::: Okay, :::Now that everyone and there mom has emailed me telling me to go to a ::: record store and listen for myselfI'd like to remind. :::you all that ::: there are a bazillion tekno records out there! And NO I don't have the ::: time to spend in a record store sifting through them all :::(assuming there ::: is a decent central tekno record store in San Diego). If you are now planning on buying records regulalry then the best way is to go into a record store and talk to the guys in there. It is there job to know what is good etc. Now that said not every record store attendant is going to have the same tastes as you, by the sounds of it your not even completely sure which genre you like. This list is dedicated to detroit techno although it seems as though other forms of minimal techno and chicago house are acceptable too. There would be no point in everyone on here giving you a top 10 when you may like jungle or trance. My suggestion is if you don't have time (imho there is always time but i love spending hours in record shops) then check out a website that sells records with the option of listening to sound bites see http://www.juno.co.uk it has a variety of styles and artists. If you used to buy records just check out the artists you used to buy, most are probably still making music and by doing searches for them on something like artistdirect.com you should be able to find other related artists. andrew ps this is my first post to 313 so in case anyone is interested: I'm a 24 yo male living in Adelaide, Australia (shout outs to tan,jm,nexus, cjp and royal, yeah i finally joined up =) ) I have been going to raves for about 7 years but only really concentrated on techno and house for the last 4 b4 that it was mixed with some really bad happy hardcore and early jungle :) also noticed this list has a variety of people from the uk, if anyone lives around Dunfermline, Scotland (where i was born) i'd love to here from them to find out what's going on with techno there.

Accessibility vs Intensity Classic dilemma of the internet. I'm on broadband right now too, but many people aren't, and I think it's important to try to make internet media as widely available as the particular medium (in this case streamed audio) practically allows. And I like the idea that even if I'm travelling and using a modem I can still tune in to this mix from across the world (judging by the timezone). Another way of approaching the issue might be to have a high-bandwidth and low-bandwidth feed, so that dslers, cable users and dial-ups can all utilize their connections to the utmost. But then the trade-off is that it's more work and load on the sender. As a related aside, this is the push of internet2, to streamline the internet into a tiered system divided by bandwidth access. Great if you've got it, but completely denies access if you don't because it's based on independant networks. Best of luck with the new project marsel and crew! ^_^ broadcasts will be each wednesday from: 2000-2300GMT / 2100-CET first show Wednesday, November 1st, 2000. [in] other words.. . tonight! you'll need [the] WinAMP MP3 player to listen [to] the show. The good: It's an MP3 stream (I hate RealPlayer and Winblows Media Player) The music sounded good (modulo the bad, below) The bad: 11 kHz, 16 Kbps??? :-( Blah. My cable modem wants 44 kHz, 128 Kbps. Lots of other streams give it to me. Any chance of a higher bandwidth stream in the future? :-/ We need more Net music like this. So now I'm really confused. When they list this: prescription underground recorded at waxx studios berlin rpm.199 nagual / the unknown: feel the rhythm It's Prescription 002... but it's list as a BCP project. Does that mean it's the Ron Trent and Moritz Von Oswald collaboration remix of Feel the Rhythm. I've never payed particularly close attention to this version before b/c there are sooo many versions of Feel the Rhythm scattered across the early Prescription catalogue. This is one of my favorites, but it doesn't sound too much different than the others except that it has all the vocals, and it tied together elements from all the different versions. Or was this the original? I guess this is just a testament to how similar the Prescription and BCP methods were back then. Re: comparing software synths to hardware syths
In regards to current software synths vs. previous formats, We all need to remember that comparing apples to oranges is incorrect. I happen to experience different feelings and emotions at different times depending on what I'm experiencing through my senses. To say that one is better than the other doesn't jive with me. As all types of sounds (programmed by nature or by man) evoke different feelings and emotions, every hardware synthisizer has the possibility to sound different from every software synthisizer and this is the beauty of life. In my opinion, this idea can be related to creative potential. Brooks ps- and creative potential is clearly directly related to 313 music. :) -- Ryan Heard [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I find it amusing ... all this talk about a product that's not out. It's similar to the hype that folks (myself included) have lumped on Max/MSP. I recently saw Jan Jelinek (1/2 of Farben, one-whole of Gramm) perform using not only hardware, but it appeared to be very archaic. This taught me a very valuable lesson about worshipping a false God (hardware), when this God is truly in the music. 'joker-flying-around'-track?
Hi, I saw this track on MTV a while ago during one of their megamixes on the partyzone. It was I think between a Depeche Mode remix and a Violently Happy by Bjork remix. The accompanying videoclip was something in the X-mix style and shows a joker (jester) flying through some kind of alien planet, with flowers and strange plants. It is a very melodic and funky techno track. Any ideas? It might be on one of the X-mix vids. Ken Ishii
Given the proximity of Australia and Japan you would expect Japanese DJs to come out here to play very often, but it has only been recently that those kind of exchanges have taken place - the trancier guys - like Tokyo Techno Tribe and DJ Tsuyoshi, etc - come out all the time, but not so the techno DJs. Ken Ishii made his first visit to Melbourne for the Earthcore outdoor party for last New Year's Eve and is now returning to play club dates in Sydney and Melbourne this weekend. I think it will be very cool, so maybe people can consider going to that. He plays the next installment of the Innovator party at Seven nightclub this Monday night - which is Cup Eve - in Melbourne, I am unsure of the Sydney details. He is being described as a Derrick May type DJ, so we'll see - funky, soulful and diverse! Has anyone experienced Ken's sets - what can we expect? Recloose and Common Factor are playing the same night here in Melbourne at Honytonks, so it's a case of needing a cloning machine or party-hopping, I guess! Incidentally, Ken Ishii has a new album out in Japan - it actually came out two months ago. It's called Flatspin and three of the tracks are part of the soundtrack to a new film. There is also a track called Iceblink which is a collaboration between Inner City and Ken - that is Ken did the track and the vocals are performed by Paris Grey and produced by Inner City. I don't know if anyone has heard this track yet but I should imagine it would be very interesting. The album should be released in Asia over the new few months and will get an Australian release - at this stage possibly early in the New Year. Fumiya Tanaka is another Japanese DJ who has only just made his first foray into these parts and I caught him at a small party a couple of weekends ago. Unfortunately something went wrong with the mixer just as he was about to start - I think with the monitor headphone jack breaking off in the socket, just one of those things! So that caused a delay - for some the night lost a little momentum, for others it added to the anticipation. He was very good - subtle and subliminal, as I said in an earlier post, but I was tired (it was Friday) and couldn't really focus on the whole night. I did wonder however if anyone else caught Fumiya and had any thoughts?

RE: ManuelClive + BC q.!
i got a 1996 sampler from i.t.p. records, london, called selected works which contains 2 tracks by MANUEL CLIVE. they're called bounce factor and recognised, copyrighted control (sigh!) and are nice stomping acid bounce. the later was also featured on the very first dj-kicks mix-cd by cj bolland (n/a anymore!). never heard anything else from those guys(?)... BTW, also on the i.t.p. sampler is one track called stronghold by B.C., sounds like B(asic) C(hannel) and is also on the Dave Angel Dj-kicks, but there's no word about this track on the Basic Channel webpages I know. Does somebody know who did this? thanks, stefan The scene was all changed like the change in his face...

I understand that no one on this list likes Trance. but I was just trying to get some info. Besides I love all things Electronic whether it's trance or Jungle so don't jump all over someone just because they asked about something you happen to hate. I happen to love being on this list but not when people are rude to someone who asks about something they hate or are not as informed about music as some other people may be.
Re: [313] BASTA!!! to liner notes comments
Mills is total. I was, back in the day, an English major, and spend time thinking about words, in addition to music, and I'm a fan of expressing yourself clearly and concisely. Remeber Mills was doing architecture school. While english majors may like to think about clarity of words- architects like to think about how to be as abstract and post-modern as possible. My place of employment houses an architecture library, and if you start reading some of the modern and post-modern architecture books, you'll probably think Mills' writing seems so clear and concise all of a sudden :) for real. ps. this thread is officially old. sorry for contributing to staleness..

Well, people get tense because Paul Oakenfold is not an appropriate topic for the list. His personal musical evolution does not really have anything to do with Detroit music, culture, or 313. So one would expect sarcasm especially since there are so many trance-related email lists out there, along with websites, music magazines, etc. You're flame baiting here by discussing the common anti-heroes of electronic music. I hope no one has emailed you death threats or something like that, because people on this list should have enough respect to realize there are people out there that don't live on Woodward and only own KDJ records. Those people don't embody what 313 is either. oh well. n8 --On Thursday, November 02, 2000 1:16 PM -0500 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I understand that no one on this list likes Trance. but I was just trying to get some info. A well written reply / summary I think there. As an aside, I'm curious about this notion that music is good simply because it is electronic. Is this a widely held purist view? the trick is to review the archives and obtain a good grasp of what this list is about. the 313 list needs to be centered in some way close to its original objective- the discussion of *Detroit* electronic music. of course, we all knew that anyways :) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I understand that no one on this list likes Trance. but I was just trying to get some info. Jeff Mills TP on Thanksgiving Weekend - THE REAL STORY!
Greetings cats! I am taking time out of my busy schedule to write this e-mail because of a flyer which I received last night. This flyer is for the HOUSE EXPLOSION 2000 party scheduled to take place here in Detroit on Saturday, November 25th at the Majestic Theater. The flyer IMPLIES / INFERS that Delano Smith, Jeff Mills, and myself (TP) will be spinning this event along with the other scheduled DJs. The flyer reads as follows: House Explosion 2000 with sounds by house legends Rick The Godson Wilhite, Theo Parrish, Steve Crawford, Norm Talley, Keith Worthy, Al Ester . . . . PLUS SPECIAL INVITED GUESTS: Delano Smith, Jeff Mills, and Terrance Parker. Now beyond the obvious misspelling of my name, there is a much deeper attempt to deceive you good people with this flyer which is based upon an old school Detroit promotional trick which cats would use back when I was in high school in the 1980s. The promoter knows that just by putting our names on the flyer, that the word of mouth network here in Detroit will spread the word that we are all definitely spinning at this party. With all due and proper respect to my friends Rick, Theo, Norm, Keith, Al, Delano, and Jeff, I want to assure you that I, TERRENCE PARKER am NOT spinning at this event. I was asked to spin at this event while in the middle of my set at the beatdownsounds.com party two weeks ago. At that time, I told the promoter that I do NOT discuss business at clubs/parties, and that he should get with me AFTER I have finished my set so we could discuss a time when we could talk about his request. This cat tried to continue the conversation, even though I was CLEARLY in the act of performing my DJ set. Finally, I told this cat to leave the DJ booth. I never heard back from him, or heard anything else about this party until I received this flyer last night with my name on it. Furthermore, knowing JEFF as I do, I am sure he has NOTHING to do with this event. Jeff probably knows nothing about it. I also know that Jeff has specific feelings with regard to how his DJ bookings are handled (especially as they relate to events here in Detroit). I'm sure many of you on the 313 list, and cats here in Detroit remember the last big Jeff Mills controversy surrounding a Thanksgiving party here in Detroit (which was not Jeff's fault). So I have forwarded a copy of this e-mail to Jeff and his management. My guess is that Delano also did not commit to this event. Thus Delano, Jeff, and myself conveniently become know as special invited guest according to the flyer. Now maybe I'm wrong! Perhaps Jeff Delano are going to spin at this event. But knowing how the promoter approached me, and Steve Crawford, I seriously doubt it. I just want to make it clear that I AM NOT SPINNING AT THIS EVENT. I HAVE THE HIGHEST RESPECT FOR Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish, Steve Crawford, Norm Talley, Keith Worthy, Al Ester, Delano Smith, AND Jeff Mills. I SUPPORT THEM! I DO NOT SUPPORT, NOR WILL I ENDORSE THIS EVENT IN ANYWAY. These cats had no authorization to use my name in ANY MANNER in connection with their event. ON THAT SAME NOTE, the Trancended cats behind the Won't You Be My Neighbor party on DEC 8 2000 in Detroit, have also used my name without my authorization. Their E-Flyer courtesy of the ravedata.com site reads as follows: With performances by Craig Gonzalez, Terrence Parker, Derek Plaisako, CDX, Whistleboi, Saul Good, Legal Alien, Interzone, Tom Linder, Big Loda Again, with all due respect to T.Linder, Derek, CDX and the other DJs involved with this event, I want to make it clear that I am NOT spinning at this event. These cats had no authorization to use my name in ANY MANNER in connection with their event. This matter regarding both the November 25th and December 8th events is now in the hands of my legal team. Any further attempts to misappropriate my name and/or likeness will not be tolerated. peace respect, TP www.TerrenceParker.com 1.248.784.7233

Nathan DeYonker [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You're flame baiting here by discussing the common anti-heroes of electronic music. I hope no one has emailed you death threats or something like that, because people on this list should have enough respect to realize there are people out there that don't live on Woodward and only own KDJ records. Those people don't embody what 313 is either. oh well. n8 I think the list is about being open-minded but the discussion needs to deal with Detroit and Detroit-influenced (the global impact of Detroit) music. And being open-minded I don't own just all Axis recordings. I'm interested in all aspects of the music and the artists who put their soul into the work and keep that feeling real, so it would be nice if 313 stayed away from the Oakie talk but also kept a broad base. more 2 cents, thanks for reading. Re: [313] Paul Oakenfold
one thing that may tie oakie to 313, albeit a long stretch, is that Oakie was pretty a founder of the Manchester acid houseparty scene (not THE founder, but an important player) which was using music that generally was coming from the midwest here... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.mp3.com/stations/clevelandunderground http://www.mp3.com/darw_n http://www.sphereproductions.com/topic/Darwin.html http://www.mannequinodd.com - Original Message - From: laura gavoor [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, November 02, 2000 12:18 PM Subject: Re: [313] Paul Oakenfold Don't get us wrong... Oakenfold is truly a good DJ at what he does, but understand that Trance is Eurocized and considerably watered down Techno which 313 birthed so passionately and overly-clever, mainly British AR folks have been banking considerably off of for nearly a decade. It is a classic case of Imitators getting the glory and getting paid for cheesing up what historically Black American musical Innovators have produced and done okay financially with. Oakey's people have hyped him to a level that commands big revenues, but I'll take ANY 313 artist/deejay over him any day of the week, trance just ain't got enough soul to satisfy most 313ers. Ain't no booty in that trance... Longevity is the key to this music marketing game and the most hyped artists usually come crashing down the hardest. deep chord cd
hello, anyone have any info on the deep chord guys apart from the www.deepchord.com site? their releases are excellent. Here's a hint: Put up your right hand and stare at the thumb. not really, there are detroit based people as well, but I promised to keep my mouth shut. Speaking of, they've got a new CD out now. limited edition too, only 1,000 pressed. Is it a compilation of all of their releases so far, or are there any exclusive tracks. Deepchord's discography is interesting in that the first 6 releases on the label were dub plates. This CD is a collection of the first 6 Deepchord records. From what I understand these tracks are not going to be pressed to vinyl, so they are only available on the CD. If you would like to hear the tracks, they are available on the website. I'll be picking that up since I've missed the boat on this label but have been forced to ass shake any time someone drops it. Call down to recordtime roseville, there might still be a few copies hanging around, 7,8, and 9 are the only ones available on vinyl. Definitely a label worth checking out, I like their stuff better than most Chain Reaction. shake it fass, mt NP : Sutekh : Periods.Make.Sense I can't wait for tonight! - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] Paul Oakenfold
CForsman Check out Derrick May or Stacey Pullen when they play in Detroit - people in this part of the world talk about their sets for days, years, after and they are fabulous. Go and support Juan Atkins for some real grooves. I bet their are others I/we haven't seen too. Oakenfold is in Australia this weekend with Chicane, not Grand Rapids, and we are trying to escape him by going to Ishii and/or Recloose/Common Factor, running away to the desert, forest, etc. Cheers C From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Paul Oakenfold Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 13:16:06 -0500 I understand that no one on this list likes Trance. but I was just trying to get some info. Re: [313] Ken Ishii
Hello- He is being described as a Derrick May type DJ, so we'll see - funky, soulful and diverse! Has anyone experienced Ken's sets - what can we expect? I was lucky enough to catch Ken Ishii here in Chicago a few weeks back and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't know exactly what to expect, as I heard he plays a lot of stuff out of leftfield which doesn't necessarily keep a dancefloor going. But, this was not the case. He started off very housey, perhaps following where the opening DJ left off. Then, he moved into what I can only describe as 'experimental funk.' I wish I could describe it better, but nonetheless, it was very nice. His last hour consisted of funky techno with some Detroit here and there (Mills' Jaguar mix, Stings of Life, Clinically Inclined). Although, I did picture him being a bit taller ;-) All and all, a very good night. I can't wait until he comes to town again. He seems to visit Chicago on a semi-regular basis, as do most DJs. I would highly recommend checking him out. Cheers, John
