Please, please post messages relevant to the thread. For your questions, you can create a new thread if one doesn't already exist, or you can atleast change the subject line of the tread. Its becoming miserable following threads, with messages suddenly deviating from the topic. Sure you can find answers to your question here, but how will anyone be even willing to answer such a question in a thread that everyone is trying to avoid? Hi, If none of you can resist bashing M$ here, atleast mark this topic as off-topic (OT). I understand that as Free s/w promoters, its habitual for us to throw anything we can get hold of at the monopoly abuser. But this has nothing to do with our original mission. Mudslinging M$ will not improve free s/w. Besides, if you say that this discussion is to expose M$'s dirty tactics, it has the opposite effect. As Carbon monoxide would say, you just do not want to give them more Google search points. Each time you post a message with a link to that dirty site, you improve the chances of that site turning up during a Google search. Just count how many links are there to that site - nearly a dozen in this thread alone! You should be trying to bury that site- not make it more visible. Just remember how the free s/w community managed to hide an allegedly illegal free s/w called DeCSS- a CD copy protection cracker. They posted links on another free s/w - also called DeCSS. Also remember how a group of bloggers posted links to a web page, so that when you searched 'weapons of mass destruction', it would lead to a page that mocks US govt. Wow! That's some compliment, coming from you, sir! I am really flattered! In reality, Zacharia reminded me of the circumstances under which I started experimenting with FOSS and GNU/Linux. That is, when I was a +1 Loyolite. During that time, I was completely inexperienced and used to experiment extensively- often failing with disastrous consequences and drawing a lot of flak from my parents. I was desperately searching for help. But I was convinced that FOSS would provide me an unparalleled opportunity to learn. Needless to say, I was right - it went so far as to secure me a job! Today, I shudder with fear to think of others facing the same difficulty. Luckily, groups like these are here. Still, I have my fair share of respect for all beginners - for showing the courage to take the plunge. Sometimes, not even the best students don't show that quality of learning. As for me, working with people in this group is a privilege. Regards, Gokul Das On May 16, 7:50 pm, V. Sasi Kumar sasi@gmail.com wrote: Well said, Gokul! Wow! Blender?!!! Blender and Inkscape take enormous effort to master, though once you have learned, it is very efficient and easy to use. Also, consider the fact that very few centres conduct professional training for DTP operators and Graphics designers using free software. That leads me to believe that they learned it all by themselves- and now they are teaching others. If all the facts we have are correct, these people may be even greater free software fans and preachers than many of us here. I am sure that we are in for a pleasant surprise if we contact them. [fsug-tvm] Re: Telnet not working
Hi, I don't know if this is relevant here, but in Gnu/Linux systems, I have seen integers commonly used in place of subnet mask. This integer indicates how many MSBs (most significant bits) of the 32 bit subnet mask is 1. Thus, a subnet mask 255.255.0.0 would correspond to 16 and 255.255.255.0 would correspond to 24. Besides, the hosts.allow man page says this: An expression of the form ‘n.n.n.n/mm’ is interpreted as a ‘net/ masklength’ pair, where ‘mm’ is the number of consecutive ‘1’ bits in the netmask applied to the ‘n.n.n.n’ address Regards, Gokul Das On May 15, 4:43 pm, Syam Krishnan sya...@gmail.com wrote: What are those /24 doing at the end of these lines? [fsug-tvm] Re: Kerala University registration
Hi, Let me clarify a few points: 1) Using ASP may not be against our IT policy- its just a scripting language. But it is an indicator that the server is an IIS running on a windoze server. Isn't that against our IT policy of favouring FOSS? 2) The site has 2 parts: i) The home part that is hosted in Canada with IP addr: 216.55.97.83. Its HTTP header names its server as: Apache/1.3.41 (Unix) PHP/4.4.4 mod_ssl/2.8.31 OpenSSL/0.9.8g ii) A part that deals with student info, registration etc (http:// kucc.keralauniversity.edu). This is our controversial subject. It is hosted in India (NIB) with IP addr: 210.212.239.17. Its HTTP header names its server as: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 Its not possible to entirely believe these information, since it is possible to spoof server info. It can be concluded only on the basis of other clues. But atleast in this case, the info seems reliable. Hi Jikku, I helped Zacharia over phone and IM yesterday. But we had a problem. He has an Nvidia gforce graphics card and Hardy indicated that restricted driver for it was available. I asked him to install it- but as soon as it was finished, the system started suffering recurring kernel panics. This is probably some problem with the proprietary driver. I have asked him to disable the driver as soon as he reboots. But one step remains- the xorg.conf should have been backed up (xorg.conf.bak or something) and replaced by the driver utility. We need to restore the backup. I couldn't do this due to the problems. But this will also mean that the display will revert to 800*600 resolution. So you will have to add the correct resolution to xorg.conf file. I hope you can help him with this. If you need help with this, please do contact us. [fsug-tvm] Re: 3gp no sound
Hi, I think I know that problem- I have experienced the same. The problem is that 3GP from Nokia, Sony Erricson etc embeds audio in SAMR format (Adaptive Multi-Rate Floating point). This is a patented and highly protected format. So, GNU/Linux playback engines like gstreamer and xine intentionally avoid supporting it, instead choosing to totally neglect the audio stream. The suggested solution includes installing Real player (I don't know if it works) or custom compiling AMR codecs. The AMR codecs are maintained as a separate project (amrnb and amrwb libraries) at http://www.penguin.cz/~utx/amr . I don't know how to deal with these libraries, but hope this helps: http://flixforums.com/archive/index.php/t-240.html . Regards, Gokul Das --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. [fsug-tvm] Re: Kerala University registration
Hi, Aneesh! Thanks for the article. But ASP alone may not explain why you are having problems with firefox. ASP is a server side scripting technology - it has no effect at the browser. If designed properly, it should be possible to write an ASP page that works flawlessly at any browser (Orkut is on ASPX). The problem really is what Sasi sir points out- non adherence to W3C (World wide web consortium) standards. W3C is the organization that defines web standards like HTML, CSS etc. Its like all other web browsers follow W3C while IE follows a totally different standard. Good developers write W3C compliant pages and tweak them to work on IE, while half trained ones write pages that work only on IE. That may be what happened with University. If you believe that a complaint is going to solve it- it will be less than half your worries (and theirs). The site is one of the crappiest I have ever seen. There is a well known vulnerability that allows others to view your marklist without requiring your password (that which they tried to avoid). I once did a rudimentary vulnerability check on the site. It was just short a cracking attempt - but if somebody wanted to crack it, the site would collapse in less than 5 minutes. The site does critical operations like input sanitation right at the browser using javascript (baaad design!). I was able to turn off javascript and pass a spurious input. The server threw up an error with all the internal details - including about HTML and SQL servers. Forcing this kind of error is the essential first step in a site cracking. I didn't proceed any further- but just imagine someone passing some spurious SQL query. They have tons of student data on the server just waiting to be mauled on! So how do you expect a team that can't even ensure basic security to ensure W3C compliance? Its not so much about arrogance as it is about incompetence. Having said so much- I am not not trying to discourage you. I can empathize with you. Its annoying when somebody blames your choice instead of their own incompetence. Its even worse when it is about something important as student registration. Finally, as an epilogue- I can no longer access my student details (incl marklist). This happens every time- albeit to different students! Regards, Gokul Das --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. Hi, I have the problem solved, albeit partially. On May 9, 12:29 pm, Syam Krishnan sya...@gmail.com wrote: In Fedora, in the 'Network configuration' utility, you can set a static IP for an interface, and then deselect the 'Controlled by NetworkManager' option. Thanks for the very valuable info ശ്യാം ചേട്ടാ. I was able to identify the 'Network configuration' as 'system-config- network' [ http://fedoramobile.org/Members/MrHappy/system-config-network ]. Unfortunately, it isn't available even on Ubuntu repository. Besides, the page itself says, NetworkManager and system-config- network do not handle support for static IP addressing very well. Better support of static IP addresses is planned and in-progress for NetworkManager in the future. So, I guess I will have to wait more. On May 9, 2:31 pm, Sunil Thomas Thonikuzhiyil vu2...@gmail.com wrote: How about using wicd as an alternate network manager ? Also see this page. http://shibuvarkala.blogspot.com/2008/12/howto-solve-static-ip-problem-in-ubuntu.html Sunil sir, thanks for the link - it proved most helpful in figuring out the problem. All the while, I was trying to rename the 'Auto eth1' connection and set its method from DHCP to manual. Seems that this is not enough- you have to 'Add' a new connection and 'copy-paste' the MAC address to it. This was exactly what പ്രസാദ് ചേട്ടന് was suggesting earlier -but I never even guessed that the problem was in the way of editing connections. It may be a problem with the way NM chooses the default profile. That however doesn't solve my problems completely. NM assigns the Static IP only after someone has logged in locally (this wasn't the case with NM 0.6). On the other hand, I need static IP for remote SSH login, possibly with no one locally logged in. So it seems that the only option left to me is to deactivate NM for now and use text configuration- until they fix it. Meanwhile, I will give WICD a try and see if it fits my need. Hi, Backtrack is live CD distro, though a vmware image is also available. I assume that you downloaded the ISO image. Just burn the image to a CD (don't write as a file) and use it like you would use an Ubuntu live CD. Now if want to install BT4 on harddisk, it is possible, but very risky and not recommended. There is a big chance that a normal user would screw up the installation process. If you still want to install it, make sure you understand each step well enough before you attempt it (you have to do it at your own risk). Hi, Since the signs of trouble begin with the POST screen - even before the OS menu, it is most likely a hardware trouble as ശ്യാം ചേട്ടന് points out. Doesn't sound like a software problem to me. I just faced the same problem with my system. Your symptoms indicate that the system has trouble reading the boot device (Harddisk). It may be a mechanical or electronic issue. In such a case, any test will indicate that the file system is fine, but the operation of the system will be erratic - with frequent freezes (due to virtual memory- especially windoze). I suggest that you backup all data and take the system to a service station and have it checked (especially the HDD). If your linux mint is still operational, try this (in a terminal) and post the output here. This gives a health report of the hard disk. sudo apt-get install smartmontools sudo smartctl -A /dev/sda Please note that I assume you have only one hard disk and it is listed as /dev/sda. Hi, @ BINNY You should avoid the use of stabilizer. UPS is good enough. Check your main supply- the live voltage and the earthing. You can ask someone who knows how to operate a multimeter. Watch out for any anomaly with UPS. Examining and repairing UPS will require specialized equipment and technician. That, considering possibility that the UPS may not be faulty at all. More information is needed to find the exact fault - you don't get much of that from symptom description alone. So I can't suggest much more. But, I would like to know if you faced any problems after replacing the SMPS. Also what make your motherboard is. Seeing that it was your SMPS that blew up (or was it the motherboard?)- opening up and examining the blown supply by a proficient engineer may help identify the cause- but very few people bother doing that. Duck and cover! The Chinese are attacking! Ok, may be that is not what is happening! But at any rate- it is advisable not to probe the attacker. The best defense on the net for us commoners is to remain completely stealthy. Trying to probe the attacker will just give away more data for the attacker to use. Don't risk it unless you are a security expert. You should consider using a firewall to completely block any intrusion attempts (Firestarter or iptables). Once you set up the firewall, you can go to this site to make sure you are stealthy: https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 As for this particular incident, I am not sure what kind of attack it is, or even if it is an attack (I am not a security expert). And the chinese characters may not necessarily mean that it is in china. Anyway, besides firewall- I also recommend that you check your system for any rootkits (chkrootkit). [fsug-tvm] Re: Can Linux destroy the hardware?
Hi, @BINNY The more you describe the problem, the more it appears to me like a power supply issue rather than a power management issue. As far as I know, all computer CRT monitors are designed to switch off their CRT when the video signal form the system disappears. Other than that, their CRT power is in no way controlled by the power management system of the computer. The monitor supply is directly connected to AC mains- even when connected to the rear of the SMPS. Besides, the cable that connects the monitor to system (VGA) is analog. It carries not much digital info. You can verify this here: http://pinouts.ru/Video/VGA15.shtml . All these indicate a serious issue somewhere in your power supply and the power management system is innocent. For now, however, I would recommend avoiding sleep mode till you get your power supply issue solved. And as for the frequent monitor on/off - its always slightly strenuous - but the monitor manufacturers take care of that. It won't cause any realistic damage. And for the stabilizer - most manual stabilizer have a dial that is used to select a voltage range (ie, transformer step-up ratio). They still have an automatic negative feedback voltage controller element after that. I am not sure how this would affect a UPS connected to it- but, it wont be much different from when an automatic stabilizer is connected. So I still wouldn't recommend its use. Now the UPS- it is designed to isolate the mains and connect the inverted battery source when the voltage drops too low. This is not unusual. But if you are facing frequent mains drop, better get your mains and UPS checked. @ Yadu I believed you the first time you wrote that there was an 'insane' scheme. You didn't have to put the link up here to convince me :) . But still, thanks very much for the informative link. If you look carefully, you will find that the acpi kernel module was patched to make it insane. So it is very unlikely that any distro will use this 'insane' patch. But that link is important for me since it has some data for me to ponder over. @ nishandh Until recently, Ubuntu and may be other distros had some problems with power management- may be due to wrong sequence of power modes. But there was nothing that would blow up motherboards or crash and burn HDDs. Otherwise, many other competitors, including the 'all powerful monopolistic corporation' would have cashed on it. I was forced to write this up because he mentioned that reputation of Linux had taken a beating. That just makes our job of preaching FOSS a little harder. So I had to try to dispel some myths. The only way to win is to be competitive. Happy to see that you found it interesting. And yes. I never meant that ubuntu does damage by using default management options. I didn't imply that- I make it a point never to attack someone personally. I was just using your point to add some relevant details. Its just that the net has got lots of power management tweaks that just might turn out to be unhealthy. But it also turns out the tweaks are also labelled completely insane ! , experimental etc which is enough of a warning :) Thats interesting! (Completely insane?!! LOL!!). But that's exactly what I meant- the engineers should know what they are doing. The 'experimental' and 'insane' schemes are unlikely to make it to release builds, since any hardware damage will cause serious dent in reputation for the distro- even when it is not the distro's fault. That's why I added that I had no problems with them. Regards, Gokul Das --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. Hi, There is not enough detail to suggest a final solution. However, you can check this first- Open up the ALSA mixer panel (double click the speaker icon on the notification area on top panel). Then make sure that volume controls for 'Master', 'PCM' and 'Front' are all set to maximum. When 'PCM' control is at lowest, it often gives out some crackling sound when any audio is playing. I heard the same suggestion from my friend, but to date I have found no explanation why it is so. Infact, it looks like PPPoE is better due to following factors: a) PPPoE allows you to connect more than one system simultaneously. b) PPPoE gives an 'always ON' connection whereas bridged connection gets terminated when your system is shut down. c) PPPoE reconnects automatically when link fails. Bridge doesn't. d) PPPoE also allows you to login automatically. Bridge requires login from your system e) In PPPoE mode, gateway acts like a firewall (no open ports). In bridged mode, the system is vulnerable. f) Slight increase in speed is reported with bridging, with no explanations whatsoever. Looks like they were predestined to judge the bridged mode faster. [fsug-tvm] Re: Discontinuing Install Fests
I really find it hard to believe! Exactly one year after we started our series of installfest, every city folk interested in GNU/Linux has learned to install it themselves! Remember how many people turned up for the first installfest? Either we achieved our targets well beyond our wildest dreams, or we have seriously faltered in our pre- installfest PR jobs (No flame intended). I am interested in knowing what everyone thinks. Anyway, I am in support of this idea. No meaning in setting up an install venue if no one is going to install something there. However, for phase 2, we need some interesting activity to keep up the interest in FOSS. Any ideas as interesting as installfests? Regards, Gokul Das --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Freedom is the only law. Something like KICAD's UI. As of now, it is still a hackers' toy - not something you would call production standard. Many may disagree with me on this, but most users wont even try a design tool that requires them to touch the command prompt. That's a shame considering how good the rest of GEDA is. is nice, BUT is it possible? Why not? They created Free OS, free browsers, free media frameworks, free everything. How hard is it going to be to develop a new UI for an already well developed app stack? Remember that even in Kerala, more than enough talent is available to custom modify or develop software to meet our requirements (eg: SMC). Anyone with enough experience in GEDA and some toolkit should be able to do it (provided they have time). On the other hand, if you dont want to get your hands dirty, simply outsource the job. With small contributions from the user community, there should be enough resources to employ an IT firm to do that job (hmm, I need to ponder this!). There are a lot of firms that has the ability and willingness to do so. At this point, that seems much easier than changing the quality of education. That would require changing the mindset of an entire generation of students and teaching staff. I am not against that idea- but in practise, thats harder. Heck! I can't even get them to try Firefox- how do I convince them to use GEDA? I try my best to popularize free s/w too. But nobody cares! All they care about is whether it is easy to use. Tell them about command prompt, and all your efforts are in vain. I am not understating work of educators like Ranjith sir or David sir, but ask them how many people take genuine interest in their ideas and take over their work where they leave off. That's why, a polished UI for these apps would help. You have to admit- there are a lot of companies that sell crappy s/w with shiny UIs. Even SPICE apps that we use at college are generations behind GNUCAP etc- but they have simple UIs. Please do not take this as a deliberate criticism. I cherish work done by people like you and David sir. I always look up to them to provide guidance in my efforts. Also, I really like the idea of standardization. NES 3.6 - connection getting timed out
Hi I'm facing a performance issue with NES 3.6. I'm using NES3.6 and Jrun 2.3 and Oracle back end on Windows NT in my project. The problem starts when one of the servlets make calls to some calculation modules. The calc routines take too much time to execute (mainly because of some database calls in between) and the next page never comes out. Netscape says 'Document contains no data'. There is no error in the code. I thought its due to connection getting timed out and tried adding persistant connection timout period in NES (200-300 secs). It worked once and later it stopped working. Any idea how I can solve this issue ? All help appreciated. Vis.. Classpath should be set to your bean. I guess your bean (SimpleBean) is under a package 'hall'. Re: [Re: DB connection problem with NES/Jrun]- new issue
Thanks for the response though your answer didn't help me much. It started working after I put oracle.jar file under classpath in jrun's jsm.properties file. But now I have another issue. I'm able to run servlets, access database, read and write from database. but in one particular servlet, netscape is throwing the infamous 'Document contains no data' error. I thought It would be some database connection problem. but since my other servlets are running perfectly (using the same DB connection classes) it can't be JDBC problem, right ? When all we usually get this 'Document contains no data' error ? Any help appreciated. Vis.. Re: jsp to jsp
I think you don't need to give the userid with the URL. you can pass it as a parameter when you call aaa.jsp. its the request to the aaa.jsp that's going to be forwarded to bbb.jsp. ie, in aaa.jsp : jsp:forward page="bbb.jsp"/ and you invoke aaa.jsp as http://servername/jsp/aaa.jsp?userid=100099 As per JSP Specs, you can give parameter values using jsp:param also. jsp:forward page="bbb.jsp" jsp:param name="userid" value="adam"/ /jsp:forward (Refer JSP 1.1 Specs under 2.13.5) but I couldn't access these params in bbb.jsp. Its always returning null. Anybody's got any clue ? Vis.. I have problems when I forward userid from aaa.jsp to bbb.jsp. aaa.jsp HTML BODY % String userid = "100099";% jsp:forward page="tmp.jsp?userid="userid /BODY/HTML bbb.jsp html body % out.println("userid in bbb.jsp:"+userid); % /body /html Please help adam __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com === To unsubscribe: mailto [EMAIL PROTECTED] with body: "signoff JSP-INTEREST". Re: %@ include file =filename % problem
Liza, Check if you are referring to the bean with the same id in file2. Or problem could be with your classpath. Check if you've set it properly for the bean. Also check if you are refering file2 in file1 with proper URL. I can't think of any other reason. There is no need to put jsp:useBean in file2. We use JRUN now and are going to switch to Resin. It can act as a standalone web server with JSP1.1/Servlet2.2, but it also has built in db pooling, as well as the only servlet/jsp engine that can auto-reload classes by comparing if the source chagned. If you modify the source, it compares the source to the .class and then recompiles the source, unloads and reloads the class for you! This isn't just for servlets and beans, its for all classes. The guy who wrote Resin apparently wrote a new ClassLoader that handles this ability. I don't have all the good details, but someone told me this and their site, I think its www.goucho.com or something. Anyways..the fact that its open source and free to use (ofcourse..send the man some money for his hard work..actually its a team of them) makes it even more attractive, and the speed outdoes just about every servlet engine. == = To unsubscribe: mailto [EMAIL PROTECTED] with body: "signoff JSP-INTEREST".
