What I have done a few times is to machine stitch around the lines of
the needlelace pattern without any thread in the machine. Granted
sometimes it is more difficult to find the same hole coming back up but
that is just as much a problem without the machine punched holes anyway.

I heard at the end of the programme that lacemaking would feature in the
next episode, but didn't actually see the trailer. I have just looked at
the BBC blog and read that the farm this time is in Devon at Morwellham

Thank you for the praise Pene. I did make the first few patterns with
the overlap at the bottom but unless I used a thicker wire it didn't
hold the shape at the base. As a tree decoration the join will not be so
obvious as one sees the ornaments further away than close up as the
photo is.

Lovely Jean, the Siesta frame has worked well. Was it difficult to
drill holes through the bars? I've only worked a couple of the
butterflies from Kortelahti's book and found it quite a fiddle opening
out the paper string. The square framed pictures are on my to do list
one day.
