User tool crashes

2007-04-10 Thread Ankur Gulati (GR/EIL)
Hi List,

Scenario:

ARS 7.0.1 Patch 2
Database: Oracle 9i

Some times back we did a migration from 6.0.1 to 7.0.1. Few days back
the system administrator created some new groups. When the users
belonging to these new groups login to the user tool via Citrix and try
to save a record, the user tool crashes without any error message.

When we tried to associate a user from one of the new groups with an old
group which existed before the migration, it works fine but you again
reassociate it with new, it crashes the user tool again.

Regards
Ankur

PS: I saw that there is already an issue being discussed of User tool
crashing. This issue had some more things to it so I thought of starting
a new thread on this:

Remedy+LDAP (Novell eDirectory)

2007-04-10 Thread Kevin Murray
Hi All,

Environment: ARSystem 6.3 Patch 20, HPUX 11i, Oracle 9i currently using ARSystem
authentication

We are planning to implement the LDAP plugins (both AREA and ARDBC) to connect
to the corporate Novell eDirectory (Recent Version - tbc), running on separate
hardware.

Our eDirectory team are keen to understand the logic behind the supplied
plug-ins i.e what specific function calls, does it use when interacting with
eDirectory, and what attributes does it interact with?

I'm specifically interested in the AREA plugin, the ARDBC is very much specific
to what you include in the vendor form?

e.g.

Does the plugin increment the Bad Password counter attribute? In my experience
No, this is managed centrally by LDAP
Does the plugin update the last logged on attribute? In my experience no, this
is managed centrally by LDAP
Does the plugin implement password history? Don't know, but don't think it's
really relevant as the password is not set through Remedy
managed centrally again through eDirectory
Does the plugin update the loginGraceLimit? Don't know
Does the plugin update the loginGraceRemaining? Don't know

Setting-up the integration should be OK, completed it before elsewhere however
never had anyone ask me the above before. I don't think providing them with the
remedy manual/knowledge base material will work.

The documentation provided in the guides/knowledge base are all very ARSystem
centric.

The eDirectory team are also suggested we could switch in the a Novell API
solution? Has anyone done something along these lines with Remedy (instead of
using the supplied AREA/ARDBC plugins)?

Any information appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Kevin

2007-04-10 Thread Mike White
Perfect! Thanks, Axton.

Doug - thanks, too, for your suggestion. I was able to use Notepad to
enter, then capture the tab. I'd suspected that we could insert/imbed
special characters.

Matt - Solaris/Oracle are fine with it - doesn't mean anything to them.
Windows processes it on display - moving the cursor to the next tab stop.
If you try to directly enter the tab (by pressing it), it'll move you out
ot the value area where you're constructing your literal.

I had to go look up the term horizontal tab character at

talking about a normal tab. I do not think that I have ever referred
to a tab as a horizontal tab. And I am fairly certain that I have
not thought of a vertical tab. I just do not think in dot matrix
 printer languages. :)

I would think that the easiest way to insert a tab character is with
the tab key on your key board. :) The only trick would likely be that
you need to open the expand box at the end of the value field before
 you type the tab key.

If however that failed then I think I could suggest a few more ways to
 get a tab character:
) Use a Perl script(or other similar shell/script) on the command
line to print a tab character. (perl -e 'print \t;')
) If you really wanted to go out of your way you could use the
Java Scripting Plugin from the Developer community and do a similar
 statement.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard installation that warehouses all the

your project to the incident, You can make it simpler by using web services

consider a DTS link between the databases (the last one could be tricky with

Problem adding test users to version 7

2007-04-10 Thread Morrison, David A.
Good morning.

While hoping to upgrade to AR 7 this summer, I am having a strange
problem while testing version 7. I have installed the demo version of
AR 7 on a test server using MS SQL 2005. Initially it seemed to work
quite well while leaning some of the new screens. I added a few users
and groups successfully. However after a short period of evaluation the
system would not let me add any new users. I know about the demo limit
of three write licenses, however it will not allow any type of user to
be added. I can remove users and edit existing ones, but when I try to
add a new one no matter what I put in the required fields I get this
error message:

ARERR [382] The value(s) for this entry violate a unique index that has
been defined for this form.

I have checked the User form in the Admin tool, but according to Form
Properties there is no unique index??

I do a clear all fields before typing in the required data also.

I have searched in the Knowledgebase on the BMC web site and have also
searched the archives of the list, but could not find any possible
solution. I did turn on the logs but found no help there. I am not
very familiar with SQL as it appears to be some kind of possible
corruption in the database. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

It may be that oter forms are having entries created. I would suggest that you
use the standard configuration method which is to add new uers through the
People form. If the problem still occurs you will need to do AL filter and
possibly SQL logging.

Re: Capture of Original CTI of Case/Task

2007-04-10 Thread David Sanders
Hi Jase

First, you would be better having a qualification like

('OrigCTIModified?' != Yes) AND (('Category' != 'DB.Category') OR ('Type'
!= 'DB.Type') OR ('Item' != 'DB.Item'))

This qualification checks for changes in the values - your version will
equate to true if there are no transaction values, i.e. you are not making a
change.

To get the original values, you need to do a set fields action from the
database values of the current record (using 'Request ID' = $Request ID$) to
set the original values to your new fields.

Hello Listers,

I need to be able to capture the original CTI of a HelpDesk Case if it is
changed.

I thought this would be rather simple and wrote a filter using TR. Values
with the below qualification.

('OrigCTIModified?' != Yes) AND ('TR.Category' != 'Category' OR 'TR.Type'
!= 'Type' OR 'TR.Item' != 'Item') OR ('TR.Type' != 'Type' OR 'TR.Item' !=
'Item') OR  ('TR.Item' != 'Item')

***Above qual is so that if any of the three change, we can capture original
cti***

My Set Fields Action was, if the qualification is met, then set the
'OrigCTIModified' Field to Yes, so filter wouldn't fire if the CTI was
changed again.

In the same set fields action, I had already created four character fields
and had them each set to 'Orig Category = $Category$, 'Orig Type' = $Type$

and 'Orig Type' = $TYPE$. Thought I was cruising right along, did some
testing and discovered that the results I was getting in the 'Orig' fieds
were the NEW CTI values, rather than the original values. I have been
wracking my brain and can't figure out how to overcome this timing issue.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in Advance, :)

You could use a table field and set the Max Rows: value on the

You could use a direct SQL Set Field action that uses RDBMS specific

That's what I do too and I do take a look at the Share application
properties form too to make sure that all the entries that are supposed to
be there specific to that application and patch you are installing have been
created or modified..

Another test I do is if there is more than one server that we are installing
on (e.g. Dev, QA, Prod), then I make sure that I choose similar installation
options so that the object count would remain the same for all instances..
Sometimes this though is not a good way of looking at it as more often than
not many sites do have server groups for QA and Prod but none for Dev, or
the same might stand good for other such options that might lead to creation
of a couple of more forms or a few more AL's or Filters.. But in case you
have an environment where you get the luxury of installing as identical
instances, the total counts of objects like Forms, AL's, Filters etc and
comparing them does help..

Re: Capture of Original CTI of Case/Task

2007-04-10 Thread L. J. Head
You have two problems

1. Your Filter Run-If Qualification is firing on all modifications
- TR will always be $NULL$ unless the value is changing and it's changing to
something other than $NULL$...so when you are doing a compare of
'TR.Category' != 'Category' if the Category has not changed then your
qualification would then be $NULL$ != 'Category'...which would always be
trueunless Category was null...so you would want to either try
'TR.Category' != $NULL$ AND 'Category' != 'DB.Category' or you could just
drop the first part off of that qualification

2. any time you use a setfield from current screen of $Field$ you will
always get the current value. If you want to set the fields with the values
in the DB then you will need to do a setfield from that same form doing a
query where 'Request ID' = $Request ID$ and set the fields from that record
return...

Let me know if I confused you even more

Subject: Capture of Original CTI of Case/Task

**
Hello Listers,
I need to be able to capture the original CTI of a HelpDesk Case if it is
changed.
I thought this would be rather simple and wrote a filter using TR. Values
with the below qualification.

('OrigCTIModified?' != Yes) AND ('TR.Category' != 'Category' OR 'TR.Type'
!= 'Type' OR 'TR.Item' != 'Item') OR ('TR.Type' != 'Type' OR 'TR.Item' !=
'Item') OR  ('TR.Item' != 'Item')

Re: User tool abruptly closes the session.

2007-04-10 Thread Shawn Stonequist
List,
We are seeing the same issue as Girish. I do not believe this problem is
related to the Preference Server- we were on 4.5 until last September, and
we had been having this issue for at least 1 year prior to that. After
upgrading, we still see the issue. We just started using the Preference
Server, but this has not affected the frequency of the issue.

What we did notice was that our users that are on XP have never seen this
issue at all. Our users on WIN2K have this problem frequently (as many as 3
times in an hour). We aren't sure the OS is the key though, as our XP Users
don't use Remedy as much. As well, we've noticed that this occurs 95% of the
time when an Active Link's Set Fields action is run (maybe there is
something in the AL and this is only a coincidence).

Girish,
Do your XP users have this problem as well? Is it occurring when specific
actions are taken?

This is where I have seen this problem, if I do that I can expect the user

I think this could be a bug of some sort.

 We are sorry for the

This error will close the session and we have to start a new session.

The OS on the desktop is :WIN XP/WIN 2K.

This is not happening to all users. Its only struck our FLS team.

The instances are not same. This could happen during any stage of logging a

There is no problem in logging. Its only after that.

Melissa,

On ARS 6.0.3, you still need to connect to the Oracle

ar.conf (Unix) or ar.cfg (Windows) for the DB-home

have the Oracle 9i client installed.

ARERR [382] The value(s) for this entry violate a unique index that
has been defined for this form.

Re: Remedy+LDAP (Novell eDirectory)

2007-04-10 Thread Joe D'Souza
AREA basically does a validation call to the LDAP database. It doesn't
'read' the user password that is stored in LDAP but sends the authentication
info to LDAP, which responds back to the AR System on weather or not the
user credentials are valid or invalid..

ARDBC reads data from the LDAP database.

Let me try to answer some of your questions... look below for my responses..

Subject: Remedy+LDAP (Novell eDirectory)

Hi All,

Environment: ARSystem 6.3 Patch 20, HPUX 11i, Oracle 9i currently using
ARSystem
authentication

We are planning to implement the LDAP plugins (both AREA and ARDBC) to
connect
to the corporate Novell eDirectory (Recent Version - tbc), running on
separate
hardware.

Our eDirectory team are keen to understand the logic behind the supplied
plug-ins i.e what specific function calls, does it use when interacting with
eDirectory, and what attributes does it interact with?

I'm specifically interested in the AREA plugin, the ARDBC is very much
specific
to what you include in the vendor form?

e.g.

Does the plugin increment the Bad Password counter attribute? In my
experience
No, this is managed centrally by LDAP

Joe - Yes it does.. if you keep entering bad passwords, your account in the
AD will be locked out after max allowed wrong attempts

Does the plugin update the last logged on attribute? In my experience no,
this
is managed centrally by LDAP

Joe - Yes it would, but I haven't personally confirmed it. In my opinion
everytime there is a validation against the LDAP database, it is treated as
a login. This would in effect modify that attribute.

Does the plugin implement password history? Don't know, but don't think it's
really relevant as the password is not set through Remedy
managed centrally again through eDirectory

Joe - Remedy doesn't store passwords and passwords are managed only at the
AD. So there is no question about maintaining password history within
Remedy..

Does the plugin update the loginGraceLimit? Don't know
Joe - Not sure..

Does the plugin update the loginGraceRemaining? Don't know
Joe - Not sure..

Setting-up the integration should be OK, completed it before elsewhere
however
never had anyone ask me the above before. I don't think providing them with
the
remedy manual/knowledge base material will work.

The documentation provided in the guides/knowledge base are all very
ARSystem
centric.

The eDirectory team are also suggested we could switch in the a Novell API
solution? Has anyone done something along these lines with Remedy (instead
of
using the supplied AREA/ARDBC plugins)?

Any information appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Kevin

I would not recommend the class at all. I took it and spent three days
just doing the installs. The lecture was not in line with what we were
doing the lab's on as the installers took forever to complete. And this
is with brand new machines with 4GB's of memory. The class was geared
for someone that needs their hand held during an install. Plus, it was
all Windows based installs, which does nothing for someone that runs
Solaris and Sybase.

The course material consists of two thick books. We ended up doing the
last book in 1 1/2 days. I wanted more config than installing. We
did not have any time to see what this does in the lab. They need to
have this class broken up into two different classes. If they want to
continue to do it this way, then they need to somehow fake the
installs by doing it via a flash program, and have the products already
installed on the system. Applying the DSL data took a 1 1/2 days!

I know, not on your topic of getting people to go to the class, but I
would save your money for another class.

Re: Moved Date and Time to DateTime

2007-04-10 Thread Joe D'Souza
I haven't tried this but might help giving it a shot.. Create 2 display only
character fields and copy the values of the Date field and the Time field
into the character fields.. Have a 3rd display only character field and in
this one, construct the whole date string, and copy the value of this
constructed string to the Date time field..

Cheers

Have a Date field and a Time field and want to take both values and make a
DateTime field using a filter.

Re: Remedy+LDAP (Novell eDirectory)

2007-04-10 Thread Axton

The eDirectory team are also suggested we could switch in the a
Novell API solution? Has anyone done something along these lines with
Remedy (instead of using the supplied AREA/ARDBC plugins)?

You could write your own AREA plugin that uses the Novell API for all
directory calls. This would probably be the best route to accomplish
all the things your Novell people are asking, if you or they have the
skills to write the plugin. The AREA plugins are written in C, so you
would need to use the Novell C api to write the plugin.

Just keep in mind that the area plugin is a interface that implements
a specific set of calls, you can do whatever you want within these
calls (increment counter x, perform the authentication using api z,
etc.).

Hi All,

We are planning to implement the LDAP plugins (both AREA and ARDBC) to connect

The documentation provided in the guides/knowledge base are all very ARSystem
centric.

The eDirectory team are also suggested we could switch in the a Novell API

using the supplied AREA/ARDBC plugins)?

Any information appreciated.

Tom, I just took this class, and in all fairness to BMC, did not have the
same experience that you did. Our installs were pretty much done by EOD
Tuesday, and we had some time left over Friday after going through the
config stuff. By not installing the DSL until the second (or subsequent)
application install, it really sped things up. I really think a lot of it
comes down to the instructor, and when the course was/is taken - it's in a
constant state of improvement.

I would like to see some UNIX environments at least discussed more, too, but
that's hard to do in a classroom setting.

Christian, I just recently took this class, too, and while I think you would
have enough to implement CMDB, they were admittedly light on the

Env: ARS 7 ITSM V7, Windows 2003 Servers (3 of them in Server Group)

 Issue:
Log in through the User tool and hit the load balancer. Load balancer
quick passes them off to 1 of 3 ARS servers. No problem. If user remains
IDLE for about 10 minutes and then tries to do anything they must wait about
35 to 40 seconds to get a response from ARS.

The developers on the ARS side have captured server side log files and
confirm that the delay is not on the ARS side. It takes 35-40 seconds for
anything to hit ARS and when it does it completes immediately.

 Any thoughts are appreciated.

Re: ARS 7.0.1, CMDB 2.0.1 and version 7 apps...

2007-04-10 Thread Guillaume Rheault
I would like to go one step further than just checking for object counts and
log files. It would be really nice and helpful to have a definitions file of
the vanilla module, or combination of modules, and being able to do an object
comparison, for instance with the Migrator tool, or some other similar tool
than can compare workflow. This is exactly what I did to certify a CMDB
upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1 patch 2, I believe, last year during a project: I had
requested support the definitions files for a vanilla CMDB at the latest
patched version at that time and support was very kind and helpful and provided
me with the definitions file, and I used Migrator to compare the actual CMDB
workflow. I did find a couple of filter actions that did not match exactly,
even though the log files did not show any errors, neither the HTML file. Of
course I could have installed a vanilla CMDB in another environment, and do the
comparison there, but it was just easier and more formal to get the definitions
from support to be able to prove to management that the CMDB upgrade was
successful (after fixing the couple of filters that did not match). So to
summarize, it would be really helpful if, specially for upgrades, there was an
automagic method to compare the code (workflow) to make sure everything that
should be there is there. Maybe a stripped down version of the migrator could
be used for such purpose and be part of the install/upgrade process...

But in case you
have an environment where you get the luxury of installing as identical
instances, the total counts of objects like Forms, AL's, Filters etc and
comparing them does help..

any errors, neither the HTML file. Of course I could have installed a
vanilla CMDB in another environment, and do the comparison there, but it was
just easier and more formal to get the definitions from support to be able
to prove to management that the CMDB upgrade was successful (after fixing
the couple of filters that did not match). So to summarize, it would be
really helpful if, specially for upgrades, there was an automagic method to
compare the code (workflow) to make sure everything that should be there is
there. Maybe a stripped down version of the migrator could be used for such
purpose and be part of the install/upgrade process...

Hi Carey,

It's actually my case. Yeah I had followed ya advice. I look for the active

BAMM..it works then. Thanks for the pointers.

Shweta,

Make sure you altered the correct view.

Trace the workflow. Verify that the active link opens the form with
a view. Check that view for it's display settings.

Another way to verify that you have the right view is to move a
field on the view. If you see the field in the new location then you
also know that you have the right view too.

Unable to display out-of-the-box flashboard-ARERR[623] Authentica tion failed -

2007-04-10 Thread Siti Hawa Bee SHAIK FARID

My dear listers,

After installing the mid-tier, I set the same Mid-Tier Administration
Password at the followings :
(1) Server Information -Connection setting in admin tool,
(2) In Mid tier Remedy Configuration Tool- AR Server Setting - Admin
Password

When I relogin to Remedy User, all those flashboard at the side of the
Helpdesk console encountered these msgs
ARERR[623] Authentication failed.

When I change back item (1) and (2) above to blank password, then the
flashboard work.

It's not advisable to leave the Mid-Tier Admin password blank, am I right?
But when I set the password, then the flashboard don't works. Is there any
other steps that I missed?

Can anyone advice how to resolve this issue?

Dear Axton,

I had actually leaved it blank first cuz somehow I just dun feel right in
editing the file directly with the password.

And the part you mentioned 'If you do modify the files directly, you need to
signal the owning process to reread the new config values. This is
typically done with arsignal for arserver and a kill for emaild.' , what
does this signal refer to?

By the way I noticed that if there's a password, normally in the .conf or in
emaildaemon.properties, the password field will not display the exact
password in the file am I right? The password will be in some form of
asterisk or encrypted characters.

Will reinstallation of AR Email works? Will there be any implication if I
were to reinstalled AR email again or reinstall AR Email with the patch?

When I said signal, I was referring to posix signals and the arsignal (which
relates to arserver):
http://www.jaluna.com/doc/c5/html/Overview/x5408.html
http://www.lynuxworks.com/products/posix/signals.php3

This will not apply if you are in a windows environment. In windows, you
get 1 signal, and that's the stop button in the Services console.

YMMV with the different remedy programs as far as their signal handling (e.g.,
eie only responds to a signal 9).

You can reinstall the email engine, but keep in mind it will overwrite the
defs that relate to the email engine. Not a problem if you haven't changed
anything on those forms.

http://arswiki.org/projects/arapi/browser/releases/solaris701p1/include/arstruct.h#L830
http://arswiki.org/projects/arapi/browser/releases/solaris701p1/include/arstruct.h#L836

#define AR_RESERV_EMAIL_MSG_MAILBOX_ID 18093L
#define AR_RESERV_EMAIL_MSG_SEND_MSG 18099L

Odd thing, in arstruct.h, both of these fields have the comment /* reused */.

For the java out of memory errors, you need to increase the heap size
in the emaild.sh script.

What version/patch are you coming from?

Re: Email issues - on migration

2007-04-10 Thread Axton

A stretch, but the fields that you are getting the invalid rel
operator; when you import a def, you can't (easily) change the data
type of a field. Grab the portion of the def for those 2 fields and
see if the data types match that in your forms. The import would have
failed, maybe partially, and the data type would be wrong. The reused
comment in the header files further leads me down this train of
thought.

Re: .net Utilities on ARSWiki.org

2007-04-10 Thread Gareth Oliver
Very useful - two apps one for Delete existing entry, one for Modifying
existing entry.

Question - does anyone have a sample application that does a Query for a record
based on a qualification, then a modification of that record.

Thanks

I wanted to announce a set of .net utilities hosted on ARSWiki. Many
thanks to Stephen Heider for releasing these under an open source
license and adding these to the ARSWiki site.

http://arswiki.org/projects/dotnetutil

If you want to learn .net, contribute to these .net utilities, or add
additional .net utilities to the site, reference the link above for
information.

That change in setting looks like it relates to a setting in the
EmailDaemon.properties called
com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.MailboxPollingUnitsIsMinutes... I've just
installed a new server, and this flag is set to True.
