Re: [AI] query from thahir
I am forced to share something very similar that happened to me. I started to smoke as early as when I was 14, long before I realised RP would cause blindness to me. However, smoking wasn't something I could immediately get rid of and I found it to be the best way to bond with everyone especially with those of my age group who are quite fine with it. But I started to realise people -especially those who unnecessarily placed me on a higher pedestal thanks to my blindness- did judge me on the basis of that one habit. Those who spoke with me well refused to say hello after seeing me smoke. Ironically, a large number of them are smokers themselves (so much for Indian culture). So, may I construe your stand in this matter of superiority of Indian culture over western to imply that such omissions are justified? So curious!!! And Shadab you have also wrote: But the one thing I am certain of is that pornography, from the standpoint of psychology, is wrong - not to talk about need. Haven't you studied it in your course? So, Psychology is far from a precise natural science as you seem to imply by demanding a clear statement about pornography being wrong. Pornography may be harmful in some instances as it may encourage irresponsible or nonconsensual sex, but more often than not, it serves as bulwark against such activities by permitting a momentary ventilation to temporary passions without taking them out on unwilling and often unknowing persons. Hardly few rapists are active readers of pornography. And I still am at a loss to comprehend as to why the visual inability of a person should deprive him/her of all aspects of life. It is tantamount to saying, as many people say, that the blind should only recite bhajans and not romantic songs or even the sad songs for that matter. Hence, If the moderator, without determining the questions of culture/morals or blindness being a compulsion to be good/harmless, decides that the focus of this list does not permit giving out sites dealing with accessible pornographic material, then let it be so, but please do not harp on superiority of Indian or any other culture, or moral values of sexual forbearance, or blind being under an obligation to be saintly or asexual for that matter. I vividly remember an instance in my school life when four of my schoolmates were involved in fornication (termed forced sex) later, a question was raised in Maharashtra legislative assembly, as to how these foursome got into a theater and then into a lodge despite their blindness and committed the act??? Though remorseful about the event, we nonetheless regarded it as step towards integration and were more outraged at the stupid MLAs who truly reflected constricted mindset of society at large. And for those who are interested, the site http://the-clitoris.com is a beautiful and accessible site on feminine sexuality, and not clearly pornographic as it seems to be defined here. Re: [AI] Wayfinder Access
Hi Ketan, Could you give some examples of important points that are not marked in Mumbai? The maps are standard and the pricing has nothing to do with the quality of the maps that are used. You can indeed register and use mywayfinder.com. You need to set a password from your phone and then login. Services like yellow pages are indeed not available in India but that has nothing to do with the price that you have paid for the product. This is a Wayfinder issue. The local distributer of Wayfinder Navigator which is the mainstream product is mapmyindia who you can visit at http://www.mapmyindia.com. They may be able to help with map quality issues. Also, do remember that areas are known by their proper names on the maps. There are places in Delhi that are known by their common names. These days though I can see a few common names crop up on to the maps. I assume that the same will be true for Mumbai. Pranav On 3/17/09, Ketan Kothari muktake...@gmail.com wrote: Hi friends, I have just installed the licensed version of wayfinder access and realized that many of the important POI's are not mapped in Mumbai. Besides, quite a few of the services are not available in India such as white and yellow pages, public transport etc. I can understand that since we are offered special price this may have happened but would volume not work in our favour? I mean that if some of these services were to be introduced and the maps were to be updated periodically would it not happen that more of us would go for it? I give credit to Saksham for negotiating the special price and would request them to look into it. Also, there is no support for Indian users. We are not even registering at mywayfinder.com. I would appreciate comments from fellow wayfinder users. I do admit that I have started loving the product but it is like I have a little but would be happy with a little more. [AI] Mobile Speak Smartphone Pocket V2.1
Mobile Speak Smartphone Pocket V2.1 Code Factory Releases V2.1 of Mobile Speak Smartphone and Mobile Speak Pocket Support for more than 15 new devices, full support for Windows Mobile 6.1, support for the new Bookshare format and many more new features. Terrassa (Barcelona), Spain, February 18, 2009 In the last few years the number of users of Code Factory's screen readers for Windows Mobile devices has been skyrocketing. Code Factory is currently the only company developing screen readers for more than one mobile operating system: Symbian, Windows Mobile and Blackberry from RIM. Mobile Speak Smartphone and Mobile Speak Pocket are the two versions of Code Factory's screen reader available for Windows Mobile devices. One of the great features unique to Mobile Speak Smartphone and Mobile Speak Pocket is the User Centered Licensing System released more than a year ago, which allows users to deactivate their license from a device and reactivate it in a new supported device without any additional cost. This new licensing system has encouraged our customers to frequently switch from one device to another; that is why our development team has worked very hard to support more than 15 new smartphones and Pocket PCs. The other big competitive advantage of choosing a Windows Mobile Code Factory screen reader is the opportunity to experience traveling and walking around with Mobile Geo, Code Factory's award-winning GPS application. V2.1 of Mobile Speak Smartphone and Mobile Speak Pocket will be compatible with V1.5 of Mobile Geo, planed to be released by March 2009. NEW DEVICES supported by V2.1 Version 2.1.205 of Mobile Speak Smartphone supports five new smartphones: * Samsung SGH-i200, * Palm Treo 500, * Palm Treo 500V from Vodafone, * HTC S640 and * HTC S740. Version 2.1.205 of Mobile Speak Pocket supports eleven new Pocket PCs: * ATT Samsung Epix, * HP iPAQ 910 (Business Messenger), * Samsung SCH-i760 from Verizon Wireless, * HP iPAQ 600 Business Navigator, * Sprint HTC Touch Pro, * ATT HTC Fuze, * Verizon xv6850 Touch Pro, * Sprint HTC Touch Diamond, * Palm Treo 800W from Sprint, * Palm Treo Pro, and * Asus P750. HIGHLIGHTED FEATURES of V2.1 Both Mobile Speak Smartphone and Mobile Speak Pocket V2.1.205 include: * Full support for Windows Mobile 6.1. * Improvements to Code Factory's built-in Braille reader application, also called BRF reader: * Support for the new Bookshare format. To learn more about the new Bookshare library visit http://www.benetech.org/about/press_releases/PR_2009-01-26_Bookshare.shtml * Added a Find function that lets you enter a search string using computer Braille or literary (grade 1 or 2) Braille. * New options for adding bookmarks and jumping to a selected bookmark. * With Mobile Speak Pocket, pressing DoubleTap4 in a BRF file will now close it. * In Mobile Speak Smartphone as well as Mobile Speak Pocket, you can access the Braille Reader through a dedicated icon located in the Mobile Speak control panel. * To learn more about the BRF Reader visit http://www.codefactory.es/en/products.asp?id=241 * New upgrade installation process This new upgrade installation process allows the user to install a new build (or reinstall the same one that is already on the device), without first uninstalling Mobile Speak and its components if they are already running on the device. There is no need to stop Mobile Speak/Magnifier to do this. * Enhanced support for Office OneNote You can install Office OneNote on your device if you connect it to a computer with Microsoft Office 2007. Just launch OneNote 2007 on your PC when the device is already connected via ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center, and you will be prompted to install OneNote Mobile. Mobile Speak Pocket and Mobile Speak Smarpthone now read the list of saved OneNote files, read all menu and toolbar option names rather than the bitmap number for some, and inform you if there is a sound clip inserted in the note. V2.1.205 also features new settings and commands for both Mobile Speak Smartphone and Mobile Speak Pocket * New settings and commands for Mobile Speak Smartphone * Two new commands for the Default command layout: Home+4 will open the Start menu wherever you are. Home+Long4 will return focus to the Today screen. * The user dictionary has been redesigned. It can be opened by pressing Home+4 in the Settings command layout. It is now possible to navigate the list of pronunciation entries using the Left/Right arrow keys; pressing the left softkey will now close this dialog and automatically save your new entries and changes to existing ones; and the right softkey will now open the menu of options, including Cancel which will let you exit the user dictionary without saving any entries or modifications. *

So now, it is a fact that what so ever I try but I will never take the initiative to open the site everyday and then read. So, I am looking for any such service which can send me my desired newspaper on email. Can someone tell me is it possible and how? Do the newspapers itself provide such service or we will have to rely on some other blog sort of things? Accessindians, till today I was never interested in news papers. But now time demands that you read newspapers otherwise your knowledge will be very poor. Re: [AI] Can you think for a while please:
Dear Suryanarayana, You are absolutely right. Elections come and go but our problems should remain same forever. As per 2001 census 2.21 crore persons around two percentage of Indian population is with various disabilities. In 2004 general elections no political party has touched the problems of the differently abled. Even till today no political party included the problems of the differently abled in to the election manifestoes of coming Loksabha elections. India claims it is a welfare state. But what about the welfare of the physically challenged? Is there any political party ready to cater needs of physically challenged? How long shall we wait for the mercy of the political leaders? Our political participation is totally neglected. In 2004 Supreme court of India issued guide lines for arranging ramps and Braille E V M s for the voting of persons with disabilities which were not properly implemented even in recent Assembly elections. As per our population of 2001 two percentage seats I.E. 11 seats should be allotted to the persons with disabilities. Is there any political party ready to offer two percentage of seats to the Physically challenged persons? Is it not our political right to claim proportionate political representation? If political participation is not provided, who will plead our rights and problems in the Parliament? It is the right time to educate and express our demands before the political parties. All NGOs should together play active role in including the demands of the differently abled in to the election manifestoes of every political party. With kind regards, G. [AI] Fw: [VV] Discovery of new gene that causes Leber congenital amaurosisand retinitis pigmentosa
- Original Message - From: Ali To: Undisclosed-Recipient:; Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2009 12:31 PM Subject: [VV] Discovery of new gene that causes Leber congenital amaurosisand retinitis pigmentosa Published: Thursday, 5-Mar-2009 Medical Research News The team of Dr. Robert Koenekoop which includes Dr. Irma Lopez from the Research Institute of the MUHC at the Montreal Children's Hospital played a crucial role in the international collaboration that led to the discovery of a new gene that causes Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP), two devastating forms of childhood blindness. This finding of this new gene, called SPATA7, is remarkable because it identifies a new retinal metabolic disease pathway that may be crucial for many patients. It also opens a new avenue for a potential genetic therapy. Gene therapy targeting different genes has recently proved successful for the same disease in human subjects. The study will be published on March 5th, 2009 in the American Journal of Human Genetics . New cell mechanism at play Researchers have now identified a total of fifteen genes involved in LCA, but SPATA7 is the first gene with a mutation that disrupts the protein transport between two important compartments of the cell: the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. All proteins in every cell have to pass through this transport pathway; thus SPATA7 plays a major role and its mutation may affect many aspects of vision. Until now we were not aware that this cellular mechanism played a role in LCA or any other eye disease. This is a very important step that opens up a number of new research avenues, particularly in our understanding of the specific cellular processes involved in blindness. This finding also increases the number of potential therapeutic targets and therefore the chances of finding a treatment. We are extremely motivated by all of these new possibilities, explained Dr. Koenekoop. First step towards gene therapy This is an incredible discovery that gives great hope to LCA patients and their families, that gene based therapies can and will be developed to restore sight, said Sharon Colle, President and CEO of The Foundation Fighting Blindness, the leading private charity for vision research. We are proud to fund such important discoveries involving prominent Canadian researchers and institutions. A careful assessment of patients with some specific genetic types of LCA also demonstrated that their retinal cells (specifically the rod and cone photoreceptors), although not functional for vision, were still present and in relatively good condition. This critical observation will allow researchers to continue on the path towards gene therapies. Therapies targeting different genes for the same disease have already shown success in the United Kingdom and in the US, meaning that LCA patients can now enjoy hope for the future. A new and innovative technology SPATA7 was identified using an innovative technology developed in the different laboratories involved in this international collaboration. We started this protocol about two years ago, and it has already helped us to identify four new genes associated with LCA and RP before we discovered SPATA7, explained Dr Koenekoop. The technique is based on DNA-chips and involves three steps: first the genetic material of the patient is screened to find mutations in 14 specific LCA and RP genes. The LCA and RP patients that are negative for this detailed screen are then subjected to a second DNA chip, this one to identify significant stretches of homozygosity in SNP markers. SNPs are single nucleotide repeats, which are natural variations in the human genome. These homozygous regions may contain new genes and are carefully probed based on functional information and then subjected to sequencing. This method is indeed both very powerful and very promising for the future, said Dr. Koenekoop. ___ Voicevision mailing list voicevis...@blindinfo.org http://mail.blindinfo.org/mailman/listinfo/voicevision_blindinfo.org To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] removing the back ground noice
Hello, Go to Effects menu, Dynamics submenu. Under it are two options, Graphic and Multi-band. Either of them will activate a dialogue box with several presets in a combo box. Select one and check it using the preview option. Press alt+p to invoke the sound preview and esc to close the preview. If you are satisfied, activate the ok button and let sound forge do the rest in a few seconds depending upon the size of the file. I find gold wave feature of clipboard nois trim very handy. Though it is not free, the demo allows you 150 keystrokes in a single session. It is enough for ordinary user. First copy to clipboard a sample sound you want to eliminate. Then go to Effects menu, Filter submenu, Noise reduction dialogue box. The first control here is a combo box of presets. Arrow down to Clipboard noise print. Tab over to the Preview button and activate it. If it sounds good, tab over to the Stop button. Now activate the Ok button and allow GoldWave some time to complete the process. All dialogue boxes in GoldWave are almost the same, a combo box of presets, some controls for adding or removing presets, a preview and a stop button and so on. Best regards, Amiyo Biswas. Re: [AI] Wayfinder Access
Pranav, Thank you for replying. At times we are getting directions of turning onto right where it is obvious that we have to turn left. Also, Would we have any advantage of registering on wayfinder? And, How often do the maps get updated? Who would start the services such as white and yellow pages as these would be very important for us. As for POI's I have not found some wellknown restaurants in my area on the map. Also, places which are off the main road are not available such as NAB Headquarters whereas there office in Ambernath 40 km from head office is available. Re: [AI] Can you think for a while please:
Dear Sir, Good morning. thanks for your email. Please don't call me sir! All the regional parties are eyeing to have their share in the centre. Haven't they created the Third Front also? So how about convening a mass meeting in Delhi of all the physically challenged? Lobbying the regional parties is undeniably necessary and folks should do work for this in their respective states. But, in my humble view, since all the politicians are knitted together, so holding a single meeting will fulfil that need in a better and easier manner. What do you think? Re: [AI] This time Banking!
Dear Kanchan Ma'am, I went to the bank and also met the manager. While asking the reason of rejection, they said that they can not give any reason at the moment, it may be because of my mistake. I conveyed the same to the manager and he replied to be very frank, banks never take the responsibility on their own sholders. You can resubmit the application form and may be this time your ATM will come. I also applied for E-banking and they told me to waite for 15 to 20 days to get the password and other information. Thanks. Greetings AI list members! I am having my account with Bank of Baroda and I had applied for ATM two month ago. In starting they not ready to allow me such facilities but after showing them RBI's circular and IBA's guidelines, they agreed. On last Saturday, I visited my branch to confirm about my ATM and came to know that my application was rejected. When I asked the reason they denied saying right now we can not give you the reason but you can resubmit your application. However, I filled up the application form and submitted it again but the thing is: I will again have to wait for another one or two months and on that this might be repeated again. Any advise?
