artist>song, works
I would make the song name the album name

Minor differences, mis-spellings, order of the filename, will show up

I generally process files I've captured with Audacity with a metadata editor
The clementine version is ok, try highlighting all the songs of an artist,
which makes it easier to compare/share the information between the files
using the editor
I prefer easytag, which is better at changing the file name & filling in
the metadata

Album Artist, or the way the file name is written are the cause in most

[clementine-player] Re: Is There a Library Size Limit?

2022-04-28 Thread Garthhh
I don't know if the is a limit
You should go to the github clementine page where developers work

On a linux installation I would start Clementine from the command line by
typing clementine>enter
The gui still works, but you can see the underlying stuff in real time line
by line, usually provides a hint of what process is getting stuck
I don't know how to do that on windows

[clementine-player] Re: Wishlist for classical music

2022-04-08 Thread Garthhh
I don't hold genre to be sacred & feel free assign custom genres with wild
abandon
Use the group or comment field for each of the criteria you find important
There are a bunch of logic tools/choices you can use to build smart
playlists

Customizing the metadata that follows the files, will work on any player
It makes your collection more versatile

I'm not clear on how you want to listen to music or if you want it to
display in a specific way?

I build a playlist of songs under 7 minutes, excluding a few genres: books,
spoken word, jazz... 35000 gets reduced to 18000, randomize that playlist a
couple of times, copy a 1-2000 songs onto to flashdrive or music player,
delete those off the playlist, repeat
I spent a bunch of time chopping long cuts into 5 minute chunks, split at
the quiet moments

I have mine, hers & ours favorites lists marked in the comment field
There are a bunch of options for how the library displays & even more for
playlists

Clementine is mature, it does what it's going to do
The devs work on github doing bugs & such

[clementine-player] Re: Grouping by other tag fields such as Publisher (Record Label), Comment or VBR/CBR status

2022-03-23 Thread Garthhh
Try using smart playlists, which will do some of what you want directly, it
will do large complex queries, limited by only your imagination
Like Itunes Clem has a group field, I also use the comment field as a user
defined field
Editing large numbers of tags can cause things to lock up for some time
while it processes, I find an outside tag editor to be helpful, I'm sure
EasyTAG is in the ubun repository

[clementine-player] Re: Automatic playlist use more id3 tags

2022-03-05 Thread Garthhh
Grouping & bpm are already available using smart playlists, right click on
any smart playlist to start a new one
You can change the way the library sorts, by clicking the wrench next to
the search box
Click on any playlist header to sort by that criteria, click again for
inverse order
Right click any playlist header to change which are displayed, drag n drop
to change the order
You can add a keyboard shortcuts to change the shuffle mode & a bunch of
other things
I don't know about play counts or ratings. They are player files & in
their own database, having no universal format may not be cross compatible
I stick with fields that are metadata, comments & grouping, which follow
the files, not the player

Clementine is developed on git hub, feature requests & bug reports are
handled there

2022-01-24 Thread Garthhh
Go to the library pane, drag some artist, albums, songs on to a playlist
Open one of the premade smart playlists, or build a new one
Open the smart playlist of all songs, click the headers of the playlist &
sort different ways

Welcome :D

[clementine-player] Re: Recursive playlists

2022-01-24 Thread Garthhh
Probably no need to write new code, the tools are there
You will be able to do this with smart playlists, if you can design the
filters/queries,
There is a group field, you can define as playlist name, which will save as
meta data
Depending how sacrosanct you hold the comment field, it can also be a user
defined identifier
I define live music as genre live rock, live classical... which is handy to
exclude/include

[clementine-player] Re: Library only holds around 40% of entire MP3 collection

2022-01-23 Thread Garthhh
Most likely the files are there, but are hiding in the library
Clementine expects Artist>album>file to be the structure of your library
Click on the wrench next to the search box & change the way the library
displays
Check the various artists folder, anything with confused meta data can end
up there
Click the files tab on the left & see if the missing files are in the
library
Confirm your music library folder is set correctly

[clementine-player] Re: Right click / Show in file explorer

2022-01-14 Thread Garthhh
I have normal behavior on manjaro kde dolphin 1.4rc2, I have picked Dolphin
as my default file browser
Right clicking on a smart playlist doesn't offer me a show in file browser
option, if I select a bunch of songs on a playlist & choose open in
browser, I get a separate instance of Dolphin [file browser] for every
artist, normal behavior
Can you right click to file browser from the library or files tab on the
left?
Which desktop environment? file browser?

Re: [clementine-player] Digest for clementine-player@googlegroups.com - 2 updates in 1 topic

2022-01-09 Thread Garthhh
Clementine has some powerful tools, many of which I don't quite understand
Clementine always had a right click Delete option, which now reads Delete
>From Disk, I blew up a few files accidentally learning the clementine
definition of delete

I've never used the right click organize files choice
I guess that it organizes whatever files on the playlist you have
highlighted
The Organize Files when copying to device, allows you to reorder the file
names of the files on the external media or player to suit the specific
requirements

Clementine expects your music library to be organized
Artist[folder]>Album[folder]>Song[file]
I generally just create a folder [album] & give it a name for random files
Best of collections with various artists, I just put the songs with their
artist or make the artist whoever the collection is a tribute to
Another method is to give the collection a custom Genre, Group or Comment
tag
I use duplicate, alternate version & live as genre to filter for playlist
building

The devs are not on this forum
You can find them on Github

Re: [clementine-player] Digest for clementine-player@googlegroups.com - 2 updates in 1 topic

2022-01-07 Thread Garthhh
I can't compare to media monkey as I haven't had a windows machine in a
decade or so
Rhythm box is itune like built for gnome

Clementine is a music files database manager, with many tools specific to
music files
Designed to do queries of large databases of music files

Build a smart playlist [query], which allows you to set as many different
parameters for the sort as you want, the output will be a playlist
There are 26 parameters you can include or exclude in as many combinations
as you can imagine
If you need additional fields for custom parameters, grouping & comment are
available
You can also right click or drag songs, albums or entire genres onto any
playlist, the playlists will tab
You can have one playlist playing, while you work on a different ones
You can save the playlist as a 3mu, or copy the files to an external flash
drive
There is no way to save the files that make up a playlist to a different
directory on the same hdd
You can also change the way the library displays [sorts], click the wrench
to the right of the search box

2022-01-06 Thread Garthhh
As long as you add the new directory to Tool>preferences>music
library+folder

What kind of sorting is slow?
If the library has to run through a usb or network the initial or start up
scan will be slower
Less capable hardware will lock up for extended periods
If the usb/network are not connected before clementine is opened, also
slows things down

Look at the file names on a regular file browser [nautilus]
There are just some things the built in tag editor on clementine has

I use Easytag, does all the fields, clementine misses a few, including
changing the file names
You will find it in the ubun repository
I'm sure other tag editors will also work

2021-12-25 Thread Garthhh
What operating system? BCUninstaller suggests some version of windows
Her's some suggestions
When new files don't appear in your library, check the various artists, if
the Meta data is not quite right various artists is where they end up
Change the far left tab from library to files & see if you can navigate to
the files
Sounds like you may have changed the path to your Music Folder,
uninstalling-reinstalling
Try Tools>Music Library> Remove folder & re enter the location of your
Music Folder

No idea how key binding works on windows, could be the play/pause is all
ready spoken for by a different program
I'm on a laptop & use the touch pad
I use alt+x for next track
meta+z for play/pause
I can do them by touch

You can sort the playlist any way you want, click on the genre tab at the
top
Right click on any of the tabs to enable what ever tabs you would like to
see at the top of the playlist
Click on the wrench next to the search box to change how the library
displays, if you would like to sort the entire library by genre

2021-11-16 Thread Garthhh
I don't think it's a Clementine problem
What file browser?
What operating system?
What desktop environment?

Clementine adds a duplicate on whatever playlist I have open if I double
click on a song in my file browser [KDE/Dolphin] :D

Access your music library through Clem, using the library or files tab for
best results

I have a keyboard shortcuts for play/pause & next song using keys close to
the touchpad on my laptop

I can hover over my system tray for information or turn on "pretty osd"
Tools>Preferences>Notifications
The Clem popup is easy to position in an out of the way place

[clementine-player] Re: Suggestions

2021-08-10 Thread Garthhh
I use the comment field to set custom tags, sometimes the grouping field

I'm not clear what you mean by
"I cannot open my folders from the list on the left"
Library tab or files tab?
Clementine expects your library to be organized
Folders for each artist, containing folders/albums, containing songs
Click on the wrench right of the search box for other ways for the library
to display/sort including file type
I never add any files through clementine, I just put them where they belong
with a file browser, I'm set to "monitor library for changes", the new
files appear immediately

There are some things the clem metadata editor isn't able to do as well as
I modify metadata with an outside utility [eztag] to get the filenames in
the right order, numbering inconsistencies repaired, I sometimes have to
restart Clem [library scan] for the changes to take effect effect
I use an outside utility for replay gain

No idea what utilities to suggest for a windows pc

I can no longer copy to device directly, my device is a new usb flash
drives which aren't detected at all
I added the usb as a library source, which makes the library think there
are duplicates of the files I copyed, which I can remove from
playlist>Remove unavailable track from playlist
No idea how to fix my library? The actual files do not contain duplicates,
rescanning has no effect

I got some files on a usb, but was forced to organize [default deletes
original files], which leaves all the files nested inside folders, which
make them unusable to for the mp3 players I use them on

[clementine-player] Re: Question about smart playlist dynamic mode

2021-01-28 Thread Garthhh
You can limit the number of songs visible on the playlist with the dynamic
mode
When it comes to the random part, it's not as random as I would like, I
don't like duplicates which seems to happen enough for me to notice...
I build a playlist, shuffle that a couple of time & play in order, no
duplicates :D
I've added tags for duplicate, live, alt version, best, using the genre or
comment fields,
I have a smart list that filters out: longer than 7minutes, live,
duplicate, books, spoken word...

[clementine-player] Re: Permissions Ubuntu sdCard

2021-01-12 Thread Garthhh
Your file manager see's the sd as an external device, but clementine
doesn't?

My experience using Clementine is that anything you plug in & is recognized
by a file browser, will be on clementine as a device

When all else fails reformat

2021-01-09 Thread Garthhh
Try a smaller number of files,
Used to be if you did a very large operations, clem would freeze, sometimes
the entire computer, worse on machines without lots of ram & cores
The new behavior is crash, I opened 2 playlists of 15k files accidentally,
as I wasn't sure if it worked & clicked again, crash
I moved to outside metadata editing tools after having files with hincky
metadata clementine couldn't change enough to fix file names or other stuff
EasyTag on linux,
I never tried the organize function on clem,

[clementine-player] Re: Rndom play - not so much-

2020-12-09 Thread Garthhh
I also find that to be true, the random isn't the right kind of random
The solution is to shuffle the playlist & play sequentially
I sometimes shuffle playlists of a few 1000 songs, many times the 1st
shuffle leaves songs from the same artist in pairs
This method does eliminate having the same song come up multiple times

[clementine-player] Re: Ripped songs from cd no tag info

2020-11-27 Thread Garthhh
The files are in the location the rest of the library is?

Meta data [MD] is tricky stuff Clementine has some trouble if the MD isn't
just so
The exact file name & the order the parameters listed, has tripped me up
more than once
Processing the files with a better tag editor can help
I like EasyTAG which should be in the Lubun repository
ET does stuff the built in clem tag editor doesn't, like re writing the
file names

Have you tried transcoding into other formats?
Other transcode tools might be better than the clem version, which is
probably pretty basic, I have soundKonverter, again probably in the
repository

Tools>Preferences>Music Library>Add Folder
You can then just add music to that folder directly Clementine will find it
If you are using a set of files on outside storage, it must be connected

[clementine-player] Re: Three questions about Clementine

2020-05-16 Thread Garthhh
Which clementine version are you using?
1 & 2 are likely apple specific, I can't be any help

I understand what you mean by item number, which I see on my cheap car
stereos playing flash drives burned on Clementine
I too would appreciate being able to display & manipulate that information
as a column
This sort of feature request would have a better chance of success on git
hub where the Clementine developers are

Re: [clementine-player] Adding New Music to Clementine

2020-05-09 Thread Garthhh
Invoking a rescan has always been painfully slow,
It's quicker to close & reopen the entire program
If I manually move or modify files with an outside program like a file
browser or tag editor, I sometimes see the changes go into effect when I
click back over to clementine, the library pane will revert to the last
state
The meta data being slightly different across an album, can make you play
where did my file go :O
If the file name doesn't match the meta data or a myriad of other things
My library is sorted artist>year>album, so if one song has a different
year, it appears as 2 albums

I import files outside my library & use exaile & eztag to check the
integrity, before putting the files into my library manually
Exaile doesn't have the same playlist
capabilities, but isn't as finicky as to library path, easily jumping from
folder to folder

Clementine does a bunch of fun stuff in terms of smart playlist filters
using the group or comment tag [meta data], that I haven't found in other
players, the price is fussing around with a tagger, the clementine tagger
will do most, but stuff involving the filename & some of the other bits not
so much

If you put new music in whatever location you have told clementine your
library is
Clementine will integrate any additions into the library automatically, no
need to manually add the files
You can determine when that happens

[clementine-player] Re: Exporting all the playlists togheter,

2019-12-10 Thread Garthhh
More information about how you use your playlists & which operating system
could be helpful to help you find a solution

Use smart playlists instead of simple ones
Use the comment or group as the filter criteria
For example
change the grouping on every file on a playlist to whatever you use for a
play list name
or
You could save the files to any removable storage, instead of as playlists
This won't work on the same storage device as your library, unless it is on
a different partition [linux speak]
Manipulate the files with clementine in the folders as if they were a Ipod
or phone adding/subtracting files

[clementine-player] Re: Neophyte coming in for a landing

2019-09-25 Thread Garthhh
It would be helpful if you told us what operating system you are using
There is no manual, most times if you do a general internet search for a
question about Clementine will provide answers, looking through the threads
here will have some hints
Keep a copy of your files some where safe, try stuff
Tools>Cover Manager>Right click on any item>search for album covers, is an
easy way to start, you can always cancel, if there are no results keep
removing information & search again

The library is a folder containing all the folders for each artist
containing folders for each album that contains the individual files, that
is the structure Clementine expects to find
you can do it other ways, but may not be able to use all the features

I have 1000's of files I generated from lp's, getting the tags in a useful
form can require inputting every parameter individually or looking up the
discography of the band on wikipedia
Right click any file in your library or playlist>Edit track
information>complete tags automatically will work part of the time, the
clementine tag editor is very powerful, but can take some time if the
number of tag being changed
I also use Easy Tag to write tags in my library
The information doesn't have to be correct, it just need to exist & be
consistent enough to meet your needs
I'd say Artist, Album, Track number, track name [which can be the same as
track number] would be the minimum, the album could contain all of the
artists songs & be called anything, I would avoid having every album have
the same name as it's confusing...
Being able to sort [playlist] & filter [Smart Playlists] allows you to
generate playlists without explicitly picking every song one at a time

necessary integrate with the newer version of QT
Should there be any developmen going on it is being worked on over at

[clementine-player] Re: What exactly does Clementine sync to a connected iPod?

2019-07-26 Thread Garthhh
When you open the devices tab on clementine, can you see the songs on the
ipod?
Drag n drop may work
I haven't used clementine with an ipod for nearly 10 years, so your mileage
may definitely vary
I started using cheap mp3 players, when the price of a cf card to replace
the hdd for an ipod, exceeded an entire player

If you delete files off a playlist or off a connected device, the files in
your library remain
To delete from library, right click on a song & click delete from disk,
there will be an "are you sure?" kind of nag box
This is good since "delete from disk" is right below the "copy to device"
right click selection

You can fix up the tags a bit
the album artist tag can do that kind of thing
right click on an album>edit track information for the clementine tag editor
Change the name of the album so greatest hits aren't the 1st words
The specific file name can be a problem, which you can see with easytag or
some other tag editor

[clementine-player] Re: Clementine 1.3.1 on LInux repeat tracks randomly (probably)

2018-12-22 Thread Garthhh
Are you playing from a dynamic or a static playlist?
Take any playlist & shuffle playlist
Shuffle the playlist several times & scan the list to see...
set to don't shuffle
Play
you will have a much better idea of how many files have been played, there
won't be any repeats or skips unless they are contained within the playlist

[clementine-player] Re: Not all songs from my "library" is in Clementine library

2018-12-12 Thread Garthhh
You will probably find the "missing" files in unknown artist or various
artist, the metadata for the files is not quite right...
Open the playlist all songs & sort by different parameters for clues
Try checking with a tag editor I use Easy Tag
Things like the file name not lining up with the ID3 tags is one of the
causes

[clementine-player] Re: playlists vs play queue and static playlists

2018-08-09 Thread Garthhh
What do you mean by
"I go to my library and play songs from a folder"
Playing through the clem interface or by right clicking from a file browser?

Go to: Tools>Preferences>Behaviour
this will answer some of your questions

Many Playlists
One Queue

The Queue is whatever playlist contains the song presently playing or paused
all the playlists open on the clementine can be modified, you can save any
version of a playlist you wish, to be opened as you need

if you copy the xspf file that will be whats on your phone, an xspf file
to get the actual songs open the playlist on Clementine > select all >
right click > copy to device
there will be options to set the file structure however you would like it
to be & which device you would like to "copy to"

2018-04-16 Thread Garthhh
if you plug your android into your computer & are able to navigate with a
file browser to where the music is stored
Clementine will be able to manage those files through the devices tab on
the left side

as a work around you can copy music to a tf card & install in your android
device
