No longer an assumption now!

THIS is why it wasn't working for me. I was trying to do it by "remote control"
from elsewhere!

I made a test file on THIS computer and it worked.
Transferred the test file to the OTHER machine and it also worked.
Somehow I was making one other minor mistake ... after I had tried it in the
correct spot.

Good thing to know. Kind'a thought that was the case...
I've actually been monitoring the list a little for some time now... but hadn't
sent anything.
MOST times I can figure out most of what is needed.

Hmmm... I did register quite some time ago.
Actually sending thie message, I grabbed the address to post straight off
someone else's post.
My issue HERE may be that I'm using a different computer than the one I
registered on.
THAT one... is down and not functional... so maybe the mailing software is
blocking me from posting directly because I'm not posting from the origin
machine that I originally subscribed from... a borrowed computer.

Second, I don't know how to tell / determine what kind of document it is... between
database or ... "Calc'... whatever distinguishes.
At the top left of the window in which you are working should appear the
filename followed by the application that has opened the file - Calc for
spreadsheet or Base for database.

Third, from the Get Info box... on one ( Macbook ) computer, I'm using ...
Version: OpenOffice 4.1.8 AOO418m3 (Build:9803)

...and on a different computer ( a more often used iMac)
Version: 3.1.1 (Build: 9420)

The formula I should have used works logically elsewhere outside OO, but not in
the OO document.
When asking originally, I errored using the above as a two part formula... that
actually contained a problem in the first place.
Apologies for the mistaken way I described my predicament originally.
Mathematically I could / should have written it as...

If K102 < 14 then L102 = "Yes", else L102 = "No"
I'll continue to assume Calc until proven otherwise. Note that a
spreadsheet formula can only affect the cell in which it is contained.
If you want to display the "Yes" or "No" in L102 then the formula must
be in L102 and would be:

=IF(K102 < 14; "Yes"; "No")

... but I most certainly still do not understand how to make that work right in
my document.
I can set up a simplified version if that helps everything... and if it's ok to

What you "think" is not helpful to others. It takes only seconds to

You haven't said which component of AOO you are working with. You
mention database but then mention adjacent cells, which would suggest Calc.

Assuming the latter, a formula like the following should achieve what
you seem to want. You haven't mentions what to display if value is
between 10 and 14 so I've used UNDEFINED; replace with whatever you
want. Assuming your "value" is in A1, place in B1

=IF( A1 > 14; "NO"; IF( A1 <= 10; "YES" ; "UNDEFINED"))

Date stamp format help

2023-06-28 Thread Crisy
Hello,

I am trying to make the default format of the Date stamp to be
*example* "Friday,
December 31, 1999"
but every time I set it and go you use the Date stamp again it is back to the
12/31/99 style and I have to edit each one. Even if I use it multiple times
in one document. It'll still go back to the default "12/31/99" and I'll have
to edit each one individually. I tried searching everywhere on how to change
it and even tried running as administrator on the app. Nothing is helping
or working. Is that not possible? Please help.

Kind Regards,

You mention you're using a Mac.

Mac has a program called Time Machine. It is installed on Mac from the

If it is set to do backups, then check in Time Machine for your file.

Re: Help Making Sense of .csv Files

2023-02-09 Thread Alan B
Hello Linda,

I opened the file, "Active Provider Directory 20220902", in Calc. The
columns I'm seeing with lots of spaces are additional details like
ADDRESS2, OTHER SPECIALTIES, OTHER LANGUAGES. Not a surprise they wouldn't
be completed.

Things you are interested in, like speciality and location, have values for
every row of the file I imported.

Columns, PROVIDER NAME, ADDRESS 1, CITY, STATE, ZIP, COUNTY, PROVIDER TYPE,
PRIMARY SPECIALTY, OTHER SPECIALTIES, CONTRACTS and a few more have values
in every row of the sheet.

Using Calc "AutoFilter" it is a few clicks to filter by CITY and PRIMARY
SPECIALTY, for example.
e.g. filter for city = "Athens" and primary speciality = "Allergy and
Immunology". Applying those filters gets four results out of the 270,993
rows in the file.
Not sure how you're opening the file.

If you're not opening the file in Calc, that's step 1.

#1 Find the downloaded file and right-click it then click "open with Calc"
or "Calc" on the menu. If that's not there, look for the "Open with" option
on the menu and click that. The submenu that opens will have Calc on the
list. Click it.

#2 Calc will present a "Text Import" dialog before the data is displayed in
the spreadsheet. In that dialog set "Separator Options" to "Separated by"
and be certain the ONLY option checked is "Comma". Then click "OK"

#3 Now that the file is open before you click Data > AutoFilter on the
menu. The column titles on the first row will now have little downward
pointing triangles next to each title. Click on those as needed to filter
the list to see only what you want.

VERY IMPORTANT step saver if you want to refer to the file again. The file
is still .csv. AutoFilter cannot be saved in .csv.
#4 Click File > Save on the menu. A warning about "Confirm File Format"
will appear. Click the "Use ODF Format" button and then click the "Save"
button.

Next time you want to use the file, open the spreadsheet file (ODF format
file), not the .csv file, and your AutoFilter will still be in place and
ready to use.

Re: Help Making Sense of .csv Files

2023-02-09 Thread Gerry Dutchie
 Hi Linda,

I have checked the first csv-file on the website you mentioned. It seems a
normal file although not all the fields are filled with data. Hence probably
your impression of 'huges spaces' in between data?

It is a comma delimited csv file, this means that de fields (e.g. name,
address, town, etc)  are seperated by commas and all information of one doctor
is put in one long line whereby the bits and pieces are seperated by comma's.

OpenOffice can seperate these lines into columns:

1. On your desktop you will find the OpenOffe icon.
2. Use File Explorer (I work on Windows) or similar for your operating system.
3. Drag the downloaded csv file and drop it on the OpenOffice icon.
4. OO will respond with a dialogbox in with you tick Comma under 'Seperated'
and remove any other ticks that may be there. The dialog will show you the
results allready.  (Other csv files may use ; or tab as delimiter, which you
also find in the dialog).
5. Click OK. The file will be distributed over columns. The first line shows
the names of the fields, e.g. what data is presented in the column.

Now you can proceed to work with it as you are used to, using lists; e.g. sort,
search etc.

Good luck & kind regards from The Royalk Kingdom of The Netherlands ;-)))

Re: need help, please

2022-11-12 Thread PCS

Dear Marie,

I’ve had the 'do you want to reopen' or 'do you want to recover' messages from
time to time, but the recovery has always worked for me so I’ve never had to
fix your problem. But I offer the following suggestions:

1. Have you tried restarting your Mac to see if that clears the problem?
My apologies for stating the obvious, but just in case you are an ‘always on’
person and that slipped your mind.

2. If the app is really stuck and nobody else offers a better solution, I
would uninstall OpenOffice (i.e. drag it from the apps folder to the trash) and
then download and install a fresh copy of the app. (And hope that the problem
doesn’t carry through in any settings or extensions that weren’t replaced when
you replaced the app.) I’m still using ADSL internet so it takes a while to
download a new copy of an app, but it’s probably better to just do that than to
spend even more time and personal energy chasing a ‘better’ solution.

3. In the unlikely event that installing a virgin copy of OpenOffice
doesn’t fix the problem, I would try replacing OO with LibreOffice, on the
chance that might fix it.

I haven’t been down into the engine room of a Mac since OS-X replaced the
Classic OS, but simple work-arounds like these usually work for me when I have
a problem that has to be fixed and I don’t know how to fix it. It may be
equivalent to using a sledge hammer instead of precision tools, but if it works

2022-11-12 Thread Steven Ahlers
This often happens when there was a hasty shutdown or crash of the computer.
Click on the Apple icon and select Force Quit. Close any program/app other than
Finder that is running. Then look in the folder that you store files in for
files that have ~lock. in their name and delete them (probably just the problem
file). Restart your computer, start OpenOffice, and then open the file.

Make sure you let the program completely shut down before shutting down your
computer. Also get in the habit of saving your files and shutting down
OpenOffice when you are walking away from your computer for extended periods of
time.

As a courtesy to you I have sent you a copy of this message. As a courtesy to

Re: Help!!!!!

2022-10-19 Thread PCS

I use locked files as a work-around for stationery because Mac OS hasn’t done
that right since the classic OS, i.e. since before OS-X. I don’t remember how
locked OpenOffice files could be unlocked (I haven’t used OO recently), but
locked (i.e. Read Only) LibreOffice documents have an “Edit Document” button
just below the top RH corner that unlocks them. When you try to type into a
locked RTF document it opens a small menu panel, maybe OpenOffice did it that
way? But if there is no convenient way to unlock a document after you have
opened it you can, on the Mac, right-click on the document’s icon, select “Get
Info” in the pop-up menu, and untick the “Locked” box, then the document will
no longer be locked. I don’t know how to do this on Windows, but I’m sure it
must have some equivalent procedure.

What error messages do you sere when you try to edit/update the sheet?

Note, the "Record Changes" option has no impact on a read only file.

Try finding the file with your OS (operating system's) file manager (eg.
Windows Explorer) and if the file is set read only by the OS,
untick/uncheck that setting in the file manager's properties option.

An alternative workaround would be to select the entire contents of the
original worksheet and paste into a new empty worksheet, then save the
copy under a slightly different name. If the new copy of the worksheet
is working as required you can delete the original

It might help if you said what your aims were!

when on text documents I choose landscape and then click on 2

left column because the cursor will not travel to the right hand column .

That's exactly what is supposed to happen. Columns work the way that
a newspaper is structured: as you enter text, the first column is
filled first and text flows naturally to the next column when the
first is full - just as text flows from page to page when you don't
have columns. If you wish to skip to the next column before one
column is full, you can do this using Insert | Manual Break... | Type
| Column break.

But it sounds as if what you may really be trying to do is to lay out
text in the two sides of your page independently, in which case
columns are not the way to go. Instead, consider using a table (Table
| Insert > | Table...) with one row and two columns. Tables do not
need to have borders, so they need not be visible in the final document.

Are you perhaps trying to create a booklet, by folding multiple
sheets in landscape orientation? If so, you may like to investigate
OpenOffice's useful Brochure facility. You create a document in
portrait orientation and with the final actual page size - half the
paper size - and then print it with the paper in landscape
orientation. OpenOffice takes care of sorting the pages of the
document so that they print in such a way that the stack of sheets
can be folded into a properly sequenced booklet.

I trust this helps.

Re: PLEASE Help. I cannot open an Open Office file saved to my desktop.

2022-04-25 Thread PCS

My apologies if I am stating the obvious, but maybe it can be opened by another
application. If you are using a Macintosh, right-click on the OO document and
select "Open With” and try one of the non-default apps in the list. I have
found that you can usually get usable text if you open an inaccessible document
with TextEdit, though you may have to strip out a lot of formatting characters
to make it easily readable, then copy it to and reformat it in a new WP
document. If you are using Windows I assume it must have some equivalent of the
Mac’s “Open With”.

Re: HELP WITH MAC VERSION & MORE

2022-02-23 Thread PCS

I do not have the technical expertise to be able to decipher the error messages
generated by the system, and I believe they are intended to enable developers
to find bugs and fix them in future versions, not to enable you to be provided
with feedback, so for a glitch like you have described I would quit the app and
re-launch it, or Force Quit and re-launch it, if necessary, though that appears
to have happened already in your case.

If that hasn’t fixed the problem I would shut down and restart the computer,
then try the app again, and if that doesn’t fix it I would uninstall the OO app
(just move it from the Apps folder to the trash initially, and leave it there
until you’ve sorted the problem, “just in case") and download a virgin copy of
the app and install that to see if that fixes the problem, then empty the
corrupted copy of the app from the trash if the app re-install fixes the
problem. This is only a user work-around, not a technician’s fix, but it has
worked for me on occasion in the past.

My apologies if I am stating the obvious and you have already done what I am
suggesting.

Unfortunately, if that doesn’t work I don’t have any idea how to fix the
problem, other than to suspect a possible glitch in the OS requiring it to be
fixed or reinstalled, or you could update instead of reinstall if you have not
got the latest version (I generally defer major updates until most of the
glitches are sorted out by the early adopters), but I have never had to do an
OS reinstall, other than the time I corrupted an OS update by doing something
stupid part-way through the install process and turned the computer into a
paperweight. I have some gripes with Apple Computer but I have always found the
Mac OS to be stable and reliable.

If you do suspect the OS may have a glitch, do NOT just go ahead and do a
reinstall, that is a tedious, time consuming job. Instead begin by booting into
the Mac’s diagnostics at startup, i.e. press the power button and immediately
hold down the D key until diagnostics begins. I have not used that since the
time I turned my MacMini into a paperweight, quite a few years ago now, and I
don't have time to check it now, so I can’t promise it will enable you to solve
your problem, but if all else has failed it could be worth looking at the
diagnostics before you go as far as reinstalling the OS. But be careful, bad
things might happen if you do the wrong thing there. However I would be
surprised if the things I first suggested don’t fix your problem, I can’t
recall ever having had an app problem that was caused by the OS.

Regards,

PCS.

Hi Kay, you need to change the program your files are associated with.

Find the file, right click and selecting Open with > Choose another app

Once you're on that screen tick the "Always use the app to open
[filetype] files"

Then find Open Office Cal or whatever program you need to open it, in
the list of available programs, you might have to click on more apps,
and chose look for another app on this pc.

The program you need is most likely in Windows > Program Files (x86) >
OpenOffice 4 > program

Select scalc.exe (for spreadsheets) open. After you do this is should
work on it's own.

You can use this for any file type, just select the corresponding
OOProgram to open it.

Hello folks ~

I've been using OpenOffice on my old computer for many years and it's been

sign up for their services when I try to open it. I'm really confused and

Desperately need help with installation error installing Open Office...

2022-01-01 Thread Pervaiz
I keep getting this error message installing
Open Office 4.1.11 as well as 4.1.9.

"This installation package could not be opened.
Verify that the package exists and that you
can access it, or contact the application vendor
to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Watched several videos on YouTube but haven't
come across one showing me how to fix this error.

Checked http://www.openoffice.org/support/ as well as
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15=11706=325749=installation+error+This+installation+package+could+be+opened.#p325749

The Readme file suggested installing Java that I did.

If someone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

*Pervaiz "PK" Karim*

Ego and egotism are two things entirely. We each have an ego, as defined by
Freud - it is our thinking mind's sense of identity. Egotism, however,
is a symptom
of a fearful mind. When, through personal growth, the mind is increasingly
created by our loving source, then ego becomes transparent. The reactive
ego tends to be negative, the mindful presence to be positive.
Which is the true you?

*“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what **it
takes to sit down and listen.”* ~ Winston Churchill
Why courage to listen? Because we are opening up to alternative ideas and as
a result our precious beliefs and fixed ideas may be threatened and our ego
rightness put in question. But without genuine listening there is no chance
of real progress being made. To move ahead, we need not be afraid to speak
from the heart nor to listen generously.

*“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”* ~ Lao Tzu

*“If we want to awaken, we don't need to eradicate the ego, we simply **need
to be conscious of the deeper self as well.”* ~ Timothy Freke

Need help with cascading spreadsheet inserts

2021-10-09 Thread K Salisbury
Dear OO,
I'm using OO for creating a book to contain a collection of 8,600
dictionary entries that are in spreadsheet format. (My previous collection,
of 7,000 entries, was accepted and complimented by the President of Wolfson
College, Oxford University. It's a novel type of collection. 48-hour
Books made the finished book from the pdf I made using OO.)
*The Problem:*
I place a section of the spreadsheet on each page of the text document,
within the margins. It often happens that two or more sections of
spreadsheet will cascade into a mess, leaving several blank text pages
below them. It seems to happen if I try to adjust the position of the
spreadsheet section on the text page.

I've tried to figure out the problem, but cannot be 100% sure. Can you
kindly advise me?
(Happy to email you a PDF of the first book, *The Global Evolution of Words*
.)

No. There is not. Not dealing with a corporation like Adobe, Microsoft, etc.

There are organizations that provide paid support for OpenOffice. And there
are free/community help offerings.

You can check here to look for support solutions that come closest to
meeting your needs.
https://www.openoffice.org/support/

There is one link on the page above that purports to provide a link to free
Calc lessons.

I do not have any insight into the quality or value of any offerings at the
links provided. Please, explore and find what works best for you.

How do I change the quotation marks from «» to the normal " " when I write? And
why are they «» in the first place? I've seen no stories written with quotation
marks like that...

Tried to use the auto correct option in format, but I bave to use a space then
click back for it to work, and that would be stressful when I write my stories,
clicking space and back so many times when writing their lines.

If you have an existing .csv file, OpenOffice assumes you want the
same settings, so doesn't ask. When you use File | Save As..., you
need to tick "Edit filter settings" at the foot of the Save As
dialogue to stimulate the dialogue you need.

The first question you need to answer is why you need to keep the
data in .csv format. If you save your document as a spreadsheet, your
problem will disappear.

I am able to get that accomplished in open office, but once I save
as a csv file again, it reverts back to the original file where they
are hidden. Can someone please help me with this?

If you have to use .csv format (and I'm yet to be convinced that you
do), the solution is simple:

o Ensure the cells containing your codes are formatted as Text.
o When saving, in the Export Text File dialogue, ensure "Quote all
text cells" is ticked.
o When reopening, in the Text Import dialogue, under "Other options",
ensure "Quoted field as text" is ticked.

I trust this helps.

Re: I need help!

2021-04-12 Thread JD
One solution is to changes the leading zeros to
upper case letter O.
Not an ideal solution, but
the problem is with the CSV formatter, which treats
zip codes as an arithmetic number, where leading zeros
have no arithmetic value, so they are omitted.

Help with a pdf form

2021-03-29 Thread Craig Russell
Hi,

I'm trying to create a pdf form as an odf and exported as a pdf form. [1] shows
part of the result but without the option buttons visible (the buttons are
visible on the form, just not in the screen shot).

I've created a group box with a label "Visibility". I've created four option
buttons with labels "Public" "Aggregate" "Member" and "Private" and each of
their label fields have the same entry "".

What I expected is that clicking on the buttons would turn them on and off. And
that since they are in the same group, that selecting Public and then selecting
Member would turn off Public and turn on Member.

But the actual behavior is that if I click Public, that option turns on and
never turns off, and I can turn all options on and not turn any of them off.

Is there a control that I'm missing?

I'm subscribed to this list.

Thanks,
Craig

A PDF reader is precisely that - a READER, not an Editor. In your PDF reader
you should select your text, Copy it (Ctrl C - Cmd C on a Mac) and then Paste
it (Ctrl V - Cmd V on Mac) into a blank OpenOffice Writer document. Then, in
Writer, you can edit it, Save it, and generate (/File /Export as PDF) a fresh
PDF for distribuution. For future revisions, edit the Writer document.

I or someone else may be able to help more specifically but you have
omitted some details: what is the name of this 'pdf reader' and are
you using Windows 10 or something else?

I wonder how you "wrote a story in pdf" but anyway, the main thing is
we assume the pdf is the only copy you have.

PDF is designed as a read-only format; it is a bad idea to work in that. One
should work, if using OpenOffice, in .odt format (OO's native format) and when
the work is finished /File /Export as PDF to generate PDF files for
distribution; if further editing or revision is needed, edit and Save in the
.odt file, regenerating the distribution PDF.

OpenOffice needs an extension installed to allow it do simple editing on PDF
files. This extension can be downloaded from
https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/node/17351,

It is possible that you may be able to cut and paste the text from the PDF file
into a blank OpenOffice Writer file, whether in one unit or in chunks.
Remaking such a Writer file is in my opinion a better way to proceed than
attempting to edit a PDF file, whether using OpenOffice or LibreOffice, where
the editing facilities for a PDF file are rudimentary.

Hi Pat,
This is an email based volunteer staffed support list. Sorry no phone.

However many helpful people will try to assist you. For my own effort, let
me refer you to:

Instructions, with pictures, for creating labels in Writer. Bonus,
screenshots are from a Mac. Last updated Feb, 2020
https://www.wikihow.com/Print-Address-Labels-Using-OpenOffice

More instructions with pictures. The web page is rather recent as it was
last updated July 2018. The screenshots are from Windows though which may
make following them a bit more difficult
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Writer_Guide/Print_labels_from_db

Try the above and if you don't succeed get back to the list telling us
which instructions you used and at what step you encountered problems.

2020-12-07 Thread Lucetta
I have also had this problem, this year was the first time ever in 29 years w/
computers. Was working w/ someone else in a rush working from home w/ out her
office equipment.

You are not alone!
Can you look through all the other places where you might have saved an earlier
version?

I now save documents and other important files in a variety of places going
along. Documents folder, desktop, specifically named folder for that type of
file, project folder etc. Messy but necessary for the way I work.

You can also set up a backup to an external hard drive/ rocket stick or dongle
etc so as to save elsewhere than your computer incase of hard drive problems.

Every time I save a document it gets a slightly different name. As an
example... name, date, v 1,2 etc. V being version for that date. Messy but
reliable.

You may have a slightly earlier version somewhere which would avoid you having
to redo everything. Can you do a general search w/ slightly different names?

You can also email versions to yourself. You will then have the file in your
email as sent & received mail boxes. Do this at the end of the day.

Good luck!
We have all been there & it is a hard learned lesson. Everyone has this story
too so don’t feel to bad just deal with it for the future.

If you have your own palette back it might be useful to copy it as standard.soc.
