When the stupid rule is corrected, the stupid countries should not remain on the list. To me, it doesn't matter if a country is removed or deleted. Thanks for your ideas, too.. 73 Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- I use nested envelopes for QSL requests, plain white for state-side and international air mail for overseas. I always fill out the return envelope with the recipients full address in the upper left-hand corner and my address in large print in the middle. For overseas, always remember to include USA below your address on the return envelope. For state-side I affix a first class stamp, and for overseas the correct denomination of stamps (air-mail) for the particular country involved. This is on my return envelope. For envelopes sent to mgrs of DX stations in a contest, I always send $2.00 in greenbacks with a sticky pad attached saying "to help with QSL card costs". For envelopes sent to DX stations, in addition to my pre-addressed and pre-stamped return envelope, I either enclose 2 IRC's with note "for your QSL needs", or $ 2.00 in greenbacks and a note "to help with your QSL costs". I avoid sending cash to those countries that have strict mail customs rules, or where mail theft is a problem. 425 DX News, QRZ DX, The Daily/Weekly DX, etc is a source of this info. Since getting back on the air in 1994, my QSL return rate has been 100 % using this method. There have been times that I have had to send another such QSL request and a note saying I sent you you a card on such a date and did you get it. An example of this was an XV5 and a TU2. The replies in all these instances was "Sorry, I didn't get your card". International mail does get lost or stolen. A C9 or TR8 with a good signal to the west coast can work a slew of W5, W6, and W7 stns. Most likely, he needs none of these cards, but he will sure get a lot of requests for his card. Remember, he has to pay for the cost of these cards, take the time to answer the cards, and exchange the IRC's for stamps. I always try to make it very easy for the DX stn to answer my QSL requests, and that is why I use pre-addressed and pre-stamped return envelopes. Good luck to alllets just give them the benefit of the doubt. 73 Tony, W4FOA -- Tony, KH8SI was S3 this AM (31JUL06 > 0400 UTC ) with QSB. His sig started steadily increasing on my HB Vert until around 0600 UTC when the OP stated QRT USA then went QRT. During this period the Op continually did the following scenario: K8 ?? 599 BK TU UP K4S ?? BK TU The Op didn't get the entire call yet gave a 599 and the Op came back NOT with call of the stn wkd but only a TU. So who did he work ?? I got perfect timing from two replies of KH8SI with: K4 ?? 559 BK and, K4S ?? 599 BK but all the Op sent back was 559 TU, and 599 TU. That is not a confirmed QSO with me. Did he work me ?? Don't really know so cannot log it !! 0200 - 0530 UTC: WOW what a difference !!! QRG: ~ 7.021 MHz Good CONDX and skip long. Some stns calling on his QRG, but not as many as before. The key-down intentional QRM on QRG was only present after ~ 0400 UTC and was of short duration just a few times. Signal peaked to 599 here at 0205 UTC and stayed S9 for ~ 30 Mins. About - S2 of slow QSB. 3Y0X was monitoring his QRG and sending at ~ 28 WPM. Quite a few times he sent AS AS QRM QRM HI, went QRT for a few Mins then sent CQ CQ DE 3Y0X UP. Great !!! The QSO rate was much better than on eve of 14 Feb UTC. 3Y0X Op had pretty good ears. For me he had to !! Worked at 0239 UTC after CLG for ~ 30 Mins. My QRG was in the clear (as far as I could hear) and 1.2 KHz above 3Y0X QRG. Many TKS to the BIG OP in SKY. Was running 90W to H.B. 1/4 wave vertical. 3Y0X was S8 HRE. Gave me a 559, well he was giving all 559 or 599 :-) I kept my QRG 800 HZ to 2.6 KHz just above his QRG which was on the lower end of the throng. The throng was following his last QSO freq which was ~ 1 Khz to 20 KHz above his QRG. I waited for 3Y0X to come to me on lower end of throng. My W6ELProp has been right on the money. I did, however, change my reference signal level to .10 uV versus the Default of .50 uV to account for the sensitivity of the RCVR in my IC-765. I did this by adding 10 db in the Additive Signal Constant section of the setup. I also added 6 db for bands they are using the StepIR's and 9 db for their linears. I also changed the W6ELProp setup for a Minimun Radiation Angle of 5 Deg being optomistic for my verticals rather than the Default setting of 1 Deg - jeez an ant must be up 5 wavelengths to achieve any significant radiation at this angle. Doing this gives me a wider band opening window. Info: QTH: Belmont, NC - 15 W. of Charlotte Rig: Icom IC-765 and H.B. 1/4 Wave Vert with 16 32 ft radials spaced 25 Deg apart and buried few inches in red clay soil. Condx: 0630 UTC - 0830 UTC, 3Y0X QRG 7.022 MHz CLG CQ, QSX UP. Pile-Up throng moving from about 900 Hz to 12 KHz up and back low. 0630 UTC: 3Y0X signal S3, about every 30 Secs a USA or EU called on his QRG. About 4 - 6 Cops sent UP or Lid. Every time 3Y0X called a USA STN, a S6 key-down CW SIG put on his QRG, 4 to 6 Cops sent LID, A--H--E, S--TH--D, or F.U., etc. Every time 3Y0X called a EU STN, the key-down SIG was not there. Dave, K4SV, 3Y0X OP, was HVG TRB WRKG anybody. FM 0630 to 0745 UTC, he sent QRT 2X, and QSY 80M 1X evidently to try and clear the PROB of HVG TRUB WRKG the pile-up as after about 15 - 20 MINS, he came back to ~ 7.022 MHz CLG CQ and UP. 0745 UTC: 3Y0X SIG had come up to S6 to S8 HRE, but the same QRM on his QRG persisted. The key - down QRM on his QRG had decreased FM S8 to S5 with same routine as above. 0800 UTC 3Y0X SIG steady S8 HRE. Dave sent QRX. He was QRX ABT 3 MINS. 0803 UTC New 3Y0X OP - Peter, HB9BXE, came on (???). Not sure as 20M short skip also good and USA SIGS strong. ATT, several USA STNS called 3Y0X on his QRG, and the Cops went wild. The key-down SIG on QRG persisted with same routine. New Op sending about 30 WPM and mostly WKG EU. EU SIGS VY strong in pile-up and the key-down QRM was stronger. 0815 UTC 3Y0X sent PSE PSE QRX QRX PSE only EU for 60 mins, PSE only EU Up. I gave up and went QRT. What an absolute MESS I got them on 20M CW on 10 FEB at 1248 UTC using 90W and my H.B. Vert, on very low end of throng, after CLG for 10 mins. Still STNS CLG on 3Y0X QRG, but only long skip, so QRM HRE not bad. Is 3Y0X monitoring his QRG ?? The CW bands have gone to Haiti, since the FCC restructured the requirements for a ticket in 2000. I personally feel the only way in to HF CW operating privledges is the old Novice class: only the old Novice bands; 100W max and VFO of course though. Let the new hams get some operating experiece before do act like Lids and QRM our CW bands. When I got my ticket in 1958, the only time I came across the word Lid was in the ARRL Operating Manual. Now it is status quo. What an absolute shame - the CONDX on the CW bands. I do not work SSB, so do not know about CONDX there - PROB the same. Wrkd K7C on 30M at 1011 UTC this morning. 559/559 with 90 W and Inv Vee up 25 ft. He was working some JA. Mid-West and East Coast, but pace very slow. He was QRV 5 KHz up from 10.106 MHz, his QRG. W6ELProp predicts a strong signal narrow window from 1230 - 1400 UTC to East Coast and Mid West on 30M with present WWV indicies. Also a strong window on 20M for 1730 - 0100 UTC for Mid-West and East Coast.Hope this helps !! There is currently some probem in the uploading of logs, but sooner or later it will all get down. Seems the guys are having too much fun operating and resting a bit to load logs. Usually a 24 - 30 Hr delay time and word is that will shrink to nothing shortly, when they start calling Eu..just kidding Rag OB !!! Larry, I can surely emphasize with you, as I never did get through to them on 40M Mon AM with my 90 W and Inv Vee up 25 ft even though I was camped out of their freq. Seemed like a few simplex QSO's escalated into a few thousand linears and yagis covering 8 KHz in a matter of seconds. I never have been one to give up easily so I was back it this morning, and I did get them on simplex using a few tricks in my bag. When these sort of DX surveys are taken, they are talking to the big guns on the Honor Roll and others looking to get on the Honor Roll. They do not address the thousands who are the casual DXers that have never even worked Kure Island before. I dare say some hams don't even know where Kure is at. ;-) So when you look at the US ham population and say, they do not need to give us as much time to the US, think about the number of little pistols they are leaving out here in the US. Those of us on the east coast that do not have big setups and high power. We are probably in as much of a disadvantage as some of our EU friends. There are a lot of us who have not had a shot and probably will not have a shot at Kure no matter what happens, because it just isn't in the cards. But from what I have seen and heard over the last four days it is sad so many will not break through any wall, US, JA or EU because so many are trying to fill out and complete their every mode and band sheet. There is nothing more disgusting to me than some big shot DXer bragging on the list or on the air that he worked them on every band and mode, while so many didn't even get sniff on one band or mode. >From their website: "We are still struggling with a huge amount of physical tasks--antenna commissioning, station protection, moving water and gasoline, working for the resident naturalist, etc. We are very tired, there is limited ability at this moment to respond to individual requests for bands, modes, skeds, etc. " Incredible. You elite want them to cater to your individual request to set up a sked or asking them to get on your band so you can fill out a hole? I'm glad some of you have worked them on bands and modes you haven't gotten them on before. And to those of you who worked Kure again on a band or mode you have worked them in the past, I have just one thing to say. Nothing more illustrates my point than this statement from their own website: "We expect to make more than 80,000 total radio contacts with 35,000 different persons during the expedition." You do the math, 45,000 contacts to get another band or mode for someone who has probably already worked the country. Their are a lot of us guys out here that would like to work them for the first time on any band or mode. I'm not interested in the DX Challenge, in fact, I could care less. Rag. These guys know what they are doing. They know that Kure is highly needed in Eu: #1 They have sarted off the right way by hacking down a lot of the USA and JA QRM which would be really loud when they do call Eu. They know about prop, and that only a few Eu stns were being heard and worked this AM ~ 0600 UTC. So with prop so bad to Eu, why not hack down a little more of the potential JA/USA QRM. #2 They have been controlling the pile-up very well so far, and I guarantee you when they do call Eu, they will be emphatic and put out the word "no JA or NA". Phooey!! Tom, I am also disabled. My SS disability check a monh is about 1/4 per month I made teaching college. All my newer rigs are sold. My newest one is a used IC-765. I don't have a tower or yagi, and have never had one in the 47 years I have been a ham and DX'er. I sure wish DX'ing was the way it was back in the 60's and 70's when the CW bands were loaded with "very rare" DX. The bureau system worked great, and you could bet that a nice looking QSL and 1 IRC would definitely bring you a direct card back. With more DX'ers on in the CW Extra bands, it is now much more difficult for me to compete with the guys running yagis and linears. I have always found a way to live with the changes that came along these past decades, and I surely did NOT LIKE the $0.05 Extra. My best advice, is take the lemon and try your best to make lemonade from it. If I were you, I would put a note in my direct QSL request and tell the DX that you are disabled and 1 IRC is all you can afford. It would at least tell him that all USA DX'ers are not well off finacially. You might be surprised to get his QSL and your IRC returned. This has happened to me a lot of times. Last night on 40M CW, an unidentified stn sent me a QLF. I replied QLF ?? He said, try sending with your left foot. I sent QRA ?? but got no reply. If you hear me on 20 or 40 CW please know I have been in the hosp 2X in last 5 wks and am recovering well from a mild stroke to the right side. My fist, however, is still quite skakey !! GM Ron, Yep emission codes not used much, if ever, by hams anymore. I had to know them all (the old ones) for my FCC 1st Class Radiotelephone ticket back in 60's. I worked part time as evening Engineer at our town AM station while going to High School. Some of the old ones were: A-1CW (carrier, on-off keying) A-3AM (broadcast) A-3J SSB (suppressed carrier) A-4FM (broadcast) Sitting here hoping T33C will drop down from SSB to CW on 20M. Would like to see a good 20M CW QSO in log, but it might wind up as four 40M CW QSO's. I not worried so much about on-line logs, as I still go by a good on the air CFM when I send in a QSL. I mention this not to be critical or nitpicky, but I noticed the T33C logs have an update time of UTC. Now we do have some new DX'ers who subscribe to [DX-Chat], and I am an ole bugger so maybe a change slipped by me but as far as I know in the 24 Hr clock system, there is no such time as UTC..well, if I had a QSO time of exactly midnight UTC, I sure would not put UTC in my log or on a QSL card !! Well, as far as I know now anyway !! Now, back in '02 when I was an old Navy communicator, the radio day started at 0001Z (Z = Zulu time back then, same as UTC - fancy bean counter name now), and the clock ticked 0100 UTC > 2300 UTC > 2359 UTC > 2400 UTC, then at the new radio day 0001 UTC. So, there was no such time as UTC. After all, it was the 24 Hr clock system. Is this still not true ?? Now I was QRT for a long time. Did something slip by me ??? Only needed this one on 40M. I have one good 40M QSO and one good 20M QSO on CW. The on-line log shows that I have three 40M CW QSO's :-) I talked to 40M CW Op this morning. They know they have a glitch somewhere in up-loading logs to web site: Wrong band in log Many RTTY QSO's missing Duplicate band QSO's They are still trying to find the problem. Also Bernard, DF3CB, trying to find glitch. The on-line logs only contain the call and band - no date/time info in on-line logs. If they are able to find problem, they will do a new, up to date, complete on-line log from Banaba. If not, they will re-do the on-line log when back home. In mean time, looks like some insurance QSO's for some guys. Odd, there is no problem with the on-line logs for multi-band and multi-mode QSO's for some folks. If your QSO does not show up after the on-line log update, exit the web site, bring it back up, and check on-line logs again. My 40M QSO did not show up after checking twice. I exited the web site, brought it back up, checked on-line logs, and it now shows up (). Must be a glitch somewhere. 40M was only band I needed them on (Whew !) Being an OT (O.F.), I am sometimes forgetful, so I have to very careful with the coax switches in the shack, and try hard to be mindful of what I am doing: Now about "Crusty Ole Extras"...you have probably heard the term "rightful indignation", and I am pretty sure this applies to some "Crusty Ole Extras". Now, I am lucky as CW came pretty easy for me so getting to 20 WPM was not difficult, however, for some others it was not, and they had to really, really work hard for that 20 WPM. Also some had to work very hard on the theory. Well, since I had a good background in electronics it came easy for me like CW. Will say, that when you are sitting in front of an FCC Examiner, 20 WPM sounds like 30 WPM. For those that had to work real hard for that 20 WPM to get their Extra, I can tell you that a lot of them suffered "righteous indignation" when the code requirement was lowered to 5 WPM. Being as it is now, I am sure we all 20 WPM Extras are striving very hard to accept the changes and hold no hard feelings toward the 5 WPM Extras. However, if you new Extras get a "bad turn" from a "Crusty Ole Extra" down in the Extra bands, I am sure it is nothing personal - that, however, does not make it right. Someone once said that a "good name" and "reputation" are worth more than all the gold and silver on earth. I believe that. It goes right along with a person who is mindful of his credit report and credit rating. Well, on the ham bands, your Call Sign is your name and your credit report all rolled into one. So, if you are mindful of the reputation carried by your call sign, you will going a long way to be helpful and courteous to all amateurs whether they are Novices, Techs, or 5 WPM Extras. Also, you will be mindful that your operating pratices and signal are in keeping with the highest standards of the art. Your Call Sign is your reputation. Now if T33C would just drop down from 20 M to 40M OK, off the ole soapbox for now. There would be no stas calling the DX on his QRG when he working split, no QRM to others, and no need for Traffic Cops who cause additional QRM with the "Ups". (3)With no QRM on the DX QRG, the "Real Crusty Extras" would not be sending "Lids" on the DX QRG, or laying down a carrier to express their disgust. (4)If there are no "Real Crusty Extras" sending "Lids" on the DX QRG, there would be no other "helpful souls" trying the stop the "Real Crusty Extras", and no dogfights on the DX QRG. (5)If you had a new rig and wanted a check of your audio on SSB, you could send a polite "Break Please" to two strong stations engaged in a QSO without a "Get F-d" in return. If your audio was bad, they would say "OM, your audio is very distorted" instead of "Throw it in the Sh-t Can". Even today, I'm on my "best behavior" down in the extra segment and try like crazy not to embarrass myself when chasing the odd DX or what-not down there. So I think it is perfectly fine to expect a reasonable level of competency when someone keys in that segment. I also think grossly incorrect QSL information is inexcusable and a 4 WPM character speed is undecipherable! True, there may be some handicap there, but general cluelessness is the more likely case. That said, I would not have known what "AS" means either -- it is a traffic prosign and I just don't hear it on the air in regular QSO. (On the plus side, I know it now!) The FCC only tests on DN, AR, SK and BT. I'm also not sure I would have understood T9 either (depends on context), though I may well have figured it out -- I would not expect _you_ to be telling _me_ about your own tone without more explanation than can reasonably be done at 4 WPM. de, thks, gn, ge, tu, cut numbers, Q-codes -- these your hear a lot and figure out quickly. (Well, cut numbers besides "T" threw me the first time I contested, but...) So yes, on these two more obscure behaviors and idioms I think a little "ole crusty Extra" is, in fact, showing. Well, boy the old [NJDXR] crowd has changed completely, or you guys have "mellowed" like me :-) :-) What I intend to do, and what I intended to do before making the post was: Send my nicest QSL card to him with the correct QSO info, enclose his QSL card that he sent me and point out the errors. Enclose an SASE for him to send a corrected card back. I just wanted to see how some of my counterparts would respond. I am overwhelmed Yep, he could be handicapped. Guess I was lucky. CW and all the Q Signals, abbreviations, etc. came easy for me. It does not for other people. 90 % of our job should be helping and encouraging other Hams, especially those dipping their feet in CW. He might become a real "machine gunner" one of these days. Many new Hams today did not have a real Elmer like many of us did. By the way - some of the greatest QSOs I have had were CQs sent from 8 - 12 WPM, and answered by myself. Many of the Ops were in their 80's and 90's, and many were ex-Navy Radioman and Army Signal Corps in WWII. I have a QSL card from a Marine Guadalcanal vet that has a picture of his company flag on his QSL. It has the words "Get Some". These QSOs were in the 40M Extra band. Last week I had a CW QSO with relatively new ham (3 Yrs on air) on 7012 KHz. I had to slow down Loigikey to 4 WPM for him to copy. He gave me a 597 report. Asked him to AS while I checked my CW tone. He did not know what that meant - so told him to STANBY. Switched on another RX - my TS-870 sig was T9. Told him my CW sig was T9 - he didn't know what T9 meant either. Gave that up and we went throught the rest of the pleasantries of a QSO: rig, WX, age, occupation, etc. Before finishing QSO, he asked me to slow down speed again (he did not use QRS). I set Logikeyer to 3 WPM and put extra long spaces between characters. Before signing, I recommended that he might spend some more time in the General portion of band. Told him a lot of new CW guys hung out around 7040 KHz, he could get improve his operating skills, his code speed, and probably avoid the risk of getting his feelings hurt by a "an ole crusty Extra" (I still am to some extent). I could tell he took a little offense to this statement. Friday, I got a QSL card from him: On the QSL my report was listed as 459, and the Freq was 7820 Mhz. So how would you respond to this QSL ??? (1) Throw it in the trashcan. (2) Return QSL and tell him you would be glad to QSL if he sent another QSL with the correct QSO info. (3) Send him a QSL for a QSO on 7820 MHz and put his RST as 123 on QSL. Just sorta curious what you would honestly do in this situation. C'mon now guys be honest !! Thanks to the help of Urb, W2DEC, and Doug, W4OX, the issue of the copied material from the MDXA web site has been resolved. A "sea lawyer" I may be be, but this copyright was all new to me !! Years ago when [DX-News] was [NJDXA] and rather informal like [DX-Chat] now is, I passed on many DX Tips to fellow DX'ers. Sure, I put my name to them, but I wasn't concerned that they were republished (and a few were I later found out), or I got credit for them. When I write a knowledge or technical based DX article which is published on my DX club's web site, however, things take on a different light. I am more intent on protecting the integrity of my DX club's web site than protecting, per say, what I have written. The article may legally belong to me, but when my DX club sees fit to publish on our web site anything that I have written, personally, I have "given" the article to them. Also, I would like to say "thanks" to the President of the other orgainization who was "very undertanding" and "very timely" in removing the copied material. When Hams help each other, and DX'ers help each other, putting pride and personal convictions aside, things almost always work out for the best. It is sad that I have to resort to this means of communications to document this incident, but I have no other alternative. First off.I am NOT a member of the Southern Illinois DX Association Several weeks ago I did a web search of my call. I was not surprised that the Magnolia DX Association and Carolina DX Association, which I am a member of, showed up. I was, however, surprised that the Southern Illinois DX Association came up. Further investigation of the SIDXA web site revealed that SIDXA had copied ver batim about 3 1/2 pages of DX related articles from the MDXA web site. Preceding these "copied articles" on the SIDXA web site was the statement "Here are some DX Tips that have been passed on by our members". I was the author of many of the DX Tips, and my name and call appeared under the copied articles on the SIDXA web site. MDXA was not mentioned as the originator of these copied articles. I realize that most of the information on the internet is not copyrighted, and therefore basically a "free for all", but this is an unethical practice in the unwritten code of DX'ing. If the President/Webmaster of SIDXA would have contacted the President/Webmaster of MDXA, they would have gladly been given permission to use these articles. They, however, did not. If they had have, MDXA should have been given credit as the originator. Atempts to contact the President of Southern Illinois DX Association by e-mail (it bounces) and telephone (directory service) have been fruitless. I have chosen not to mention names and calls (other than my own) in this post. My intention is not to point the finger at a certain individual, but to point out the shameful and unethical practice of this incident. This incident is akin to someone forging a QSL card for DXCC credit. DX'ers have always been a "special breed" of the amateur radio community. As such, they should exhibit the highest standards of honesty, morality, and proper conduct on and off the bands. [DX-CHAT] Ref: RFI Prevention Techniques (Little Correction)
Sorry folks, due to congestive heart failure, I am having a very slow recovery from a bad case of the flu, and a foggy head to boot: A .01 uF capacitor across the hot and neutral sides of your power strips for 2 wire AC distribition systems should be good for all RFI frequencies. Since Xc = 1/(6.28 x f x C) , as f increases, Xc will decrease. If Xc is 2.5 Ohms at 7 Mhz, it will be 1.25 Ohms at 14 Mhz, and .625 Ohms at 28 Mhz, etc. Judging by the mail I received on this post, I should have added this: For each AC receptacle on your your power strip, the short straight slit is "Hot", the long straight slit is "Neutral", and the round or sometimes half-round socket (forming the top of a triangle) is the "Ground" - this the socket that you connect the banana plug to on the wire going going to station ground. P.S. On all new quipment you buy, check to make sure that ground side of the AC plug is actually connected to chassis ground using a DVM. I bought an Astron 50A Power Supply few years back. A DVM check of the resistance from the ground side of the AC plug to chassis ground showed an open. Problem was a thick coat of paint preventing the lock washer on termianl lug connectrion from making good contact to the metal chassis. The wire to this terminal lug was connected to the ground side of the AC line in. A "floating" or ungrounded equipment chassis acts like an antenna to RF. [DX-CHAT] Some RFI Prevention Tips
Here are some simple RFI prevention techniques that I have learned here at home with the rigs and computer, so thought I would pass them along in hopes they might help someone. I live in an old house with a 2 wire AC distribution system (Hot and Neuteral). My 40M Inv Vee is only 10 ft away and broadside to the back of the house. My 40M CW was raspy, as RF was getting into the AC distribution system. I was using power strips with EMI and Surge Protection circuits, but they were effectively disabled. Here is why: The EMI circuit consisted of two small inductors, one in series with the hot and neuteral inside the power bar, and there were two .001 uF capacitors from the hot and the neuteral lines to ground inside the power bar, but No Ground. My station ground was a 10 ft copper clad ground rod just outside the window. I used some # 14 stranded wire and soldered banana plugs to the end. I used this to connect my station ground to the ground side of an unused receptacle on all my power bars. Now my 40M CW signal is clean as a whistle. I share a computer with the family which is in the den just across the hall from the shack. The computer and printer are plugged into a power bar also, but no ground. Everytime I keyed the rig on 40M, I rattled the printer. Running a ground wire to the power bar for the computer was out, so I did a little math. The Xc of a .01 uF capacitor at 7 MHz was 2.27 Ohms. At 60 Hz, the Xc of the capacitor is 265 KOhms. I connected the .01 uF capacitor (a 2 KV silver mica) across the hot and neuteral side of the power bar by soldering the leads to an old 2 prong AC plug and used shrink tubing for insulation. I plugged the .01 uF in the power bar, and now no more printer rattle on 40M. I had previosly tried several different torroids on the printer AC line, but no go. If you have a 2 wire AC distribution system in your home and are plagued with RFI to your computer or rigs, connect your station RF ground (ground rod system) to your power strips using a banana plug, plugged in to the ground connector of an unused receptacle. If this is not feasible (as in the case of my computer) a .01 uF capacitor across the hot and neuteral should be good for RFI at 30M and lower frequencies. For RFI at 20M and above, use a .001 uF capacitor to get the Xc down low. For 120Vrms, the peak voltage on the positive and negative alternation is 170 Volts, so use a capacitor with a voltage rating of at least about twice this (500 VDC should be good). The surge protection circuit in most power strips consists of two MOV's, one from the hot side to ground, and another from the neuteral side to ground. With no ground connection, however, they are doing no good. So, in my situation with the computer, I soldered the two leads of an MOV to a two prong AC plug, and plugged it in the power strip so that it is across the hot and neuteral. About 10 days ago I asked for an easy to set-up and use shareware/ freeware firewall. I received 15 mails in reply, and 13 recommended Zone Alarm. I downloaded the installation file for the free version of Zone Alarm. Last night I got up enough courage to install and set-up. Well, the program basically sets up most things itself during installation. Since I am running Norton SystemWorks, I read the help files about how to include other files/programs requiring internet access, so I manually added "Live Update" and "Symantec NetDetect". Still yet to see if a virus def "automatic live update" makes it through OK :-) :-) The Help Files are great and very easy to understand. I have been running a computer for 4 years with no firewall, so I did not really think I had a problem with hackers - boy was I wrong. After running computer for 4 hours last night and 2 hours this morning I have had 92 intrusion alerts. 81 of these were "pings" (internet noise - low threat), but 11 were high threat alerts where my ports were trying to be accessed or scannned. If you go to www.service.symantec.com/fixit and do not readily find "If you downloaded the Virus Defs of 7 and 8 Jan..." or clicking on the blue text link underneath does not bring up the program for installing the Updated Verisign Trust Ceertificates (looks like Symantec has already changed the page).. Scroll further down the page and click the "+" link next to Norton SystemWorks, and see if that will bring up the link for installing the Updated Verisign Trust Certificates. Although Symantec did not mention this, if you are unable to DLL and install the Updated Verisign Trust Certificates, try the I.E. "Quick Fix" first - your old Trust Certificates may be preventing you from accessing the program for installing the Updated Trust Certificates, or it might prevent you from downloaded and installing the Updated Trust Certificates. Yest morning, I was unable to open the NSW main program, I could not right click on a file for Properties, and my machine was running extremely slow - thought my HD had lapsed to the DOS Compatibility Mode. Refreshed Drivers for all hardware. Still same - thought I had picked up new virus that Symantec had not put out Virus Def for. If you running Norton SystemWorks, and after downloading the Virus Defs of 7 or 8 Jan, your computer running excessively slow, it takes forever to open the NSW Main Program, or you cannot manually connect to Live Update, you got hit with the Verisign Trust Certificate problem. Hold times for Symatec Support lines have been around an hour yesterday and today. Yesterday I kept a speaker phone on for 50 mins. As far as I know this was only a prob for I.E. 6 - Symantec still investigating. Correct Fix: go to www.service.symantec.com/fixit You will automatically be transferred to the correct page. Click on the blue text link, under the text "If after dowloading the Virus Defs of 7 or 8 Jan.." From the link you can install the most up to date Verisign Trust Certificates. The install program will by default put the Trust Certificates in correct place. Bookmark the original Symantec page you got from the URL above. Symantec still investigating, and will add more info to page as they get. Easy Fix: Go to I.E. Properties > Advanced Tab > Security > Uncheck the block that says "Check for Publishers Revocation Certificate". Also the block under that if checked (this block is not a default block), but the "Check for Publishers Revocation Certificate" is a Security default setting. If you did the Easy Fix first, you can go back, re-check the block "Check for Publishers Revocation Certificate" after doing the install of the updated Verisign Trust Certificates. -- If you are using the Mail Washer program to routinely bounce Spam mail, please note that it is your mail address that is sent as the originator of the "bounce" mail, and not the address of your IP. When you do this, you are letting the originator of the Spam know that your mail address is good. After using Mail Washer to bounce Spam mail, my Spam mail showed a significant increase. About 2 wks ago, I asked for an easy to use/set-up Spyware Detection Program, something that was freeware/shareware and I could DLL from internet. You guys came through with LAVASOF Ad-Aware Vers 6.0 (free), and it is great. Now I am looking for easy to use/set-up Firewall. Something that will live with Norton SystemsWork and will not prevent the automatic update of virus derfinitions. Last year I ordered a Norton Firewall. I read through the manual, and the set-up sounded like the pre-flight check list for a 727. I should know, had P/P including instrument, twin-engine (also turbo-prop and jet), and helo ratings for 30 Yrs until Thyroid Eye Disease would not allow me to pass Flight Physical. Ham Radio and flying - nothing better !! Now being an O.F. prefer simpler side of life. A Ham's Night Before Christmas ~~ (Yet another corruption of Clement Clarke Moore's classic Christmas tale, this time distorted by Gary Pearce KN4AQ, and the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society, Raleigh, NC, December 2, 1996.) Twas the night before Christmas, And all through two-meters, Not a signal was keying up Any repeaters. The antennas reached up, From the tower quite high, To catch the weak signals That bounced from the sky. The children, Tech-Pluses, Took their HT's to bed, And dreamed of the day They'd be Extras, instead. Mom put on her headphones, I plugged in the key, And we tuned 40 meters For that rare ZK3. When the meter was pegged by a signal with power. It smoked a small diode, and, I swear, shook the tower. Mom yanked off her phones, And with all she could muster Logged a spot of the signal On the DX PacketCluster, While I ran to the window And peered up at the sky, To see what could generate RF that high. It was way in the distance, But the moon made it gleam - A flying sleigh, with an Eight element beam, And a little old driver who looked slightly mean. So I though for a moment, That it might be Wayne Green. But no, it was Santa The Santa of Hams. On a mission, this Christmas To clean up the bands. He circled the tower, Then stopped in his track, And he slid down the coax Right into the shack. While Mom and I hid Behind stacks of CQ, This Santa of hamming Knew just what to do. He cleared off the shack desk Of paper and parts, And filled out all my late QSLs For a start. He ran copper braid, Took a steel rod and pounded It into the earth, till The station was grounded. He tightened loose fittings, Resoldered connections, Cranked down modulation, Installed lightning protection. He neutralized tubes In my linear amp... (Never worked right before -- Now it works like a champ). A new, low-pass filter Cleaned up the TV, He corrected the settings In my TNC. He repaired the computer That would not compute, And he backed up the hard drive And got it to boot. Then, he reached really deep In the bag that he brought, And he pulled out a big box, "A new rig?" I thought! "A new Kenwood? An Icom? A Yaesu, for me?!" (If he thought I'd been bad it might be QRP!) Yes! The Ultimate Station! How could I deserve this? Could it be all those hours that I worked Public Service? He hooked it all up And in record time, quickly Worked 100 countries, All down on 160. I should have been happy, It was my call he sent, But the cards and the postage Will cost two month's rent! He made final adjustments, And left a card by the key: "To Gary, from Santa Claus. Seventy-Three." Then he grabbed his HT, Looked me straight in the eye, Punched a code on the pad, And was gone - no good bye. I ran back to the station, And the pile-up was big, But a card from St. Nick Would be worth my new rig. Oh, too late, for his final came over the air. It was copied all over. It was heard everywhere. There was a fairly good opening this morning beginning around 0715 E.S.T. (1215 UTC) from TO4E to USA as far North as PA, and as far West as TX along the sunrise gray-line. This was on 12M CW. As the Winter solstice is approaching, the Earth is getting closer to the Sun which means the ionosphere is rapidly inonizing just after sunrise. This allows propagation on the higher bands. If you have a few minutes of daylight before having to leave for work, you might check 12M in the mornings, also 15 and 10M for TO4E. If you would like to bring back a little nostalgia and re-live your Novice days, turn down your keyer speed and come on down to 30M. 30M seems to be a very popular band for the new hams dipping their feet in the CW waters for the first time and those honing their CW skills. Most of these Ops have an excellent signal and they really appreciate a QSO, especially from the older, more experienced hams. Remember your Novice days when everyone always traded QSL cards ? Well, just offer your card by saying, "QSL via QRZ.Com, and I will send my card right back." Sit back and watch your mail box fill up. In the past two months, I have accumulated a stack of about sixty cards, and I am not far from WAS. Also, you get some very nice, appreciative comments on the incoming cards. Also 7040 KHz on 40M seems to another favorite spot for newcomers to the CW sport. NOAA is predicting the solar storm from the recent strong flare to reach the G3 level: 1) Voltage correction required on power grid systems 2) Intermittent alarms on power grid protection devices 3) Intermittent satellite communications 4) Intermittent radio black-outs on sun-lit portions of the earth www.msnbcnews.com has a good article with a description of the G1 thru G5 levels of solar storm activity, and a description of the R1 thru R5 levels of effects on HF and satellite communications. [DX-CHAT] Switch Cleaner/Lubricant
Anybody know where/how I can obtain some trichlorethylene ?? Years ago, most drug stores could get this for you, but not anymore. A mixture of 50 % mineral oil and 50 % trichlor is the best all purpose switch cleaner and lubricant I have found. It is non-contaminating and will not harm plastic, phenolic, fibre, or ceramic wafers. It is also non-flammable. Radio Shack used to carry this mixture for years with a flourocarbon propellant in their contact cleaner. With the ban on flourocarbon propellants, they changed the chemical compound in their spray cleaner and it is "useless". This mixture beats anything Caig Chemicals sells as a contact cleaner, as has been my experience. Wellpersonally I prefer Rhodesia over Zimbawe, and Burma over Mynamar, but I am an "O.F" and I grew up with these names as a young SWL and DX'er. With the end of the Colonization Period and independence, many countries have chosen more traditional names in the native dialogue. I am sure that we would all prefer United States of America rather than keep the old name of New Britainia. The New Hebridies sounds much more romantic than Vanatau - I can't even spell it off the bat without looking it up, much less pronounce it correctly. If you try to pronounce it in English from the correct spelling using what you think the correct syllables are, 99.9 % of us will mis-pronounce it. Whatever we think, is just whatever we think. We are all entitled to an opinion, right or wrong. These countries, however, have gained their independence like we did, so they are certainly entitled to a name of their choice. I am sure the people of these countries could care less whether we like it or not. and like it or not, it is Hatfield, Zimbawe. Oddly enough the large towns in these countries have, for the most part, retained their original names. Of course Ho Chi Minh City is a definite exception, but I think the former South Vietnam is definite exception altogethor. (Strictly an opinion). This is probably the most often asked question among DX'ers these days withWhen are the band conditions going to improve ?? running a close second. Here is what works for me: Double and tripple check your QSL route, DX address, Manager address, etc. For DX and DX Overseas Managers from US, I affix the proper amount of international postage to my pre-addressed return envelope. I usually include 1 or 2 IRC's in my mailing. This is not a gift. This is my way of helping the DX get a QSL or a way of saying TKS to the manager handling the cards. For the more rare, and in demand DX, I most often enclose 2 - 3 greenstamps. This is to help with his QSL costs. For major DXpeditions, I usually enclose a personal check of from $ 10.00 - $ 30.00 to help defray QSL costs. I have never had a problem with a personal check "going through". If you do enclose a personal check, make sure you write "US" after you "write out" the dollar amount. This will put "US" before "dollars" on your check, and there will be no confusion as to the actual amount of the check. No, I am not rich or financially independent. DX QSL cards are just a financial investment in my hobby. I wait at leat 6 Mos for a return on a DX card or DX Mgr card. I will wait longer if I know there has been a delay in getting logs from a DX Op to the Mgr (T31MY for example), or a DXpedition getting cards printed (ZL7C for example). After about 6 Mos, I will resend my QSL registered mail. The US Postal Service does lose mail. Good question is where the "black hole" is. Last year, I had a home mortgage and car payment, mailed the same day, never reach the correct destination. I never knew it until next month when my amount due was double plus a late fee. I called the financial institutions, explained the situation, and the late fees went away. The original checks have never cleared my bank, and probably never will. If they do somehow surface, I am a month ahead. Point here is, outgoing QSL cards get lost as well. My QSL cards to Baldur, DJ6SI, for the T5X and J5X Ops a few years back never made it to Baldur. My card to Frank, V51AS, for A25/V51AS never made it as well. It was probably among the pilfered mail found in a dry river bed at his QTH. If the world economy worsens, pilfered mail and careless "unhappy" postal workers will probably result in more lost cards. Waiting 5 - 6 months for a "new one" to arrive and wondering is NOT a good feeling. Believe me, I know. H.many times good intentions end up with just that, good intentions. To my knowledge, we amateurs world-wide can adopt any operating practice we like as long as: 1. That practice is withinin the guidelines of the laws and regulations governing the issuance and use of our license. 2. That practice is in keeping with the spirit, fraternalism, and international good-will of amateur radio. Since "??" and "QRL??" don't seem to be too badly broken on the bands, most of you have said, "Why fix them ?" Thanks all for your imput !! Many, many thanks to all who made a post and provided some good feedback on my orignal post about a new "Q" Signal needed for "Is the Frequency is Use ?" for CW Ops. Still early in day, so sure there will be some more feedback. QFY was a good one ! QRL ?, ??, all work, and "IE" as long as I been around, can't believe this one was new to me, but great idea ! Glad nobody mentioned QRZ ? - this one is just way out in left field. Guess maybe I didn't emphasize, but whatever "signal" we use, I say let's standardize it. Let's put in the ARRL Operating Manual, in the back of the ARRL Paper Log, which lot of OT's like me still use. Let's promulgate it. Let's put out the word about "asking if the frequency is in use" for CW. Is this in the ARRL training material for new hams ? It has been my experience that new operating procedures that work well are picked up very rapidly and spread rapidly. I do believe that 98 % of Ops want to pick up and use the latest "in thing" that is being used on the bands. As all of you know, there is nothing more irritating than another station plopping down on your QRG and start tuning up or calling CQ w/o asking if the frequency is in use, especially if you have weak copy on a rare one that you are working. At one time or another, I think we all make the mistake of not asking if the the frequency is in use. I have noticed that with increasing age and very poor health, I have become more "absent minded". Two nights ago, very late, I plopped down on a frequency on 30M when the band seemed dead and "absently minded" started calling CQ w/o asking if the frequency was in use. I interrupted a QSO that was in progress on the freq and felt very badly about it. I did not get "fussed or cussed", but one of the Ops told the other station "missed some of your last as K4WLS started calling CQ w/o asking if the freq was in use" - very bad publicity for my name-sake So whatever works well now, or what would work well, let's get it in print, let's advetise it, let's train the new Hams on it, and let's use it !!! Would someone at ARRL who is in a leadership position take the following for action, pass it through the hallowed halls, under that "curved piece of wood", and promulgate in the right direction. Oh, Wayne Mills, what say OM ? We CW Ops have needed an appropriate "Q" Signal for years for "Is the frequency in use ?" QRL ? - "Are you (your station) busy (sending/receiving traffic) ? does not fit. QRZ ? - Who (what station) is calling me ? does not fit. I though about QFU: F - Freuency, U - use. That does fit, but well we CW Ops know that at times (especially in unruly pile-ups), we hear all too many "FU's". So...What about QFB ? - Is the Frequency Busy (in use) ? What say CW Ops - can anyone come up with a better one ? On SSB, "Is the frequency is use ?" - that's easy. We CW guys need something more fitting than QRL or QRZ ! Best Ear of Year Award has got to got to G3AB while operating VK9XAB on 01 Sep 03 at 1150 UTC. I found VK9XAB on 14027 KHz working split and clg USA. I have been after a VK9/X for 8 Yrs now. I found a hole 2 KHz up and called. he answered me on the first call - my 100W and H.B. vertical. I jumped up with glee, went to sit back down, the Op chair slipped out from under me, and I did a flat tail- bone landing on floor ripping headphones out of jack. Got back up, nervous, flubbed my report, calmed down, and finally paddled my report and confirmed my call. He was patiently waiting and sent my call back with a TU !! Man I am one Happy Fella..and I definitely took the time to thank the Lord on this one One QSO I will never forget.we all have some of those. [DX-CHAT] Autumn is Here /Solar and Gephysical Forecast
Last Mon when the prop condx were better than normal, I noticed that the Autumnal 20M LP has returned. From NC, 20M LP was open to the S. Pac around 1230 UTC. Matter of of fact, caught H44VV on his first CQ. From 1300 UTC to 1400 UTC, 20M was open to the Indian Ocean with FR5FG worked, and heard a VQ9 running a big pile-up. The VQ9 was really loud here. 40M LP is prob also around, but the ionsopheric storms due to coronal mass streaming are keeping the paths closed. Here is a good NOAA web page that gives the Current Solar and Geophysical (ionospheric) Conditions. It also gives a 3 day forecast of solar and geophysical conditions which I have found to be pretty accurate. [DX-CHAT] Honor Roll, Top of the Honor Roll
Well, I have 327 cfmd on CW with 100W and vertical/wires. I have not even sent my cards in to the the ARRL DXCC desk. Sure, some might not be good counters due to lack of documentation or other reasons, but to me they all good. What really that great about being on the Honor Roll and the Honor Roll plaque when you pass from this QTH. You can't take it with you. I know what I have accomplished, and for me that is a great reward in itself. I work DX for the sheer fun of it and the great feeling of working a new one (like H44VV Mon Morn - a new one on 40M CW). Another great pleasure is getting those very nice picture QSL cards. Now I know everyone has their own goals, and I am certainly NOT berating the DXCC program or those who have the goal of Honor Roll or Top of Honor Roll. If your goal is Top of Honor Roll, hope you are not too dissapointed as there are a lot of entities out there that I will probably not see activated in my life time, and you may not see activated in your life time. [DX-CHAT] Some Thoughts on DX Pile--Up/QSO Coutesy
Early this past Mon morn, H44VV (UA4HWX) had a nice simplex pile-up going on 7.0046 KHz. H44VV was using proper QSO exchange procedure in that in his ending QSO XMSN, he was giving the call sign of the station he had just worked and his own call sign. A big problem, however, was that most stations trying to work H44VV were not waiting for him end his QSO exchange. Instead, they hammered their calls while H44VV was still transmitting. Do stations doing this not realize that if H44VV is still transmitting, he cannot hear their initial calls ? Also, do they not realize they are many time preventing the station that H44VV just worked from confirming his QSO ? Also, do they not realize that they are blocking the call sign of H44VV, preventing other stations from getting a proper call sign ID ?? It was very evident that the stations who were prematurely calling H44VV were running high power and/or high gain antennas. Oh yes, I got through to H44VV with my 100W and little Inverted Vee, but I had to use a little trick up my sleeve. I just wonder how many other "Little Pistols" didn't make it, however, because of this premature calling. Why is it common practice these days for stations working DX to never give the call sign of the DX station they worked ?? Are they trying to save time giving the opportunity for other stations to work the DX, or are they purposely omitting the call sign sign of the DX in order to not help another station work the DX ? I do belive that FCC Regs still require the ID of your station and the ID of the station you are in contact with at least once during a QSO. [DX-CHAT] CW Send Speed - QRS
Due to the lousy prop on the higher bands of late, I have been spending a lot of time on 30M. Probably, due to the same reason, so have a lot of New Ops just getting their feet wet on CW and Older Ops getting back on the air whose CW is a bit rusty. About 90 % of the time I have found that these New Ops and Older Ops are sending around 5 WPM faster than what they can copy. If during a QSO, a sta told me my CW was too fast and I was sending at the same speed he was sending, I politely told him so, and added the remark that his CW speed was what the other Op almost always used as a guage for his send speed. So, I said, please adjust your send speed to what you can copy. I of course went QRS to say this. Many stas thanked me for this tip, while other stations, even with strong signals, never came back to me after this suggestion. I really did not mean to humiliate anyone or make anyone get upset, I just thought it was a helpful tip. Not once, however, did I hear PSE QRS from the other sta. QRS has always meant "Please decrease your send speed to WPM", or today just simply decrease your send speed. If you are a New Op just getting your feet wet with CW or an Older Op just getting back on the bands and your CW is a bit rusty, please adjust your send speed to what you can comfortably copy. Most experienced CW Ops are very congenial and obliging. Even if you happen to make out the call of a CQ faster than you can copy, call the sta and give a PSE QRS. Bet the other Op will slow down for a QSO with you. Don't ever feel bad about having to tell the other station to QRS. I can't copy 45 WPM anymore, so I often have to say QRS myself !!! [DX-CHAT] The New DX-News
For the past few days I have been reading the mail on the new DX-News. I must say it has done my ole heart good, and brought back fond memories of years gone by when [DX-News] was [NJDXR]. On Saturday nights, for those of us that didn't make it out to one of those Iron Chef places, [NJDXR] became for a few hours one large range "80M round-table" DX discussion net. Now thanks to the insight of Urb, Steve, and others we have this list net solely for that purpose. For the past three years, Urb, Steve, and Ron have stuck with me through thick and thin, and more often than not it was "thin". One of these days I hope to meet Urb LeJeune in person, as I personally know he is a "one in a million guy". Here in NC there is a Marine Corps base called Camp LeJeune. LeJeune is a name that you do not run across very often. I happened to ask Urb one evening in a mail if there was a connection between his last name and Camp LeJeune. Turns out there is direction connection. Maybe Urb will post the URL so you can read about the namesake of Camp LeJeune. Urb is a pretty modest guy, but maybe he will. Bottom line is I am not "blowing smoke" or "nose-gating" anyone, I would just like to thank Urb, Steve, and Ron for being a "true freind" to me through thick and thin, and for all us DXers, keeping the news and chat coming. By the way, Steve is "The Chandelier Man". Once in awhile you will hear him rattling the chandeliers saying, "This discussion is moved to DX-Chat." :-) :-) Anyway, a great "big thanks" to DX-Chat, DX-News, Urb, Steve, and Ron. Here is what I have been able to find out: OM2SA had mailed out approx 3,000 cards as of the middle of June. Still over 43,000 to process as of that time, and more trickling in. Hmmm...I have plenty of patience in a pile-up - maybe it's because I only running 100W/Vert/Wires. Maybe I was a bit under-patient on T31MY - it is the ONLY outstanding confirmation needed on 40 M CW. Everything worked on all other bands confirmed. Or.maybe it is because I am acutely aware of the many QSL card Black Holes out there. Worked SV9BN on 20M CW on 14Jul03 at 0323 UTC. The OP said QSL via EA7FTR. I listened for a few minutes after working him just to verify the QSL Mgr, and he had a pretty good pile-up of EU/USA going. I have been unable to verify EA7FTR as QSL Mgr. Anybody else on this list work SV9BN ?? I have a lot of SV9/ on many bands, but this is the first straight-lace (non-portable) SV9 call I have ever heard on the air. Course, could be a Pirate/Slim. MNI TKS all the mail. I had Dave's call wrong. It is 7P8DA and not 7P8SV. I tried a long shot this morn to see if 20M would be open from 7P8 to NC just after sunrise in 7P8, and also to see if one of the 7P8 guys was on 20M. Well Lady Luck was there. Worked 7P8IZ, Igor - W0IZ, on 14.005 Mhz at 0615 UTC (0215 local). Prop was sure shakey to East Coast. He was 539 - 559 with lots QSB. Igor was calling CQ more than working stas at this time. I called 1 KHz up and he came back to my first call and gave me 559. I told him to tell Dave "hello" for me. The Europeans were copying Igor, but none could get through. Now that's a switch. Igor's signal steadily improved to S7 over the next 45 mins and he started getting a pile-up of mid-west and west coast USA stas. After about 45 mins, Igor fastly went into the noise level. Still trying for Dave, 7P8DA, on the low bands. Any you folks hooked up with Dave, 7P8SV (K4SV), in Lesotho yet ?? If so would you pse send me a personal mail and let me know band/mode/time/ur QTH. My W6EL Prop shows limited openings on 40 and 30M for QTH in NC. Slow moving cold front in mid-west been keeping S.E. inundated with nasty thundersorms last 3 eves, so op time limited and when no storms nasty QRN. Also have not heard a sta from AF on any bands in months. Only thing I have heard to East in Southern Hemisphere on 30M has been 3B8FG. Course now I only running a good vertical and no tower/yagi !! This constant solar wind from a favorably positioned [favorable position ??? :-) :-) ] coronal hole keeping the Bz component of magnetosphere irritated with resulting ionospheric disturbances is really getting to be a drag !!! I don't need 7P8 on any bands, but would like to hook up with good friend Dave, 7P8SV. Many thanks all the input folks - this was interesting. Using the TopoZone web site provided by Jack, I got right down to the neighborhood and street in Belmont, NC where I live. The map showed Belmont Jr. High instead of Belmont High School so the map was as recent as 23 years. Clicking the mouse on the exact location of my house on my street gave me: 35.239 N, and 81.047 W I do live in an old section of town where the streets and geography have not changed in at least 63 years. If you live in a new sub-section or housing area, TopoZone may not work for you, since TopZone is based on the latest USCGS maps. Using the ZipInfo web site provided by Urb, I just entered my Zip Code of 28012 and got: 35.234 N, and 81.041W I do live close to the post office. If your QTH is within reasonable distance to your post office, the ZipInfo web site is much easier and faster to use. In my case the difference is negligble and sure won't make any difference in my sunrise/sunset times for my GeoClock program or propagation predictions by W6EL.
