[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with margin note
I am curious about the margin note under Manuel's name. Does it indicate that he married in 1875? And where? I have found his passport application in 1880 that indicates he was married at that time, so I believe he married before he emigrated to Hawaii. Manuel, right side, bottom entry http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOROQUE-B-1850- 1860/SMG-PD-SAOROQUE-B-1850-1860_item1/P97.html Thanks for any help, Erica Botelho -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA topic - for users of GedMatch.com
Some people have been talking about an email they got from GedMatch.com. I did not receive that email but when I logged in, saw a few things differently in reference to the email that some people got. Basically they are allowing a new feature, or new features which are triangulation and a tool that allows you to build a person's genome based on other family members. In order to get access to these new features, you would have to donate at least $10 which would give you access to these special additional features for a month. If you see after you log in, that under your name it says Tier 1, you'll know that at the bottom of the page you have access to those special utilities. Since my father isn't alive, I would be able to reconstruct his genome (partially) by using his sister's DNA that I managed to extract and my own and my brothers once I get them tested. I would probably be able to use any other relative on my father's side but then you tend to get a less accurate genome of that person. It's best to get the children of that one person. Getting the siblings could be another alternative but then you're really leaving it up to randomness. [AZORES-Genealogy] Price Reduction - Transferring from AncestryDNA (Ancestry.com) and 23andMe (v.3 chip) to Family Tree DNA
Hi Cheri, Maybe, you can clarify, something for me. I want to test my DNA. Ancestry,is still advertising, but I have seen posts, that they dumped results and no longer going to offer DNA testing. So, I'm torn between Ancestry, which I belong to or Family Tree. Have, you heard about any upcoming sales? Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA matches that link the Azores to Mainland Portugal
My goal Doug is through DNA to obtain clues about the ancestral Village, Town or City of my ancestors prior to settling in the Azores I predict interest will increase in this area and there will be some format to share and discuss this information with others that are interested. I have some good clues already that indicate that my direct paternal ancestor that settled on Pico in the 1500's was from Porto, it is important that more people of Azorean ancestry test to give us more clues but we will get a clearer picture when more Portuguese from the Mainland test On Saturday, October 18, 2014 5:33:01 PM UTC-7, Doug da Rocha Holmes wrote: Antonio, Your point is excellent. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Price Reduction - Transferring from AncestryDNA (Ancestry.com) and 23andMe (v.3 chip) to Family Tree DNA
Nancy P, There are 4 types of testing for DNA on the market and 3 major DNA testing companies for DNA. 1) Y-DNA: Traces the father's father's father's line (top of the pedigree chart only). You must be a male or have a male relative take this test for you. Only Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) offers this test. 2) mtDNA: Traces the mother's mother's mother's line (bottom of the pedigree chart only). Both males and females can take this test. The information obtained is mainly anthropological in nature. It is best used in conjunction with another researcher. For example, if you and I thought that our mother's mother's mother's were sisters and we both took an mtDNA test and it matched, then yes, we can assume that the ancestors were sisters. Only FTDNA offers this test and only FTDNA offers to test the Full Genomic Sequence (which people should do it they ever hope to make a match with mtDNA). Actually, FTDNA was the only company that ever offered to test the Full Sequence. 3) Autosomal DNA X Chromosome: These 2 come together as a package deal. This covers ALL the lines of the testee back about 200 years. Family Tree DNA, Ancestry, and 23andMe offer this type of testing. The 3 major companies: 1) 23andMe: They were founded by Anna Wozniacki (former wife of Sergey Brin, one of the two Google founders) and Linda Avey. Anna's focus was medical. 23andMe offered a lot of health information. The technology that they used was created by Illumina on their chip. This chip also contained ancestry information. So 23 and Me offered both health and ancestry, but most people flocking to 23andMe were testing for the health results. The FDA decided that 23andMe should not be selling health information to the American public and they made 23andMe stop. 23andMe is attempting to comply with the FDA ruling so they can resume their health portion. They have just started launching their product in Canada and elsewhere in countries that don't have a problem with their people knowing if they may be predisposed to something. Just know that when signing up for 23andMe that you allow your DNA to be used for medical research. And they don't have to tell you if they are using it for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, asthma, etc. I believe that if they do use your results for medical research that you are anonymous, but I'm not sure. I'd have to check on that. 2) Ancesty.com: Ancestry started off as a book publisher back in the day. Then with the advent of digitization, they really revolutionized the way that we research by digitizing records and making them available to us any time of the day with a subscription. In my opinion, they should have stopped there. It's what they do best. But they saw the power in DNA and attempted to buy various DNA companies so they could get a big database quickly. They bought out Relative Genetics, obtained Sorenson, and I don't remember who else. They did NOT make all those results public however, but claimed them in their numbers (both my dad and I tested at Sorenson and our DNA never showed up in Ancestry). When signing up for Ancestry, just know that you sign your DNA over to them. It's theirs. Not yours. They can do whatever they want with it. So when Ancestry decided that they were no longer interested in Y-DNA or mtDNA testing, they dumped the product and destroyed the samples. It was their DNA and they could do what they please. Kalani and I were both pulled by Ancestry last June. We both signed a non-disclosure agreement with Ancestry. Just let me say this: The way Ancestry handled the Y mtDNA; the way I've seen their reps at genealogy shows, knowing that they own your DNA, and having some knowledge of what is coming down the pike, it would be a very cold day in hell before I gave them my DNA. Oh yes, and they are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and must please those shareholders and make them money. 3) Family Tree DNA: Bennett Greenspan, founder of FTDNA had read the Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings DNA study. He wondered if DNA could help solve the mystery of a branch of his family in California matching some people in Argentina. After twisting Dr. Michael Hammer's arm at the University of Arizona to test the DNA, Dr. Hammer gave Bennett the idea to start a DNA testing company because Dr. Hammer got phone calls from crazy genealogists all the time. Bennett founded FTDNA in 2000 for the sole purpose of genealogy. They used the Hammer lab at the University of Arizona until a few years ago. FTDNA eventually built their own lab. With FTDNA, you own your DNA. You test your DNA and find out that Charles Manson is your 3rd cousin, twice removed, you can have FTDNA destroy your sample and remove your results from their database. They are not publicly traded. They have us admins helping them (we are all volunteer). By listening to their admins and customers, we have been able to push the geneticists to make new discoveries, find new markers, discover new

I am also writing to announce that GEDmatch has recently instituted a program called Tier 1 that will provide new tools, many of which we could not previously make available due to their expense and large data requirements. Tier 1 will also provide financial stability necessary for our rapid growth. While there is a membership fee of $10 per month for Tier 1, please be assured that our basic services will remain outside of Tier 1 and will remain free to all users. In appreciation for your previous donations, we are making Tier 1 available to you at no expense for a limited period of time. Your free membership in Tier 1 begins now and will remain in effect for the number of months equal to the total donations you have made to GEDmatch since January 1, 2013, divided by $10. If you are receiving this email, you should also see a new box on your GEDmatch home page titled 'Tier 1'. It contains links to programs that are not available to non-Tier 1 GEDmatch users. Since Tier 1 memberships are based on email addresses it is possible that we may be missing some of your donations if you have used another email address in making a donation or mailed a check during this period. Sure I would like to see your article. I think people will become more comfortable with DNA testing over time it is already is a household word there is even an ad on TV now for some headphones called DNA. DNA testing for those interested in genealogy is catching on rather quickly now, perhaps a little slower in the Portuguese community because our people tend to save their money and aren't likely to spend on DNA testing unless they understand the benefits. Hi all, I may also help with my side of the plan.. Those that use tombo.pt must have seen the FTDNA link that I recently added to the left sidebar in the site. I'm an affiliate of FTDNA, meaning that any sales lead that I generate will earn me 5% of the 'sale'. That is, if you buy a test in FTDNA after following that link, and that test costs you $100, FTDNA pays me $5. I believe that any serious genealogist researching in Portugal visits my site several times per week. It's a bit different for the Azores (considering there's only 3 or 4 parishes remaining, and you get the news of their availability faster via this group), and Madeira (where there hasn't been any news to report in more than a year). I'm in the process of making a front-page article (in Portuguese) explaining what Genetic Genealogy is, with links back to FTDNA. It will both help me personally, as I'm 100% mainland and I have 1-2 significant FF matches, and financially (running the site costs money, not to mention the time I put in it). If it works, we should see some more matches popping up. João C. Ventura http://tombo.pt/en On Sunday, 19 October 2014 18:40:30 UTC+2, Doug da Rocha Holmes wrote: Antonio, I share your goal. But if we are to have any chance at finding family connections to mainland people, DNA is the only way. I will point this out in the Portuguese Genealogy group on Facebook, where we have about 250 or so members and growing (but not growing as fast as the Azores group) and I think it could have some impact. Similarly, I recently was invited to join a Facebook group of people with Madalena, Pico ancestry and found I am related to them all (over 100 members of that group) and slowly working on convincing them to test. The answer is always to get more to test, so that's what I work on. Cheri, I have looked at a link about the Beleza study but I haven't noticed the Y-DNA STR Markers listed. I have attached the link perhaps I'm missing something. Didn't realize that I could look at the STR Markers from the samples from that study. Perhaps someone is aware of a different link containing more detailed information. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10./j.1529-8817.2005.00221.x/full -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. It has to be 1878 as that is the year of the baptism. The baptism is in the month of August of 1878 and the birth was in the month of July is what I am seeing in this record, so it would have been hard for him to die in 1868. Sorry for what be an obvious question, but I'm new to reading records myself and need a little concurrence. Thank you!
