Re: [AI] Checking of Proof of Disability in the handicap compartment on the Western Line
The following news appearing in today's newspaper tells altogether a different story. Read on.. Mumbai: Number of unauthorised travellers in coaches for the disabled up by 18% Monday, Dec 23, 2013, 10:46 IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA Dayanand Kamath Despite stern action by the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the number of unauthorised persons travelling in coaches specially reserved for the handicapped on Mumbai suburban (Central and Western) railways has gone up by 18 per cent in 2013 as compared to 2012. The figures provided by the RPF showed that in 2013, they have arrested 43,349 people for traveling in disabled coaches and had collected a total fine of Rs1.62 crore from the offenders. In 2012, the RPF had booked 36,798 people and the railway court had recovered a total fine of Rs91 lakh from them. This means, the RPF have arrested 6551 more offenders in the current year as compared to the previous year. At the same time, the court sent 160 offenders to jail in 2013 for not paying the fine whereas in 2012, as many as 130 offenders were sent to jail. Jeetendra Karelia, president of Advocacy Group of India, said, To curb this menace, the Railway Board should increase the fine amount from Rs500 to Rs2000. Karelia said that he had written to the Railway Board and both the general managers of CR and WR in June 2013 with a request to hike the fine amount. Karelia also observed that many personnel of Mumbai police in mufti travel in coaches reserved for the disabled and bully those handicapped commuters, who object to their presence. The RPF must take stern action against these cops who illegally travel in coaches meant for handicapped commuters, he demanded. The activist also said that often women, who are only one or two months pregnant, travel in the coaches for disabled with their husband or relative for their comfort. He said a pregnant womn must carry a certificate from a government hospital, showing that her she pregnancy is in the advance stage. The railway authority should check such certificates, he added. Rajendra Rupnavar, senior divisional security commissioner, RPF, WR, said, We have been conducting drives against unauthorised persons traveling in coaches reserved for the disabled. He added that their aim was to educate and create awareness among the physically fit commuters. While travelling on a partially crowded handicap coach from Malad to Vile Parle around half past noon yesterday, I noticed a TC step into the compartment at Andheri. He sounded like a man of authority and spoke in fluent English and Hindi. He loudly announced that non-handicap commuters would have to immediately get off the train at the next station. While pacing around, he began to ask some commuters to produce their Disability Certificate. He took to task a man who was accompanying an orthopeadically handicap passenger and said that the man ought to be travelling in the general compartment while only his physically challenged friend would be allowed to board this coach. When Vile Parle approached, the TC got off the train with the escort of the physically challenged man and two other women whom he had asked for proof of disability. I saw him stand at one corner of a tea stall talking with them as I proceeded to search my way. This may have come as an after effect of all the effort put into writing to and following up with Railway Authorities. However, it sure seems like the beginning of a break through with Indian Railway. [AI] Fw: Biometrics researchers see world without passwords (Update)
Subject: [GDG] Biometrics researchers see world without passwords (Update) Nov 12, 2013 Some Purdue University researchers are working on technology that could see all those passwords that computer users must punch in replaced with steps such as iris and fingerprint scans. The basement lab of Purdue University's International Center for Biometrics Research is where such emerging biometric technologies are tested for weaknesses before going mainstream. Iris and fingerprint scans as well as facial and voice recognition are just a few of the tools that can improve security while making lives easier, said Stephen Elliott, the center's director. That technology can allow someone to log into a computer or activate a smartphone simply by swiping their fingerprint over a sensor-and eliminate the need to frequently change passwords. I think the average person would tell you they have too many passwords and it's a hassle to change them all the time, and therefore they use the same password for lots of things, which inherently makes that easier to break, Elliott said. Biometrics is already in use at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in West Lafayette, where workers punch in by putting their finger on a fingerprint scanner attached to their cash register. Chris Smith, the restaurant's assistant manager, said passwords were sometimes shouted out among workers and that the fingerprint system improves the security of cash registers by better limiting access. And the system means one less password workers have to memorize. I'm sure that they have a hundred that they have to remember for their things at home-their online banking and whatnot, Smith said. So it's just one more ease for them that they don't have to have. Elliott said that while many people now consider such scanners something out of the movies, he believes computer passwords could someday be a thing of the past. I think once people see the things in consumer's hands-the biometrics in there-then we'll just see people try to push other deployments of biometrics, because it's easier, he said. © 2013 The Associated Press. Why did she not disclose about her disability then and choose to do so after her marriage? What was her intent behind concealing her disability ? [AI] Why Can Some Blind People Process Speech Far Faster Than Sighted Persons?
Why Can Some Blind People Process Speech Far Faster Than Sighted Persons? Functional brain imaging has revealed that some blind people's brains rewire themselves, giving them extraordinary auditory comprehension By R. Douglas Fields Image: Photo by David Benbennick, courtesy Wikimedia Commons SAN DIEGO-Books fly from the shelf as Superman fans the pages in a blur devouring the information at blinding speed. Superhuman mental powers, including his extraordinary sense of hearing and blazing speed-reading, are as vital to Superman as his bullet-beating velocity and steel-bending strength. But it seems Superman isn't the only being with the gift of quickness. Neuroscientists reported in November at the Society for Neuroscience's annual meeting in San Diego that they have found an interesting group of real individuals with such superhuman mental abilities-blind people. Moreover, functional brain imaging now reveals how they achieve their extraordinary cerebral feats. A popular notion is that blind people sharpen their remaining senses to compensate for lost vision. Blind musicians, such as Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles, may excel in music because of their highly developed sense of hearing. Researchers from the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research at the University of Tübingen in Germany have found scientific support for this belief. Blind people can easily comprehend speech that is sped up far beyond the maximum rate that sighted people can understand. When we speak rapidly we are verbalizing at about six syllables per second. That hyperactive radio announcer spewing fine print at the end of a commercial jabbers at 10 syllables per second, the absolute limit of comprehension for sighted people. Blind people, however, can comprehend speech sped up to 25 syllables per second. Human beings cannot talk this fast. The scientists had to use a computerized synthesizer to generate speech at this speed. It sounds like noise, Ingo Hertrich, one of the scientists involved in the research told me. I can't understand anything.maybe it sounds like some strange foreign language spoken very rapidly. (To hear what speech at 16 syllables per second sounds like, listen to a sample recording the scientists used in their experiments.) Hertrich and his colleagues Hermann Ackermann and Susanne Dietrich wanted to find out what was going on inside the brains of blind people that gives them this superpower to understand speech at ultrafast rates. Examining brain regions activated by blind and sighted people while they listened to ultrafast speech and laid inside a (functional magnetic imaging, or MRI) brain scanner revealed that in blind people the part of the cerebral cortex that normally responds to vision was responding to speech. No wonder blind people seem to have superhuman powers of high-speed listening comprehension. Normally, this brain region, situated at the back of the skull and called V1, only responds to light. Vision is such an important sense for humans that a huge portion of the brain is devoted to visual processing-far more gray matter than is dedicated to any other sense. In blind people all this brain power would go to waste, but somehow an unsighted person's brain rewires itself to connect auditory regions of the brain to the visual cortex. Ackermann explained that the age at which a person loses sight is likely to be critical in rewiring brain regions controlling hearing to the region that normally processes vision. In people who are born blind the visual cortex is completely unresponsive to any auditory or visual stimulation. This region of the brain becomes functionally disconnected because visual input is necessary early in life to wire up visual brain circuitry properly. Younger people who lose sight after these connections formed, however, are able to reroute them to process auditory information after becoming blind. On the other hand, people who lose sight late in life are also less able to rewire their brains, because the critical period during which visual experience can influence this process is limited to earlier years in life. (All the subjects in this study had lost their sight between two and 15 years of age.) But how do brain regions connected to the ears get rewired to brain regions that are normally connected to the eyes? The fact is that most of our senses have some interacting circuitry between them, which is called cross modality. There are some connections between the brain's auditory and visual regions, because the two senses must work together. Seeing a person's lips move helps comprehension of speech. We also need to orient our visual and auditory attention to the same events and to the same place in space, so there is an exchange of information between the auditory and visual cortices. Nerves from muscles that control our eye movements, for example, connect to the brain's hearing centers as well. These connections

Aadhaar is not compulsory, SC makes it clear comments powered by Disqus Home India Report Aadhaar is not compulsory, SC makes it clear Tuesday, Sep 24, 2013, 9:46 IST | Place: New Delhi | Agency: DNA Kanu Sarda Mayank Aggarwal Dealing a body blow to the UPA-II's ambitious Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) project, the Supreme Court on Monday said Aadhaar cards are not mandatory for availing government services such as domestic cooking gas, food subsidy, marriage certificates, salary reimbursements and other services. The SC order comes after the parliamentary standing committee on finance rejected the National Identification Authority of India Bill that would have given legal backing to the Aadhaar project. The government has been under attack for going ahead with the project without any statutory backing. UIDAI, headed by the former Infosys chief, Nandan Nilekani, has so far issued 40.29 crore Aadhaar cards. The government was targeting a number of 60 crore cards by 2014. The home ministry had also raised concerns on Aadhaar's biometric data collection and verification methods stating that they do not meet security criteria. Besides, there has been a turf war with the Home Ministry's National Population Register which too has been documenting photographs, fingerprints and iris scan of all citizens. The court's directions came after a former judge of the Karnataka High Court, KS Puttaswamy, filed a PIL alleging that the government was bypassing parliament by going ahead with the distribution of UID numbers and cards. The Supreme Court told the Centre not to make the Unique Identification Card mandatory for availing government schemes. The court said that the identification card could not be mandatory for states to provide services either. Re: [AI] Quandary of Hidden Disabilities: Conceal or Reveal?
Today, more job seekers with disabilities are entering the workforce. For persons with disabilities, finding and keeping work is usually no different than for those without disabilities. However, there may be additional things to consider, such as disclosure if, when and how to tell people about your disability. Disclosure is an important and complex decision that is entirely yours to make. What’s right for one person may not be right for another, and what works in one situation may not be successful in another. Whether you mention your disability in your cover letter or resumé, during the interview or at the time of the job offer depends on you and the situation. If you’re dealing with a service provider or agency that works specifically with persons with disabilities, you will still have some say in how much is disclosed. Disclosure is entirely your choice. Before deciding if, when and how to disclose your disability, think about the following questions: Is your disability visible? How do most people react when they learn about your disability? How do you deal with their reactions? When do you feel most comfortable and confident disclosing your disability? Does not disclosing put your safety or the safety of others at risk? Will the employer think you’re dishonest? How would you deal with that reaction? What misconceptions might the employer have about your disability? If you disclose, will you be able to reassure your employer that your disability will not affect your ability to do the work? What do you know about this employer's policies and experiences regarding people with disabilities? - Original Message - From: Shireen Irani shireen@gmail.com To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerningthe disabled. accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Sunday, September 22, 2013 8:58 PM Subject: Re: [AI] Quandary of Hidden Disabilities: Conceal or Reveal? a very serious post indeed. if i'm not mistaken this issue of whether 1 should disclose one's blindness in the cv was discussed sometime ago on the list. and many people did contribute to the discussion. still, these r issues that need to be brought up from time to time as new members keep joining the list. because i'm still a bit unsure whether its a good idea to leav it out of the cv till the interview stage. She was well qualified for the job, and as her interviews progressed through the day, she sensed that she was about to be offered the job. Enlarge This Image Julia Yellow Then the top executives invited her to continue the discussion over drinks. The bar was noisy and she couldn’t keep up with the conversation. She didn’t get the job. The woman, who asked me not to use her name, is among those whom the Americans With Disabilities Act can have a hard time protecting: people with hidden disabilities. What should she have done? During the interview process she might have disclosed her hearing loss in a way that showed how effectively and creatively she compensated for it. When the drinks suggestion was made, she might have said: “I’d prefer we met in a quiet place so I could respond more easily. Would that be O.K.?” But the woman’s choice not to disclose her disability was understandable. In fact, Joyce Bender, who owns a search firm in Pittsburgh that helps place people with disabilities, says that revealing a disability in an interview should be avoided if possible. And it should not be mentioned on a résumé, she says, as doing so may mean never reaching the interview stage. Ms. Bender herself has epilepsy, a factor in her decision to focus the work of Bender Consulting Services on people with disabilities. “People with epilepsy have been viewed as mentally insane, degenerate, demonic or intellectually diminished,” she said. “Today the stigma for people with epilepsy is that you are strange, dangerous, weird and someone to avoid.” An employee is not required to disclose a disability after being hired, but may choose to do so. Someone with epilepsy may want to ensure that the employer will know how to deal with a seizure. A diabetic might need to be away from work for insulin shots. Someone with mental illness may need a flexible schedule to allow for psychiatrist visits. A recovering alcoholic or drug abuser might need time off to meet with a substance abuse support group. But it’s a hard decision to make: If you announce your condition, you risk being stigmatized; if you keep it a secret, you risk poor performance reviews or even being fired. [AI] Are mobile phones and tablets ruining your child's development?
Are mobile phones and tablets ruining your child's development? Wednesday, Aug 7, 2013, 16:27 IST | Agency: health.india.com Gayatri Ayyer Today, it's not uncommon to see almost every child or young adult (and not so young ones) hooked to smartphones or tablets, completely oblivious to their surroundings. Gayatri Ayyer, a counselling psychologist analyses the effects of gadgets on children. I have lived in India, USA and Singapore and have seen people all around completely hooked to their electronic gadgets like smartphones, tablets and laptops without any awareness of their surroundings. This is the current sad picture around the world, children and adults spending more time on gadgets rather than with their friends and families. Too much info, too soon? When the internet was introduced to the public around 10 years ago, it was considered a way that the world will come closer - opening multiple opportunities for people to learn, form relationships and in general create a better connected, more informed world. Though the internet still retains its good qualities, with the increasing use of gadgets in children's lives in addition to no controls on internet usage, the net is becoming the root cause of a lot of behavioural, emotional and psychological problems in children. It has become a vehicle which allows children to download age-inappropriate games, spend a lot of time on social networking sites, even allows them access to pornography and this led them to forgoing spending on things like school work or playing outdoors. Information age to blame for rising ADHD cases? According to researchers, there has been an increase in the rate of diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. One of the causes for this is the escalation in the useage of gadgets in children shortly before bedtime, resulting in delay in time to go to sleep, and shorter sleep time. Another cause could be that since these children don't spend time outdoors, they're not being exposed to enough sunlight which can lead to various complications. Read: Understanding ADHD in children Nothing like the great outdoors! When we were kids, we spent time playing cricket outside, climbing trees or even playing with dolls with our friends. Our parents encouraged us to play outdoors rather than indoors; all this helped children develop skills like imagination, creativity, team spirit and problem solving. We became better at social adjustment as we had to solve our own problems or learn the art of waiting patiently for results. Watching TV was only on Sundays, when we watched He-Man, Ramayana, Mahabharata, etc. together as a family. Nowadays, when we suggest children play outdoors they give us blank incomprehensible looks! Hooked to gadgets If you look around you, you can see children as young as 6 months old, demand their parents' mobile phones, TV or tabs to be entertained during mealtimes or when the parents or caretakers are busy. This leads to a dependency on these electronic devices rather than playing with toys and games creating a deficit in their creativity, imagination and problem solving skills. Parents find it easy to give in to their children's demands for electronic devices rather than using affirmative discipline, indirectly encouraging inappropriate behaviours in their children. No connection with the physical world Recently, on a counselling discussion group I read that a child, who came into the play room, looked around and asked the counsellor where she kept the iPad or tab or if she had an android phone the child could play with. When the counsellor replied that the child could choose to play with any of the play materials (paints, play dough, dolls house etc.), the child looked confused. On talking with the child, she realized that the child had never played with paints or dough and had spent time playing only on these electronic devices. I have had similar experiences with my young nieces and nephews who know how to operate electronic devices with an expertise that may confound adults. But these same children find it difficult to converse in social settings or make appropriate decisions in the real world. Not all devices are evil I agree that electronic devices can be extremely useful to teach children a variety of things through applications (apps) or do research using the internet, but spending time only on these restricts their physical, mental and emotional growth. Children are spending less time with their parents in family activities or even with friends playing outdoors. What happens when due to electricity cuts or battery drain the device stops working? Or the device becomes outdated? We see temper tantrums, the lack of patience in children till a substitute can be found or a blank stare when we suggest them to think about how they can amuse themselves! Our children are becoming socially inept to deal with situations as

[AI] A courier company with deff-only staff
Dhruv Lakra: Voice-free delivery By Sharmeen Hakim IndorewalaSharmeen Hakim Indorewala, Mumbai Mirror | Jun 18, 2013, 10.15 PM Meeting a deaf boy struggling to navigate the city on a BEST bus made Dhruv Lakra decide he'd launch a business model that employed the deafRELATED. Dhruv Lakra's courier firm delivers 25,000 packages every month by a deaf-only staff. You don't except pin drop silence at a courier office during peak business hours. But at Mirakle Couriers' Churchgate headquarters, the only dominating sound is that of a whirring air-conditioner. Without exchanging a single word, its 49 staffers, all deaf, successfully deliver 25,000 packages a month within the city. Dhruv Lakra, its 32-year-old founder, who holds a degree in social entrepreneurship from SAID Business School, University of Oxford, stresses the difference between the deaf community and the hearing impaired. While the latter carry a hope of medical correction, the deaf have no choice but to resign to a life of silence. And yet, he doesn't approve of the term 'disabled' for his colleagues. They are just differently abled, he says. They are great with operational work, good with directions and incredibly honest - apt for the work they currently do. After a job with financial management and advisory firm Merrill Lynch and a volunteering stint with Mumbai-based NGO DASRA, Lakra decided he'd use the best lessons from both experiences to launch a socially-conscious business idea. Mirakle Couriers was born in 2009 with just two delivery boys. It now operates out of two branches (the other is at Bandra). Remembering the incident that spun his life around, Lakra says, I was sitting in a BEST bus beside a boy who was looking restlessly out of the window. He was lost although the conductor was regularly announcing the next stop. I tried asking him what was wrong, but he didn't respond. That's when it struck me that he was deaf. I helped him through handwritten notes, but I had come face-to-face with their everyday struggle. Lakra decided he'd come up with an entrepreneurship plan that would empower others like the boy. And he sure has. Amarjeet Mistry, a confident middle-aged staffer communicates animatedly through sign language while Lakra interprets what he is saying: I was a carpenter and it was tough to make ends meet. How was I to fend for my family? Things changed after landing this job. My daughter can speak English, you know! While Mistry and his male colleagues manage delivery, the women, including Lata Upadhyay (name changed), operate the back office. Upadhyay's parents were unwilling to let her work late hours. When Lakra learnt of this, he changed their schedule. We come in early and are back home before sunset, she says. I didn't want mere labourers. The idea is to get women with a difficult past to enjoy their work. They are my responsibility, so assigning them comfortable working hours keeps me at peace too, says Lakra, who learnt sign language as part of his field research. In the absence of the spoken word, text messages have proved to be Mirakle's lifeline. It's through SMSes that the staff effectively communicates and tracks deliveries. Their professional track record has helped bring in prestigious clients like Mahindra Mahindra, Godrej Boyce, the Aditya Birla Group and Under The Mango Tree. One staffer opens his eyes wide, and flays his arms to symbolise the fancy tall buildings they deliver packages to. It's evident that Lakra's idea is a hope for the community when he tells you he receives calls from eager parents looking for a suitable boy for their deaf daughters. It takes a while for me to explain that we are only Mirakle Couriers, not Mirakle matchmakers, Lakra smiles. [AI] Now, a software to assess disability
Sunday, May 26, 2013, 7:07 IST | Agency: DNA Dhaval Kulkarni The state Information Technology (IT) department has developed a new software to assess five types of disabilities; visual, hearing, physical, mental retardation and other mental illnesses. The Software for Assessment of Disabilities, Maharashtra (SADM) provides doctors in 42 district hospitals, general hospitals and medical colleges with login details to access the system. The doctors, who are deemed eligible to issue the certification by the State, are required to enter details about the applicant based on which the percentage of disability for the patient is calculated by the system. The disability certificate will then be generated. There is no space for fraud, said an IT official. As of Friday, 10,737 people were issued disability certificates using SADM technology out of a total of 16,855 applications. Also, 1,715 rejections were meted out. So far, 74% of the assessments have been completed. An official from the IT department said, The software was developed to eliminate malpractices and to ascertain that persons suffering from disabilities could receive available benefits without problems. It will make the system transparent. Disability certificates issued by the State can be used to avail concessions and benefits in education, jobs and to apply for various government schemes made available for the disabled. The new system also links the applicants details to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) data. The Aadhaar card data process has made exceptions for fingerprinting in case an applicant without hands. The state government had also written to the Centre offering to share the software with the Government of India and other states. [AI] Mother's vision helps visually impaired siblings see
Mother's vision helps visually impaired siblings see Sunday, May 12, 2013, 5:00 IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA Imran Fazal Doughty-spirited siblings from Malad battle physical challenge and find success, thanks to mother's support. When Jyoti Goyal's son Ashish was diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa at age eight, she was concerned about how he would deal with the trauma. At age 15, her younger daughter Nidhi was diagnosed with the same illness. Both her children lost their vision completely by the time they turned 22. While neighbours, doctors and teachers perceived her children as 'disabled', Jyoti refused to see it that way. Ashish, now 33 years old, graduated in Mumbai and headed to the Wharton Business School, Pennsylvania for his masters. Today, he's the first blind trader in the world and currently works at BlueCrest Capital Management as a portfolio manager working with hedge funds in London. In 2010, he was conferred a national award for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, which was presented by former president Pratibha Patil. Ashish's sister Nidhi, 27, was the first visually challenged person to graduate in media studies from the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education. She now works as a social worker for visually impaired persons and is working on a book that is due soon. Both the youngsters commend their mother's role in the success they have achieved. Malad-based Jyoti recalls an incident when Ashish was growing up, the neighbours, who were not aware that he was losing his eyesight, taunted him for not greeting them in the building. What they didn't know was that he was unable to identify people in the corridor. Ashish was depressed while growing up because he felt he couldn't be normal like other kids, said Jyoti. She adds, One night I saw him crying. I held his hand and told him to be brave. 'I'm with you', I said. Jyoti admits that the biggest challenge was Ashish's final year commerce exam. He couldn't read a word from his book, so I read out to him for hours and asked him to memorise. He passed with a distinction, smiles Jyoti. There was also an incident when Ashish stumbled into a lady teacher in the corridor of his college and the teacher insulted him in front of his classmates. The teacher didn't know about his condition. From that day I asked him to carry a cane so others understand. I told him - you are blind but not disabled, she said. But the battle isn't over. Ashish is now looking to settle down but friends have warned Jyoti to withhold the fact that he has lost his vision. She calls it one of the saddest days of her life. I'll find a match for my son... someone who sees his potential, not his handicap, says Jyoti. Harish Kotian From: Devdas Nayak [mailto:dena1...@gmail.com] Sent: 08 May 2013 10:17 To: Kotian, H P Subject: Off Topic Mail-Come August, blood is just a phone call away May 8, 2013, 8:00 IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA Maitri Porecha Dial 102 to get bags delivered within an hour. There is no need to panic if you urgently require blood. Just dial 102. From August, citizens will be able to get blood bags delivered to them within a radius of 10 km. After successfully experimenting with the blood-on-call scheme on a pilot basis in Satara and Sindhudurg districts, the state government is set to roll out the programme to four more districts, including Mumbai, from August 1. The scheme will be rolled out in Mumbai, Parbhani, Gadchiroli and Amravati. Delivery boys on motorcycles will make trips to collect blood samples and deliver a suitable match after the call is received, all within an hour, said Dr Sanjay Jadhav, head, State Blood Transfusion Council. Every private hospital and nursing home in the state will display information and helpline number. Anyone needing blood can dial and place a request for blood. The delivery boy will come and collect patient's blood samples. After pathological testings, blood pouches of suitable match will be delivered from cold storage sites to patients admitted in a nursing home or hospital within a 10-km radius. Moreover, the patient won't have to pay more than Rs100 for acquiring a blood bag. Currently, patients end up paying two to four times the cost to get a blood bag from a private blood bank. The objective of the scheme or the 'Jeevan Amrut Seva' is to make the process of getting blood hassle-free for a patient. State health officials are in the process of mapping the city to determine the feasibility of setting up 10 cold storage centres in state-, BMC- and trust-run hospitals which will store blood bags. The cold storage box replete with blood bags will be carried by the delivery boy. The box will have a digital display which will constantly flash the temperature maintained between two and eight degrees Celsius, said Jadhav. The scheme will see an investment of up to Rs10 crore by the state government as it rolls out in the other 28 districts of Maharashtra eventually. We are, at the moment, putting in place logistics to identify and rope in private agencies which will provide us with motorbikes and driver services. The service providers will be paid Rs4 per km, added Jadhav. The scheme started in Satara district in mid-February. Close to 42 nursing homes have already endorsed it and up to 67 units of blood have been delivered on call in the past three months, informed health officials. Re: [AI] FW: Persion Technologies - Kiran Deshpande - FRAUD ALERT
It is 100% true. This Kiran is a fraud person. Read on the news that appeared in Times Of India in November 2012 Man promises marriage, cheats woman of Rs 1.24 cr Asseem Shaikh, TNN Nov 4, 2012, 04.28AM IST Deshpande of Kothrud lured at least six gullible divorcees, promised to marry them, assured their relatives of high posts in his software firm, took the women's money and then dumped them. On Friday, the law caught up with him. The Kothrud police on Friday arrested Deshpande (32) for allegedly extorting money from at least six women after promising to marry them. He was sent to police custody on Saturday till November 5. Police have also booked his father Sharad Deshpande for abetting him in the crime. The incident came to light after a 27-year-old woman registered a case against him for against him for duping her to the tune of Rs 1.24 crore between 2011 and 2012. Assistant police inspector D S Walimbe of Kothrud police station on Saturday told TOI that the victim was working as an assistant manager in a leading bank in Pune Cantonment when she met Kiran, a customer. Walimbe said that Kiran, a bachelor, fell in love with the woman. He impressed her family members who then made cheque payments of Rs 1.24 crore to him between August 2, 2011 and November 2, 2012 for expansion of his business. He also collected 105 grams of gold ornaments from her. Investigations have revealed that Kiran had allegedly duped another divorcee of Rs 16.99 lakh by using the same modus operandi. We have seized two and half tola of gold ornaments from Kiran, he stated, adding that he may have duped more women. Deputy commissioner of police (Zone I) Makarand Ranade told TOI that Deshpande won the confidence of family members of his victims with promises of high posts in his company. He had rented a shop in the Cantonment area and had completed his second year in electrical engineering from Aurangabad. After he got engaged to the women, he sold them his plans of expansion in Dubai and Singapore and gave some persons letters of appointment as directors in his company to make an impression, said inspector Shrikant Navale( crime) of Kothrud police station. They have seized two cars. Deshpande, who lived lavishly, had booked two flats in Kondhwa and opened several NRI bank accounts. The details are being collected, Navale said. The victim's family members allegedly forced him to sit in a car and demanded money from him. His family members called the control room saying that he had been kidnapped and gave the car number which was later traced to Bund Garden area, Ranade stated. A patrol team brought all of them to Kothrud police station and during interrogation it was revealed that Deshpande had cheated the women, he added. Deshpande was produced before judicial magistrate first class S S Bose. Arguing for 14 days' police custody remand, assistant public prosecutor A V Ausekar said that Deshpande's custodial interrogation was essential for recovering Rs 1.24 crore and sought time to find out if he had made investments in real estate. [AI] Downloading free? The cops are coming
Downloading free? The cops are coming Little Yadav / DNAApril 3, 9:06 ISTMumbai: The police recently warned and let off an IT professional, attached with a company in Vikhroli, for what thousands do surreptitiously every day. He was downloading movies from a torrent site on his office computer. Most internet junkies would never anticipate that downloading songs and movies from torrents can invite a policeman home. But that is beginning to happen. Soon after the incident last week, the company emailed its employees asking them to stay off torrent sites. With a rising number of complaints, mostly from owners of copyrighted songs and movies, the cyber crime cell and the newly-formed social media laboratory have been monitoring internet users with large data downloads. There have been several such complaints recently... Only a person with a copyright can be a complainant, Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner (crime), said. This is a cognisable offence under the Copyrights Act. In the Vikhroli case, too, the complainant was the copyright holder. For those who do not know, downloading from a torrent site has always been illegal. It is akin to buying pirated DVDs from a CD seller; only this is done within the safe confines of your house, Vijay Mukhi, cyber security expert, said. Not many people are aware of the fact that using a torrent site is illegal, he said. Mukhi said action can be taken against an accused under the Copyrights Act, the IPC, or the IT Act. Section 66 of the IT Act is very elaborate and covers several offences of similar nature... It is not only your office machine that is under the scanner, but also your personal computer. Asked how exactly the Mumbai police would keep track of who is downloading what from the internet, Roy said: We have a team of cyber experts and we have started a social media lab. We track trends and with the help of the internet service providers, we conduct random checks on the content that is being downloaded from certain sites. You could have checked the status online already but of no use when your status says Aadhaar card has been generated and sent but you not receiving it yet. Following steps shows how you can get it and keep it for your records even when you have already got it’s physical copy. 1). Make sure that you have your enrollment number and the date and time of enrollment with you in order to proceed for downloading the e-Aadhaar Card. These details can be found on the acknowledgement slip which you got from the enrollment center after enrolling for Aadhaar. 2). Go to the link https://portal.uidai.gov.in/ResidentPortal/welcomeLink and click 'e-aadhaar' 3). Fill in your details like enrollment number, date and time of enrollment, your name, your Pincode and the captcha code in the respective fields and click on the ‘Submit’ button. 4). Then you will be asked to verify your mobile number by displaying the last 4 digits of your registered mobile number. If it is correct then press ‘Yes’ button and then you will receive a One Time Password (OTP) on the same mobile number as a part of verification process. If the displayed mobile number is wrong then press ‘No’ and enter your correct mobile number and press ‘Submit’ button. You will then receive OTP on your mobile number. 5). The OTP will be needed to proceed further and you have to enter the OTP in the next field to get access to the electronic version of your Aadhaar letter or Aadhar card. 6). After that you will be provided with a link to download your e-Aadhaar letter (in PDF format) and to open it you need to enter your ‘Pincode’ as the password. [AI] 3 Idiots, a smart boy, hope for disabled
3 Idiots, a smart boy, hope for disabled Published: Monday, Dec 17, 2012, 2:52 IST By Santosh Andhale | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA While Aamir Khan bowled over the audience with his performance in 3 Idiots, a teenager from Nasik drew inspiration from the actor's character, scientist Fungsuk Wangdu, in the movie. Rishab Mishra, 16, has developed the Wangdu chair which helps senior citizens, the physically challenged and those with paralysis with mobility. The most salient feature of Rishab's innovation is that a patient with paralysis can move the chair with the help of his/her tongue. For this, a force-resistive sensor - a small chip - is installed in the pallet. The chip is adjustable and can be removed while eating. Another feature is that whenever there is a power cut, the chair's lights get switched on automatically. The reverse happens when power returns, said Rishab, a standard X student of Fravashi Academy in Nasik. The Wangdu chair was among 31 projects displayed at the 25th Western India Science Fair at the Nehru Science Centre which saw the participation of people from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan. The chair was very popular among students who came to the fair, said Ashok Jethe, co-ordinator of the fair which ended on Sunday. Rishab told DNA that the chair works on the principle of electromagnetics and infrared (IR) sensors. I was working on the project for a year. This chair works with the help of IR and sound sensors. Whenever sound pressure falls on the sensors, it detects the sound and converts it into electrical energy. The message then goes to the 'brain' of the chair, the budding scientist said. Wangdu chair works with the help of DC motors which work on the principle of Lorentz force (electromagnetics). It is a fully programmed chair. The teenager is already in demand because of his innovation. We received an email from the NCERT informing that Rishabh has qualified for the Indian National Congress exhibition to be held in Kolkata from January4-6, 2013, said Mamta Mishra, Rishab's mother. [AI] A childhood with blind parents | Life and style | The Guardian
The Guardian, Tuesday 1 August 2006 Mine was a pretty ordinary childhood. But not everyone saw it that way. One word sums up people's response to the news that my parents are totally blind: incredulity. Incredulity that they could cook, get around, perform the general tasks of everyday life - let alone raise three children, including twins, while holding down successful professional careers. My father Fred and mother Etta were both born, fully sighted, in Glasgow in 1937, but lost their sight during childhood. Etta was six when it happened; Fred, 14. My mum was involved in a traffic accident; my dad, I was told from a very young age, got a germ in his eye. (It was actually a condition called double detached retina.) They met at the Royal Blind School, Edinburgh, at the age of 15, married at 26 and had three children, all fully sighted, 15 months apart: Gavin in 1966, then, in 1967, my twin brother Leslie and me. They did not meet overt hostility when they decided to have children. They were not told by a maternity doctor, as one of their blind friends was, that You shouldn't be having children. All the same, it was a rare thing that they did, and as I approach 40, with two small children of my own, I've begun to revisit my early years, and wonder how on earth my parents coped with three small ones born so close together. I was aware of people judging me and people waiting for me to fail, says Etta. But my mother had 10 of us and she had loads of energy, and I think I inherited that. My father has a slightly different take on it: Every blind person in any walk of life, if they've got any kind of desire to succeed, has to work 50% harder. As a schoolchild, I was always asked what it was like to have parents who were blind. I had a stock response: My parents are just the same as yours. They weren't, of course, but as far as I could see, my life was pretty much the same as that of my friends, except that we had a few more strange gadgets: the bleepers that let you know you when a mug was full and when a light was on, and one that told you when it was raining so you could bring the washing in; the weird contraption for writing Braille and, later on, a talking microwave. (To this day, I give a very wide berth to the talking scales that announce the user's weight to the entire household.) I did have one major gripe, though: I would have loved us to have had a car. No school run for me. We always caught the bus, cycled or walked. We lived in a handsome, four-storey Victorian house in Kenilworth, a small, affluent town in Warwickshire. My friends assumed that we children must have had lots of chores to do: Who does the cleaning? How does your mother turn the cooker on? But aside from the occasional shopping and washing-up duties and lawn-mowing (which I was paid for), we did little around the house except mess it up. My mother had weekly hired help with the cleaning, but she still spent all day Friday in a whirlwind of scrubbing and polishing. The stair carpet would be swept at the edges before vacuuming; the entire basement floor would be scrubbed on hands and knees. Windows would be cleaned, lightbulbs changed - Mum thought nothing of skipping up a stepladder. There was the occasional painless task: sometimes, on a Sunday night, a basket would be presented to me full of socks waiting to be paired up. And there was one almost daily chore that I hated, as it tended to clash with Grange Hill: tatty inspection. My mum peeled the potatoes herself, but would worry that rogue bad bits would escape her probing fingers, and ask one of us children to check them over for her. My mum cooked every night. I went for a session of 12 cookery lessons for blind people in Glasgow just before I got married, she says. It included making pastry, cakes, scones, savoury flans, and fish and chips in the oven, which was safer. In our house, there were Braille markings on the cooker knobs to indicate the temperature, and the timer also had Braille on it, but beyond that, the job was done with easy precision. You knew how long a dish would take, so you would just prod it with a fork to check it was done, Etta says. She was an adventurous cook, always on the lookout for new meals in her Braille magazine to impress her dinner-party guests with. My dad could cook too, and I really looked forward to his fat chips when Mum was away. Every few years my mother did go away. She would leave for three weeks and return, fully trained up, with a canine addition to the family, a new guide dog. Misty, Candy, Beauty, Roma, Katy, Sheena, Promise, Innis, Wendy, Ralph, Raffles, Rona - guide dogs were a constant presence during my youth, as both my mother and father had them. We all formed close bonds with these dogs and it was always very sad when one had to retire. For years I harboured an ambition to be a guide-dog trainer when I grew up. People go weak at the knees when they see a guide

Re: [AI] Can reliability in formatting independently increased?
Hi, You can do a find and replace (Ctrl+H). When the popup window opens, then click the More button. Place your cursor in the Find What text field and then click the Special button. Clicking the Special button allows you to select paragraphs marks, white space, line breaks, etc... You may have to experiment to see which of the special characters you need. Leave the Replace with text field empty, and then click Replace or Replace All Before doing this, save a backup of your document. - Original Message - From: siddhi desai siddhi.desa...@gmail.com To: accessindia accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, June 18, 2012 10:48 PM Subject: [AI] Can reliability in formatting independently increased? Hi, TRAI guidelines are applicable for telemarketing sms/calls only. If you send sms , say to your friend, who has full DND activation, it does not amount to violation of TRAI guidelines. It seems you are sending bulk sms for tele marketing purposes and some of your messages are reaching the DND activated numbers. Re: [AI] About updating your status in your profile in facebook.
Hi, You can update status through SMS as well. Here is the process to start using mobile text SMS for facebook status update and many more things. 1. Go to http://www.facebook.com/mobile/ and click on Facebook Mobile Text 2. Select Country as India and service provider name 3. If you are a Airtel user then select Airtel from the list or select other service carrier 4. Depending on your mobile service provider, you will get a number to send a text message containing f without quotes. After sending the SMS to the number, you will receive a confirmation code. Now enter the confirmation code on the window open on your computer screen. Done! Now you can update status, send message, add friends and many more on facebook using your mobile phone. You can stop or control the service at any time. While you are logged in to your facebook account on your computer then go ahead and click on Settings at the top of your facebook window and open Account Settings. Go to the Mobile tab available on settings page. Control the incoming messages and updates from Facebook or stop that service from there. You can stop the service by sending a message with content as Stop to 9232232665. To I am not sure whether the above procedure still works since I haven't used facebook for nearly a year now. - Original Message - From: Phen Varghese phenvargh...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Cc: l...@voicevision.in Sent: Monday, April 02, 2012 11:11 AM Subject: [AI] About updating your status in your profile in facebook. You can invest in SIPs with frequencies ranging from daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly or quarterly depending on your financial goals. For example, I think for me, property investment is the best option with very high returns and safety but lot of hard work and stress. However, for smaller amounts, you can go for Systematic Investment Plans by top equity funds. It averages your risks and returns in the medium and long term you will never be a loser given you take a right redemption decision. Well, in terms of debt instruments, I don’t favor them at all as even the highest rate of interest on FDs or bonds are always lesser than your inflation rate so actually value of your money goes on deteriorating. One very important tip which Sameer shared with me, Please don’t keep any money more than say 10,000 in your savings account lying just like that. It depreciates the value of your money. Instruct your bank to keep all the cash in sweep in-sweep out or link fixed deposit as ICICI calls it. In case of ICICI, All you’re your cash in savings account other than your designated amount is converted in to link fixed deposits in the multiples of 5000 and your can earn almost double the return than your savings account or equivalent to fixed deposit while it remains flexible for you to remove them any time or issue check without any penalty. Ideal tenure for this is the highest tenure. Good luck and all your returns losses are yours and not mine... Hi, Don't worry, the amount will be refunded to you by way of reversal of transaction. However, it takes around 4 days. You don't neet to lodge complaint anywhere for the unsuccessfull recharge. [AI] Baby Simran comes to life
Baby Simran comes to life; track Rajdhani from today Source: Rajendra Aklekar, DNA | Last Updated 03:30(21/10/11) Share | Call 'Baby Simran' to track trains Mumbai: Track the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani and a host of other Rajdhani trains on-line from today. Just log in to http://www.simran.in/ and find out the train location, running position and location with respect to the next stop in terms of kilometres. DNA has reported that the railways had been working on this project on September 28. The Indian Railways on Wednesday went live with the new satellite-based technology that would help commuters waiting at stations to track down the exact location of trains. Affectionately called Baby Simran, (the official name of the project is Satellite Imaging for Rail Navigation or SIMRAN), the project took railway ministry four years to complete. The system will provide the public and passengers information such as train's running position (whether it is running on time or late and the duration of delay), and location with respect to the next stop in terms of kms. A top Mumbai-based official said, The Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) at Lucknow and Kanpur IIT had been working on the project, which also involves getting details on mobile phones. The work is being done in a phase-wise manner. It's a Rs 100-crore project, and it will eventually connect all stations and trains. The project works on the principles of GPS navigation and radio frequency and would require installation of radio tags on locomotives, stations and control rooms connected to a central server. The process also involves digital mapping of stations,'' he elaborated. [AI] Fw: Email trackers--This is good info.
- Original Message - From: Alfred Christopher To: Alfred Christopher Sent: Friday, October 07, 2011 3:38 AM Subject: Email trackers--This is good info. I think I will try this in future!! This is great, check it all out! E-Mail Tracker Programs -- very interesting and a must read! The man that sent this information is a computer tech. He spends a lot of time clearing the junk off computers for people and listens to complaints about speed. All forwards are not bad, just some. Be sure you read the very last paragraph. _ He wrote: By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with snopes.com and/or truthorfiction.com for determining whether information received via email is just that: true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites. Advice from snopes.com VERY IMPORTANT!! 1) Any time you see an email that says forward this on to '10' (or however many) of your friends, sign this petition, or you'll get bad luck or you'll get good luck or you'll see something funny on your screen after you send it or whatever --- it almost always has an email tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and emails of those folks you forward to. The host sender is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of 'active' email addresses to use in SPAM emails or sell to other spammers. Even when you get emails that demand you send the email on if you're not ashamed of God/Jesus --- that is email tracking, and they are playing on our conscience. These people don't care how they get your email addresses - just as long as they get them. Also, emails that talk about a missing child or a child with an incurable disease how would you feel if that was your child --- email tracking. Ignore them and don't participate! 2) Almost all emails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all any of this type of email is, is a way to get names and 'cookie' tracking information for telemarketers and spammers -- to validate active email accounts for their own profitable purposes. You can do your Friends and Family members a GREAT favor by sending this information to them. You will be providing a service to your friends. And you will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam emails in the future! Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(s) to those types of listing regardless how inviting they might sound! Or make you feel guilty if you don't! It's all about getting email addresses and nothing more. /SPAN You may think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT! Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later and very possibly a virus attached! Plus, we are helping the spammers get rich! Let's not make it easy for them! ALSO: Email petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress of any other organization - i.e. social security, etc. To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address of the person signing the petition, so this is a waste of time and you are just helping the email trackers. DONT FORGET...When you do forward emails on PLEASE delete the names and email addresses of the person who sent it to you before you forward it on that also helps prevent trackers and scammers from obtaining the email addresses of your friends ultimately yours as well. Tips for Handling Telemarketers Three Little Words That Work!! (1)The three little words are: 'Hold On, Please...' Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt. Then when you eventually hear the phone company's 'beep-beep-beep' tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task. These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting.. (2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the
[AI] Steve Jobs Speech - GOOD Read!
Steve Jobs' Convocation Speech (Stanford) Delivered 12 June 2005, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA Thank you. I'm honored to be with you today for your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. Truth be told, I never graduated from college, and this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today, I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories. The first story is about connecting the dots. I dropped out of Reed College after the first six months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out? It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted www.lifeofexcellence.com at birth by a lawyer and his wife except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking, We've got an unexpected baby boy; Do you want him? They said, Of course. My biological mother found out later that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would go to college. This was the start in my life. And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out okay. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked far more interesting. It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms. I returned coke bottles for the five cent deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example: Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating. None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. www.lifeofexcellence.com And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on that calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards 10 years later. Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the wellworn path, and that will make all the difference. My second story is about love and loss. I was lucky I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz¹ and I started Apple in my parents' garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a two billion dollar company with over 4000 employees. We'd just released our

Hi This story kept me absorbed till almost end..but when I read last stanza….literally I felt like as my heart skipped a beat. Indeed a master piece by Ruskin Bond. - Original Message - From: Anjina Bhat anjina1...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Friday, September 30, 2011 5:56 PM Subject: [AI] The Eyes Have It Dear folks A touchy story just read this : Heart stealing story by Ruskin Bond The Eyes Have It --- I HAD THE TRAIN compartment to myself up to Rohana, then a girl got in. The couple who saw her off were probably her parents. They seemed very anxious about her comfort and the woman gave the girl detailed instructions as to where to keep her things, when not to lean out of windows, and how to avoid speaking to strangers. They called their goodbyes and the train pulled out of the station. As I was totally blind at the time, my eyes sensitive only to light and darkness, I was unable to tell what the girl looked like. But I knew she wore slippers from the way they slapped against her heels. It would take me some time to discover something about her looks and perhaps I never would. But I liked the sound of her voice and even the sound of her slippers. 'Are you going all the way to Dehra? I asked. I must have been sitting in a dark corner because my voice startled her. She gave a little exclamation and said, I didn't know anyone else was here.' Well, it often happens that people with good eyesight fail to see what is right in front of them. They have too much to take in, I suppose. Whereas people who cannot see (or see very little) have to take in only the essentials, whatever registers tellingly on their remaining senses. I didn't see you either,' I said. 'But I heard you come in.' I wondered if I would be able to prevent her from discovering that I was blind. Provided I keep to my seat, I thought, it shouldn't be too difficult. The girl said, I am getting off at Saharanpur. My aunt is meeting me there.' Then I had better not get too familiar/ I replied. 'Aunts are usually formidable creatures.' 'Where are you going?' she asked. 'To Dehra and then to Mussoorie.' 'Oh, how lucky you are. I wish I were going to Mussoorie. I love the hills. Especially in October.' 'Yes, this is the best time,' I said, calling on my memories. The hills are covered with wild dahlias, the sun is delicious, and at night you can sit in front of a log fire and drink a little brandy. Most of the tourists have gone and the roads are quiet and almost deserted. Yes, October is the best time.' She was silent. I wondered if my words had touched her or whether she thought me a romantic fool. Then I made a mistake. 'What is it like outside?' I asked. She seemed to find nothing strange in the question. Had she noticed already that I could not see? But her next question removed my doubts. 'Why don't you look out of the window?' she asked. I moved easily along the berth and felt for the window ledge. The window was open and I faced it, making a pretence of studying the landscape. I heard the panting of the engine, the rumble of the wheels, and, in my mind's eye I could see telegraph posts flashing by. 'Have you noticed,' I ventured, 'that the trees seem to be moving while we seem to be standing still?' That always happens,' she said. 'Do you see any animals?' 'No,' I answered quite confidently. I knew that there were hardly any animals left in the forests near Dehra. I turned from the window and faced the girl and for a while we sat in silence. 'You have an interesting face,' I remarked. I was becoming quite daring but it was a safe remark. Few girls can resist flattery. She laughed pleasantly—a clear, ringing laugh. 'It's nice to be told I have an interesting face. I'm tired of people telling me I have a pretty face.' Oh, so you do have a pretty face, thought I. And aloud I said: 'Well, an interesting face can also be pretty.' 'You are a very gallant young man/ she said. 'But why are you so serious?' I thought, then, that I would try to laugh for her, but the thought of laughter only made me feel troubled and lonely. 'We'll soon be at your station/ I said. 'Thank goodness it's a short journey. I can't bear to sit in a train for more than two or three hours.' Yet I was prepared to sit there for almost any length of time, just to listen to her talking. Her voice had the sparkle of a mountain stream. As soon as she left the train she would forget our brief encounter. But it would stay with me for the rest of the journey and for some time after. The engine's whistle shrieked, the carriage wheels changed their sound and rhythm, the girl got up and began to collect her things. I wondered if she wore her hair in a bun or if it was plaited. Perhaps it was hanging loose over her shoulders. Or was it cut very short? The train drew slowly into the station. Outside, there was the shouting of porters and vendors and a high-pitched female voice near the carriage door. That voice must have

Press enter on the word of your choice, and the wrong spelling gets replaced by the correct spelling you have selected in the list. There are a few things to note; 1. Since it doesn't differentiate nouns from other words, you will hear the beep even after typing any name. don't get confused. 2. Disable the software in windows as there would be some songs, photos, etc. which it shows as wrong spelling. 3. I am facing a peculiar problem. Can you help me? I am trying to subscribe HDFC top 200 mutual fund from February this year. As you are aware KYC is mandatory from 1st January, this year. Though I have submitted KYC application with my application form, first time the KYC request has been rejected due to non-attestation of my LTI's. Then I resend the form with attestation. Second time this form has been rejected because I did not furnished medical certificate. Third time the application has been rejected due to unknown reason. I and my bank ICICI bank tried to locate the application but could not been able to track it. I could not understand that, why I am being refused again and again because of my blindness. If you have any idea about from where I can get justice and where to complain? Did SEBI have the complain mechanism? Friends, if you can help, I will be highly obliged. Regards. [AI] Dial #09, play into hands of cell cheats
Dial #09, play into hands of cell cheats Published: Saturday, Jun 11, 2011, 1:41 IST By Divyesh Singh | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA Many mobile phone users across the city have been losing money to a new tele-fraud. They have reported that they receive calls from unidentified numbers registered outside the state. The callers tell them that they have won gift vouchers and ask them to dial a few numbers to claim the prize. Once the victim dials the numbers, he finds out that he has lost his entire balance to calls made on premium numbers. Anand Gotukde, a mobile phone dealer from Kurla, said: I received a call around a month ago. The caller told me that he was calling on behalf of a mobile service provider company. He told me that I had won a gift voucher and, to complete the procedure, I would have to dial '#09' and then end the call. The next minute, I received an SMS from the service provider saying that I had lost my balance of around Rs2,000 to some user in Uttar Pradesh. In the same period, around eight to nine other mobile phone dealers from Kurla lost money to similar calls. Akbar Shaikh, another victim from Kurla, said: I complained about the call to my service provider, but it could not do anything as its system reflected that I had made a call on a premium number. [AI] Your cell phone could cause cancer, says W H O
Your cell phone could cause cancer, says WHO Published: Wednesday, Jun 1, 2011, 11:11 IST Place: NEW YORK | Agency: PTI Heavy use of mobile phones and other wireless communication devices could possibly cause cancer, the World Health Organisation has said and asked people to use texting and free-hands devices to reduce the risk. The electromagnetic fields generated by such devices are possibly carcinogenic to humans, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced at the end of an eight-day meeting yesterday in Lyon, France. A group of 31 experts from 14 countries has reached this classification based on its review of the human evidence coming from epidemiological studies, ABC News reported. The experts also pointed to an increased incidence of glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said in a statement. The number of mobile phone subscriptions is estimated at 5 billion globally. The conclusion means that there could be some risk, and therefore we need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer risk, said Jonathan Samet from the University of Southern California, the chairman of the group of scientists. The IARC, which is part of the WHO, cautioned that current scientific evidence showed only a possible link, not a proven one, between wireless devices and cancers. It is important that additional research be conducted into the long-term, heavy use of mobile phones, Christopher Wild, director of the IARC said. Pending the availability of such information, it is important to take pragmatic measures to reduce exposure such as hands-free devices or texting. ©2011 PTI. All rights reserved. Patil patil_ro...@dataone.in wrote: Hello, copying below an important article from DNA. Today, with technological know-how growing leaps and bounds, almost everything is just a click away on the internet, be it paying bills, booking tickets, buying insurance, net banking or filing income tax returns. However, the internet does have its perils and we should know and learn to tackle online identity theft scams. Phishing scams: Phishing scammers send fraudulent emails disguised as an official email request from a bank to gain private and sensitive information. Recipients are lured into believing the mail and they click on a link that leads them to a fake website that looks similar to the bank's actual website. This way, the fraudsters capture confidential details such as customer ID, IPIN, credit/debit card numbers, card expiry date and CVV number. Customer's email address is obtained by the fraudster through untrustworthy sites where the customer would have revealed his email address or shared it in chat rooms, blogs or mailing lists. On its website, HDFC Bank suggests that when customers realise they have been victims of a phishing scam, they should immediately access their netbanking account and change the IPIN and verify recent transactions in the account. If no fraudulent transactions are observed, then they must forward the phishing email to the bank for future reference. Vishing: This is a combination of voice and phishing. The fraudster sets up an automatic dialer and when the phone is answered, a pre-recorded message is played that tells the customer that his/her credit card has had illegal activity and the customer should call the recorded phone number immediately. When the customer calls the number, it is answered by a computer-generated voice that instructs the customer to enter his/her 16-digit credit card number. Once the customer begins to follow instructions, the customer falls prey by giving his personal details like date of birth, passport number and mother's maiden number. Hence, in case of any suspicion, the customer should disconnect the call and immediately report it to the bank. An ICICI Bank spokesperson warns, Do not leave any personal or account details on any telephone system that you are directed to. When a telephone number is given, you should first call the phone number on the back of your credit card or on your bank statement to verify whether the given number actually belongs to the bank. We generate awareness amidst our customers through our communication on the website, advertisements, mailers and statements. Zeus: Zeus is a Trogan that infects the end users machine. Today, its one of the most common Trojan impacting bank customers. The Trojan gets downloaded on the user's machine and when the he clicks on a link, an attachment opens from an unknown website. The Trojan gets installed and if the person starts his net banking activities, the Trojan captures the customer's confidential details, which leads to fraudulent activities. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the end user to ensure that his anti-virus is updated and his machine is notinfected. Use a virtual keypad: While carrying out net banking activities through public computers, there are chances that your user id and password may be hacked through a spyware or Trojan that may be installed purposely in certain computers to leak personal details. When you use the keyboard and enter your password, hackers may be able to capture your password via advanced key loggers (Hidden

[AI] Microsoft nears $8.5 bn Skype buy in web shift
Microsoft is close to buying internet telephony network Skype in an $8.5 billion deal, a source familiar with the situation said, as it seeks to regain ground on growing rivals such as Google. Buying the loss-making but popular Skype would underline Microsoft's need to gain new customers and platforms for its software as smartphones and tablets explode in popularity. Skype, which allows people to make calls at no charge, would also give Microsoft a foothold in potentially the lucrative video-conferencing market as global businesses seeking to reduce expenditure shift to lower-cost ways of communicating. Microsoft has already put more energy and resources into mobile and internet technologies as the use of PCs, which underpin its Windows and Office franchise, is under threat. This change was starkly illustrated last year when Apple's portfolio of coveted consumer goods propelled it past Microsoft to become the world's most valuable technology company. The maker of iPhones and iPads has since been named as the most valuable brand too, overtaking Google. The Skype deal -- which would be the biggest in the 36-year history of the world's largest software company -- is expected to be announced as early as Tuesday morning, the source told Reuters. Microsoft and Luxembourg-based Skype declined comment. The $8.5 billion mooted price tag, including debt, was a surprise. Although the sum would not stretch cash-rich Microsoft, some said it was high for a company whose ownership has changed several times during its relatively short life. In this atmosphere of Internet Bubble 2.0, picking up an unprofitable online company for roughly 10 times sales probably seems downright cheap, Shanghai-based Michael Clendenin, managing director of consulting firm RedTech Advisors, said. But if you consider (it) was just valued at about $2.5 billion 18 months ago when a chunk was sold off, then $8.5 billion seems generous and means Microsoft has a high wall to climb to prove to investors that Skype is a necessary linchpin for the company's online and mobile strategy, he added. This was echoed by Ben Wood, head of research firm CCS Insight: The big unanswered question is how do Skype assets work for Micrososft, they already have instant messaging, IP telephony...how do you justify the price? That being said, Skype is a vibrant community, a diverse global community with a young population and Skype is making inroads into older parts of the population too, Wood added. Skype, which delayed plans for an initial public offering expected to raise $1 billion, has been looking at other options, including tie-ups with Facebook and Google. Such a deal was seen as valuing Skype at $3 billion to $4 billion. STOCK LANQUISHING Despite doubling sales and profit in the last eight years, Microsoft's stock has largely languished, as investors worry about its ability to counter new rivals or adapt to new ways of computing, especially the threat posed by new mobile devices. Microsoft has countered with a new version of its mobile software -- which will power the next generation of Nokia smartphones -- and is developing a new operating system that will work on low-power tablet PCs. But online video chat remains a weakness. Although the company already has video in its Windows Live Messenger service, it is not available on its Windows Phone 7 software. Skype also makes versions of its own service for use on iPhone and iPad, Research in Motion's BlackBerry and Android phones. It cannot be used on Microsoft phones. Apple's FaceTime video calling service -- available on its latest iPhone and Mac computers -- has been a big hit. Google recently followed suit by adding video to its popular Google Talk application for smartphones running on its Android system. -- Average investors who try to do a lot of trading will only make their brokers rich. [AI] Soon, press Alt+4 to get rupee symbol
Soon, press Alt+4 to get rupee symbol Published: Tuesday, Feb 8, 2011, 2:16 IST By Arun Jayan | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA Rupee symbolThe Indian rupee has finally got a place on the computer keyboard. The symbol will be placed above the numeral 4, alongside the dollar sign. A user just has to press the right 'Alt' key along with '4' to get the symbol. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), New Delhi, has approved the proposal submitted by the Department of Information Technology (DIT), a project implemented by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune. Mahesh Kulkarni, group coordinator of C-DAC's graphic intelligence-based script technology (Gist), told DNA that all the major original equipment manufacturers (OEM) like Microsoft, Linux, IBM, HP and HCL have been notified to roll out keyboards with the rupee symbol. The Unicode Consortium in USA, which sets language standards, had earlier approved the proposal to encode the symbol as per Unicode standards. BIS has now given its nod. We finalised the position after various rounds of discussion with all major stakeholders. Since it is two-layered (ALT and 4) it will be easy for the end user to type the symbol, he said. He said it would just be a matter of months before the new keyboards are rolled out by the OEMs and operating systems like Microsoft, and Linux would also integrate it. In three days, we will complete the inscript keyboard with the new symbol. We are coming up with an enhanced version of the Indian language keyboard, which will have Indian numerals on it, said Kulkarni. A high-level meeting under the Union ministry of information technology is scheduled be held in New Delhi. It will discuss the enhanced version keyboard and take a final call regarding the project. We have almost completed it and we will be presenting the enhanced Indian version keyboard proposal to DIT. It will in turn submitit to BIS, he said. A Microsoft official said that once the company integrates the new rupee symbol, the new keyboards with the symbol can be produced in the next production cycle. Once integrated, a user of all applications like Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint among others would be able to use the symbol, said the official. Get numbers right this time, help the census with correct disability info!

[AI] Now, a mobile phone designed for senior citizens
Now, a mobile phone designed for senior citizens - Lifestyle - DNA Mumbai, 7 January, 2011 Teaching elderly people how to use a cellphone can be frustrating. Businessman Jagdishbhai Patel experienced this first-hand when he was planning to buy a new mobile phone for his father, 62-year-old Nangibhai Vishrambhai Patel. Most handsets in the market either had too many features or had tiny buttons on a small keypad. My father is growing old and his shaky fingers end up pressing two or more buttons at the same time, he says. Jagdishbhai's miseries, however, came to an end when he bought the Aasaan, part of a new range of cellphones that have large keypads and numbers printed on them in magnified, bold letters. The phone is simple to use, has large fonts, enhanced sound clarity and even an SOS (Save Our Soul) button which rings loudly if he's in any emergency. And all this for just Rs3,250. The SOS button, in fact, is a major highlight of the phone. When activated, it not only beeps a siren which helps alert the people nearby but it also automatically sends a text message to five predefined emergency numbers in the phone-book. Following that, the phone starts dialling those emergency numbers one by one until someone answers. If all calls go unanswered, the entire loop is repeated thrice. If that, too, doesn't work, an SMS is automatically sent to those numbers, says Sandeep Parasrampuria, director, iBall, the company which has launched this range of phones, designed specially for senior citizens. iBall has been in the computer accessories and digital lifestyle business and is now entering the mobile handsets business. There is a huge category of consumers which is tech-phobic but still wants cellphone connectivity. Senior citizens form a large chunk of this and we identified this as a gap in the cellphone market in India, he says, adding that the company has also launched phones for different segments of people. Analysts say that a phone meant for senior citizens is a first in India and call it a good entry strategy, considering that the purchase often has the emotional aspect of gifting the product to parents. Naveen Mishra and Vishal Bhatnagar, senior analysts at IDC India, said, Be it dual SIMs or handsets with multiple language software, Indian mobile phone companies are segmenting their target audience to launch their products. While over 50% of the population of 1.2 billion Indians comprises youngsters, there is still a huge market comprising elderly and tech-phobic people who want a simple phone for making calls. According to market estimates, about 108 million mobile phones were sold in India in 2009-2010 alone, generating about Rs27,000 crore in sales. A host of this was due to the entry of new Indian companies into the handsets business, namely Micromax, Maxx Mobile, Karbonn, Intex and Lava Mobiles. Globally, Austrian company Emporia focuses on manufacturing phones for the elderly and is in the process of building phones for the blind. These would read out incoming SMSes and the number and name of the caller for an incoming call besides reading out each number that is pressed when making an outgoing call. [AI] An Inspiring Video
Sean Stephenson is a master of motivation and overcoming the excuses in life that hold us back from our goals. That is his passion and that is his life's purpose, and he LIVES that purpose. In this video, much as in his life as a whole, he is going to show that there are really NO LIMITATIONS,and inspires one to set one's sites on a worthy goal far beyond the horizon so that a person can set a course that will bring him to a mighty destiny. Sean Stephenson was born with a genetic disorder that makes his bones as brittle as match-sticks. He suffered excruciating bonebreaks more than 200 times before he reached his 18th birthday. And because of all of these breaks, he failed to grow properly, and now, as an adult, he is only 2 and a half feet tall and trapped in a wheel chair forever. The point here, in case you missed it, is thatSean has way more excuses than you have for being miserable. Here's the story -- When Sean was a kid, may be around 18, his favourite holiday was Halloween. Because on Halloween, his parents dressed both him and his wheelchair into something that looked like some kind of cool, rolling costume... It was the one day of the year that he couldpass himself off as normal. Instead of people looking at him like, oh, that poor kid... they just said, hey, cool costume, dude! So there he was sitting on the floor while his parents were dressing up the chair, and someone accidentally hit the door stop, and the bedroom door swung closed and shattered his thigh bone. Ever broken a femur? The pain was blinding. But that was nothing compared to the truth that hit him like a ton of bricks... he had broken bones before so many times, and he knew the drill... it was off to thehospital for him... Halloween was canceled for the year. In that moment he cried out in anguish and,for the first time, he even questioned if God hated him. Was that why he was born to suffer? Sean's mother soberly said to him: Look Sean-- You've got a decision to make here, and you've got to make it righthere and now. You are going to be with this chair for the rest of your life, and you have to decide if this condition is going to be a burden or a BLESSING. It's going to be up to you how you live your life. Sean has made his condition a BLESSING and he's lived every day of his life that way. His life is a MASTERPIECE of adventure, excitement, passion, romance, and love. He could spend all of his time thinking, poor me, look at how I have to live... , Because Sean is too busy for wasting time on that kind of BULLSHIT thinking. He's too busy LIVING. Now, as an adult, he's a professional therapist and an NLP master trainer, and master therapeutic hypnotist, and he uses his condition as a blessing every day. As he says, the chair gives him certain access to his patients most private fears... Because NOBODY can look Sean in the eyes and say, poor me... you just don't understand how tough my life has been. When they are with Sean they are forced to DEAL with their bullshit. Sean uses his condition as a blessing in his own life and as a blessing for his patients and fellow humans. As a consequence, where other therapists fail,or keep patients coming back for YEARS... Sean usually completely clears up all of their issues in one session. Yes. He IS that powerful. Now it's up to you to do the same thing... YOU have to decide... are you going to be theVICTIM of your life, or are you going to be its MASTER. Take a chance on your SELF. Take action, and stop being the victim of your life, and become the source, the cause, and the MASTER of a passionate destiny. If you don't already know who Sean is... prepare to be BLOWN AWAY. He is a master Motivational Speaker, and Hypnotherapist... he's worked in the White House, he's publishes his own online magazine, he's spoken before both houses of Congress, his THIRD BOOK is going to be released soon, and he's currently in negotiations with several networks for his own television show. Why is he getting so much attention? He was born with a genetic bone disorder called O.I. (or osteogenesis imperfecta) where his bones are as brittle as match sticks. He wasn't supposed to live for more than 24 hours, and even if he did live, he was supposed to be weak, fragile, and almost certainly not see his 10th birthday... Obviously he proved them wrong. And though he broke bones more than 200 times before his 18th birthday, he is still proving them wrong every day. Watch this short 4 minute clip from The Discovery Channel's special on Sean... and prepare to be *inspired* to become more than you are. [AI] Mobile games may hike your bills
Mobile games may hike your bills be aware of cyber criminals Divyesh Singh / DNA Wednesday, May 19, 2010 23:52 IST Mumbai: Beware smart phone users. You may not be doing a smart thing when you download a free software or a mobile game on your cellphone. For cyber criminals have now zeroed in on you. Unknown to you, your mobile phone might start dialling premium rate numbers across the globe. ? Blame it on a self-launching Trojan that has dropped into your cellphone when you were downloading a free software or a game. Cyber criminals, who are controlling such Trojans, will be dialling the numbers, but you will be the one footing the bill. A recent research by Kaspersky Laboratories has found that a new game, called 3D Anti-Terrorist, is often popping up on many websites. Windows mobile smartphone users can download it for free. It takes up just 1.5MB space, and comes with a file named reg.exe. Kaspersky lab expert Denis Masllenikov has said in a report that the file is actually a Trojan that calls premium rate numbers across the globe. It gets installed the moment a user completes downloading the game on his smartphone. Masllenikov's report says that the Trojan has been made by Russian virus writers. Once installed, it launches itself. It was detected last month, and ever since it has been found that calls from infected phones are being made to six premium rate numbers across the globe. Last year too, the Kaspersky labs had detected a similar kind of Trojan. It came with a free software called iporn player, which promised smartphone users access to various porn sites. Once the player was installed, the Trojan started calling premium rate numbers in places like Austria, Lichtenstein, Burkina Faso, Switzerland and Nauru. The bills of the infected phones ran up to huge amounts, and the users came to know of it only after receiving the bills. IT experts say that the only way to avoid smart phones being infected by such viruses and Trojans is not to download software or other files from unknown websites. The users should only download software from phone manufacturers' official websites. Masllenikov said, Cyber criminals can target any person's phone at any location. If smart phones are widely used in a particular country, users there are more likely to fall prey to this. Tenchnology evangelist Vijay Mukhi told DNA, The premium rate calls are mostly made to pay-per-call international numbers and friendship lines. There could be a person somewhere in the world, who has actually subscribed to this service after being offered heavy discounts on the existing market rates. He will be making the calls, but the charges for them will be paid by the user whose phone has been infected. [AI] How Does A Computer Virus Work
A virus can spell doom for your computer A Computer Virus shows us that how vulnerable we are in this virtual world. A properly engineered executed virus can totally disrupt the entire system of an office, city or even a country causing loss of billions of dollars. For example, experts estimate that the Mydoom worm infected approximately a quarter-million computers in a single day in January 2004. Back in March 1999, the Melissa virus was so powerful that it forced Microsoft and a number of other very large companies to completely turn off their e-mail systems until the virus could be contained. The I LOVEYOU virus in 2000 had a similarly devastating effect. In January 2007, a worm called Storm appeared -- by October, experts believed up to 50 million computers were infected. That's pretty impressive when you consider that many viruses are incredibly simple. **When you listen to the news, you hear about many different forms of electronic infection. The most common are: Viruses - A virus is a small piece of software that causes unwanted and unethical activity on real programs. For example, a virus might attach itself to a program such as a spreadsheet program. Each time the spreadsheet program runs, the virus runs, too, and it has the chance to reproduce (by attaching to other programs) or wreak havoc. E-mail viruses - An e-mail virus is a unethical program which travels as an attachment to e-mail messages, and usually replicates itself by automatically mailing itself to dozens of people in the victim's e-mail address book. Some of these email viruses get launched even when you view the infected message in the preview pane of your e-mail software. Trojan horses - A Trojan horse is simply a computer program. The program claims to do one thing (it may claim to be a game) but instead does damage when you run it (it may erase your hard disk). Trojan horses have no way to replicate automatically. Worms - A worm is a small piece of software that uses computer networks and security holes to replicate itself. A copy of the worm scans the network for another machine that has a specific security hole. It copies itself to the new machine using the security hole, and then starts replicating from there, as well. *In this article, we will discuss viruses -- both traditional viruses and e-mail viruses -- so that you can learn how they work and understand how to protect yourself.** Virus Origins Computer viruses are called viruses because they share some of the traits of biological viruses. A computer virus passes from computer to computer like a biological virus passes from person to person. Unlike a cell, a virus has no way to reproduce by itself. Instead, a biological virus must inject its DNA into a cell. The viral DNA then uses the cell's existing machinery to reproduce itself. In some cases, the cell fills with new viral particles until it bursts, releasing the virus. In other cases, the new virus particles bud off the cell one at a time, and the cell remains alive. A computer virus shares some of these traits. A computer virus must piggyback on top of some other program or document in order to launch. Once it is running, it can infect other programs or documents. Obviously, the analogy between computer and biological viruses stretches things a bit, but there are enough similarities that the name sticks. People write computer viruses. A person has to write the code, test it to make sure it spreads properly and then release it. A person also designs the virus's attack phase, whether it's a silly message or the destruction of a hard disk. Why do they do it? There are at least three reasons. The first is the same psychology that drives vandals and arsonists. Why would someone want to break a window on someone's car, paint signs on buildings or burn down a beautiful forest? For some people, that seems to be a thrill. If that sort of person knows computer programming, then he or she may funnel energy into the creation of destructive viruses. The second reason has to do with the thrill of watching things blow up. Some people have a fascination with things like explosions and car wrecks. When you were growing up, there might have been a kid in your neighborhood who learned how to make gunpowder. And that kid probably built bigger and bigger bombs until he either got bored or did some serious damage to himself. Creating a virus is a little like that -- it creates a bomb inside a computer, and the more computers that get infected the more fun the explosion. The third reason involves bragging rights, or the thrill of doing it. Sort of like Mount Everest -- the mountain is there, so someone is compelled to climb it. If you are a certain type of programmer who sees a security hole that could be exploited, you might simply be compelled to exploit the hole yourself before someone else beats you to it. Of course, most virus creators seem to miss the point
[AI] Rovio, the robot
Rovio, the robot Hyderabad-based software company Buddibot has launched a mobile web camera that helps families stay in touch with distant silvers At first glance, Rovio appears to be a hi-tech, remote-controlled toy; a turtle-like creature in metal and chrome that darts this way and that, and wanders all over the house. But amusement is the least of its functions - it is actually a mobile web camera (web cam) that helps families keep in touch with silver members and monitor their movements through streaming audio and video. Patented by WowWee Technologies, a Canadian firm, the web cam operates on software designed by Buddibot, a web-applications company headquartered in Hyderabad, India. The omni-directional device with microphones is wi-fi enabled, which means it can be integrated with high-frequency wireless local area networks. What's more, it can be controlled from anywhere in the world through the Internet. Rovio is much more than a remote, roaming surveillance system, though. It is easy to navigate and elders can set reminders for medication and diet, says A S Machiraju, co-founder and marketing head, Buddibot. Through the use of 'Virtual Assistant' networks, it can facilitate social interaction on the Net and even look for information on search engines on any topics of your choice. As for entertainment, it can access music and videos over the Internet for playback on a PC. And when its battery runs out, Rovio will remind you to plug it into the dock for charging. While Buddibot is primarily targeting NRIs, the company hopes people across India will also buy Rovio for their elderly parents who live alone. The device costs Rs 14,850 and you have to shell out another Rs 1,750 for an annual subscription for connectivity and Web services. At present, the device sells only in Hyderabad but will soon find its way to electronic stores in all major Indian cities. You can order it online at smartbotsdirect.com, or call (0) 9848022382 for more details. [AI] Microsoft Midori OS - Operating System is coming
Microsoft Midori OS - Operating System is coming WINDOWS is a name that has ruled the whole computer world since its first launch in November 1985. Since then it is like a trademark of Microsoft Corporation. With many advanced versions of Windows available today such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, it is the most used operating system in the world. In 2010, Microsoft launched WINDOWS 2007, but now here is time to experience yet another technology of operating systems. Yes, MICROSOFT is working on a new generation of operating systems called Cloud-Based Operating System and rumors are there that MIDORI will be their first such operating system, which will replace Windows fully from computer map. WHAT´S THE DIFFERENCE? MIDORI is an offshoot of Microsoft Research´s Singularity operating system. In this the tools and libraries are completely managed code. MIDORI is designed to run directly on native hardware (x86, x64 and ARM), will be hosted on the Windows Hyper-V hypervisor, or even be hosted by a Windows process. MIDORI can be also seen as MICROSOFT´S answer those competitors who are applying Virtualization as a mean to solving issues within contemporary computing. The main idea behind MIDORI is to develop a lightweight portable OS which can be mated easily to lots of various applications. IMPORTANCE OF MIDORI For knowing the importance of MIDORI you have to think about, how an operating system is loaded on a computer. Actually operating system is loaded onto a hard disk physically located on that machine. In this way, the operating system is tied very tightly to that hardware. As Windows is dependent on hardware, it might face opposition from contemporary ways of working because people are extremely mobile in using different devices in order get diverse information. Due to this trend in installing different applications on a single computer may led to different compatibility issues whenever the machine require updating. The new operating system will solve these problems by the concept of Virtualizing. This will solve problems such as widespread security vulnerabilities, unexpected interactions among different applications, failures caused by errant extensions, plug-ins, and drivers and many more. The importance of this project for MICROSOFT can be understood by the fact that company choose Eric Rudder , former head of Microsoft´s server and tools business and a key member of Chairman Bill Gates´ faction of the company, to handle it. WHEN WILL IT BE LAUNCHED? Just Wait and See. Microsoft has not declared any such date about launching of MIDORI, but there are rumors that this project is in incubation phase. But this all happened in 2006... when this service was introduced. I can't say whether the COP is sstill working with the same efficiency. - Original Message - From: Rohiet A.
