RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Tavares of Agua de Pau

2010-12-29 Thread Bruce A. Tavares

Cheri,

How can I look up their marriage, [Jose Pedro Tavares and Elena Ignocencia do
Coracao de Jesus] in the Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores? You said that you
found the marriage. I'd love to be able to take a look at that.

I'm gonna take your advice and look from 9 months on after the birth of my
great grandfather. I'd love to find some info on his brother, Pedro Tavares,
who according to Joao's obituary, lived in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. That's
about a 30 minute ride from me. Most of my leads come from that obituary from
1940. I assume that Joao and Pedro immigrated to Massachusetts together.

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Btazz,

Ooo! I forgot Sao Miguel is coming online. Thanks for looking Marcio!

Btazz, I'll do this line by line for you. Even though you had it translated,
you'll have to learn how to do these.
Keywords: Dates (numbers and months), names (they usually jump out at you) -
the name of the baby, Joao is preceded by filho legitimato (a daughter is filha
legitimata). Just look for the longer slanted letters of f, l, h, l, g about a
third of the way down. You'll also learn to pick out the place because you are
already holding that roll of film in your hand. So the next baptism you find,
post what you have picked out. The more you "translate" the more you will be
able to pick out. They follow the same format in this time period.

Here's the word list:
https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Portuguese_Genealogical_Word_List
The paleography (handwriting) is in the same article, scroll down (in 4 parts).

1) On the 30 day of the month of June of the year of
2) 1000 800 70 and 3 in this church Par-
3) ish of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos of Agua de Pau
4) Council of the vila of Lagoa, Diocese of Angra, I bap-
5) tized solemnly an individual of the sex
6) masculine to whom I give the name of Joao, and that he was born (born is
hyphenated here)
7) born in this Freguesia, at 3 hours of the afternoon, of the
8) day 12 of the current month and year, son legiti-
9) mate of Jose Pedro Tavares, worker, and of Ele-
10) na Ignocencia do Coracao de Jesus, of the occupation
11) domestic, natives, received (that means married), parishioners, and
12) living on the Travessa do Valle verdo (that's the name of the street) of
this
13) Freguesia, grandson paternal of Pedro Tavares and
14) Miguelina de Jesus, and maternal of Joao de Mel-
15) lo Bizarro and Thomazia da Encarnacao.
16) For godfather the Reverend Luciano Fran-
17) cisco de Mederios, curator of this parish and god-
18) mother Maria da Estrella, single, seam-
19) stress, of whom all I know properly...
Btazz, this is where I stop translating. I can only loosely translate the rest.
It says stuff like it was read back to them and they answered (confirmed) what
was written, it was written in duplicate (one book you are reading the other
went to the Vatican), if the godparents could read & write, etc. Era ut supra
is Latin for "It was as above" or something like that. Then the priest and the
witness sign.

Now there's 2 different ways you could proceed. You could go over to the
marriages (a different format) to build your pedigree from there. However,
since you are new to "translating," I would recommend that you go ahead in the
film (online images) to March of 1874 in the baptisms (9 months after the birth
of Joao). Women are not likely to have have babies 9 months apart, but there
is no other reference point to start without missing a baptism of a baby.
You'll need the word list so you can recognize the dates.

Note: Your Elena may also appear as Helena.

I'm not entirely sure (the images are incorrect online - says 1870, 1871, 1872,
then back to 1871) but I think Joao was the first baby born to this couple. I
did find the marriage so I know which way to tell you to look for the other
baptisms. That's why I'm telling you to go forward to March 1874 and look for
more babies born to this couple.

Good luck,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Requesting a Nordeste, SM baptismo look up (1888)

2010-12-29 Thread Jesse Pacheco
I was wondering if anyone with easier access to a FHC than I have (over
an hour drive, scheduling conflicts) could do a (hopefully!)
not-too-difficult look-up for me.

I don't know the church, but when I looked it up I saw that Nordeste
only had Sao Jorge, so I am assuming that is the one?

I am looking for Joao Pacheco, born 9 Mar 1888 in Nordeste to Jose
Pacheco and Rosalina (possibly Luiz). I am trying to figure out if
confusion has occurred with names in this group of people so that I can
confidently continue my research in another branch. If someone could
check this information, it would be greatly appreciated! If this is more
work than I realized, I apologize. I only ask if this would be a
relatively quick task.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Nordeste Philharmonic from 1950 - 1958

2010-12-29 Thread Altino DeMelo
This may be a longshot. The city of Nordeste in São Miguel has a
philharmonic band called 'Filarmónica Eco Edificante de Vila
Nordeste'. My father played in that band between 1950 - 1958. If
anybody has any photographs of this band during this period, could you
please write me?

I found a blog through a search of Facebook with a current member. I
asked her if historic photos of the band existed in her comment
section. (again another longshot but i am awaiting a response for
now).

I also found an address for the band through an online search. (i'll
wait to see if i get any responses here first though).

Hi Herb,

It's possible that you may be related in some sense to my Melo's. My
Melo's in Nordeste came from the Melo's in Ribeira Grande and Ribeira
das Tainhas, Ponta Garca.

You may have grown up in Nordeste and your family may have known mine.
In fact, i wouldn't be surprised at all if our relatives were in each
others photos (matanca's, festas etc). My paternal Grandmother
(Senhorinha Raposo de Medeiros) was invited after she married Antonio
de Melo Correia to live in Nordeste by her parents (José Raposo de
Medeiros and Rosa Amália de Jesus).

Senhorinha's family (Grandparents, cousins etc) were from the area
Fazenda. (right beside Nordeste). Senhorinha had numerous siblings
(Ernesto, José, Manuel, Serafim, Jacinto and Maria da Luz [all
Raposo]).

My Grandfather's house was right across from the Casa da Trabalho. He
had 6 children:
José Rapose de Melo, Urbano Raposo de Melo, Maria Alda Raposo de Melo,
Maria de Conceição de Melo, Altino Raposo de Melo and Eduardo Raposo
de Melo.

Wow, right church, wrong person.

When my cousin, Sister Hilda Correia, took me to Holy Rosary in Providence,
she told me my great-grandfather married there (he didn't. They married at
St. John the Baptist in New Bedford). Sr. Hilda was friends with Father
Paiva. They had served together somewhere.

I couldn't figure out how Sister Hilda was so far off about the marriage
church. It wasn't my great-grandfather that married there. It was his
SISTER.

Here we go with my family putting the story on the wrong person! LOL.
There's always a grain of truth in there.

BT,

It's hard to get any information on any living person in any country now, due
to privacy laws.

You'll be able to view the records in the archives at Horta up to about 1910.
But that probably won't help you much.

You might be able to go to Cedros and ask around for anyone who might know of
your family.  If you don't speak Portuguese, ask for an English speaking taxi
driver.  If you want his services for 4 hours, ask what he makes in a 4 hour
time period and offer him that to take you to Cedros and act as your
translator.  (Or 6 hours or whatever).  Some people on this list have kept the
names of their taxi drivers who have been of assistance to them.  If so, I'm
sure they will post the info or contact you directly.

Good luck!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Silveira-Fontes (Faial)

2010-12-29 Thread btkinnear
Hello

I am planning a trip to Faial in May and while doing some research, I recently
found this group and thought I might be able to get some information on my
paternal grandfather's side from Cedros. I have found quite a bit of
information, but recently discovered he had two sisters that never came to the
states - Maria Emilia Fontes Ramos (DOB 1894) and Filomena Fontes Furtado who
stayed in Cedros. My grandfather's name was Joao Silveira Fontes (DOB 1891)
and his parents were Jose Silveira and Ana Clara Do Coracao de Jesus (DOB
1862). Maria apparently had one stepson and 10 children. Filomena had a son,
Jose Silveira Furtado aka Ramadinha, who apparently still lives in Faial.

If anyone knows of this family's decendants,I would love to contact them and
meet them when I visit in May. Any other information on my family (living or
deceased), I would greatly appreciate.

Is there an on-line source to review the birth and marriage records of my
great granparents, Jacinto do Rego Baldaia, and his wife, Maria Carolina?

Thanks,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] "borrow" on Ancestry

2010-12-29 Thread Besotes

Hello Shirl,

Some members choose to keep their sites private at the request of living
family members. Mine is private, but I do have 13 family members who have
access to my family tree (and anyone else who's related may have access to
it as well). Only two have access to edit information - one being my Mother
and the other a true researcher like myself. All the rest just want to
"see" information.

Typically, when I come across a tree that's private, I shoot the member an
email and we speak back and fourth to see if we have a true connection.
I've been successful several times - only once I can think of had we not
been related (but we chose to believe maybe down the road we may be
connected do to so many similarities of names and places our family had been
over the many years).

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] "borrow" on Ancestry

2010-12-29 Thread Shirley Sereque
I haven't had the horror stories some of you have had, but I do have my
ancestry.com information public. I found two fourth cousins, a
granddaughter of a second cousin who is quite elderly and hasn't given
me much information, and someone researching the Benarus side who turns
out to be a distant cousin. Can't get very far on my Seriqui side,
though, although some in this group have told me a few stories which is
wonderful.
While looking at another's information, I discovered that they had the
parents born after their children! I wrote to the person whose ancestry
line this is and reminded them of the goof. :-) Now another person
has my Kozik (Austrian) side on their site so I did just write to them
asking how "we" are related. I always wondered why people kept their
site private while they could access the public sites without feeling
guilty!

Eric, I too verify information I gather from out there. Someone took

never heard of as that branch in our tree had lost contact. Always
pros and cons.

Linda,

Keeping the tree private can prevent some of this. Since you

control who sees the tree, only those you allow in can borrow
things. My reason for having the tree up is to gather distant
family members who are researching, so I'll put up with the
borrowing and leave my tree public.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Genealogy Conference in Utah, 2011: CHANGE OF DATES

2010-12-29 Thread Cheri Mello
Our host hotel, the Salt Lake Plaza in Salt Lake City, Utah wound up with a
problem with the number of guest rooms to sleep in. They already know that
they are going to run out based on the number of groups that want to stay at
the Plaza hotel. So we had to move our dates.

NEW DATES: Monday, June 27, 2011 through Friday, July 1, 2011.

Details with the registration to follow next week.

see if your library can borrow it from one in California.

David,

I have a book that I purchased many years ago by Norberto da Cunha Pacheco
called "Graciosa, as tradicoes e as paisagens de uma ilha". I Googled it on
Googles book site and the book is available from many libraries in California,
Toronto & Ottowa. There are more, but for some reason my computer would not
take me to the next page! Anyway, there are lots of pics in the books:
postcards, real pictures etc.. Very little text.

Cheri et al: You and I have been out of touch for several years now, but I
thought I would chime in here with my De Mello's in Nordeste since I at
still unable to go any further back than my great great grandparents there.

Manuel de Mello, N.S. Anuncicao, Achadinha, Sao Migeul, married to Maria da
Estrella, of N.S. Conceicao, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel.

I have no dates at all for them, however, one of their sons (my great
grandfather) was Joao de Mello Faulha (or Fautho?), born/baptized May 1841,
N.S. Conceicao, Ribeira Grande.

I would certainly be grateful for any assistance in identifying them or
others in the family that goes back further in the line.

Cheers and best wishes for the new year to all, Duane De Mello
