[brlcad-devel] GSOC Web development project: Online Geometry Viewer Backend
Hi, My name is Shubham Chauhan, and am a computer science second year undergraduate studying in Indraprastha Institute of Information and Technology, New Delhi, India. I know its too late but I am really interested in working under this project. I have sound experience with web development (and the required pre-requisites), and want to develop my skills during the course of the project. I have a good knowledge about PHP, HTML and CSS and I think I can pull it off. I am really curious and excited to make an industry level interface for viewing the geometric .g files. I have experience with the CAD software (how and where it is used, applications etc.), and have also seen AutoCAD. I would love to get associated with the organization not only for GSOC but also for long-term purposes. I'll start working on the proposal as soon as possible, please guide me about your expectations from the project and the GSOC proposal. -- Regards Shubham Chauhan 2013099 B.Tech CSE -- Dive into the World of Parallel Programming The Go Parallel Website, sponsored by Intel and developed in partnership with Slashdot Media, is your hub for all things parallel software development, from weekly thought leadership blogs to news, videos, case studies, tutorials and more. [brlcad-devel] GSOC Web development project: Online Geometry Viewer Backend
@Isaac Kamga Thanks a lot, I was looking into these links already, thanks for assuring me that I am on the right path. Yes it is late, but I am trying to dive into the project as deep as possible, mainly focusing on the ideology and my vision about the project. Which is based on sites like behance.net (sharing and showcasing graphic design). I want to make the project on these lines. Since I am in to graphic design as well, I had a few creatives about the project as well. The Viewer should not merely remain just a viewer but a social platform for people to showcase their designs and may be act as a social link among people. Something like: I made this Iron Man design and I upload it here. Now Stark Industries find my designs on this platform, they contact me and recruit me :D. [brlcad-devel] GSOC: OGV Project
I have submitted my proposal and am working on submitting a PR for the project, and will submit in the coming week, as soon as possible. Almost done working on omniAuth for OGV webapp. I had a request though. I wanted few sample .g files for testing purposes. Please give a link for download or a source asap. [brlcad-devel] GSOC'15 OGV; Pull Requests
I am constantly working on additional features and small bugs, identifying new ones, and submitting PRs. Till now I have submitted 3 PRs (2 before Monday and 1 today) on github repository. I have also added their information in the comment section under my proposal at GSOC website. I have also learned a great deal about the working of the web app, and the tools used (mainly meteor and mongodb). I started a bit late but I am catching up as fast as possible. Submitting more pull requests after this might be of no use now, since the deadline has also passed. But I will continue to find new bugs (I am not sure to mention them in the comments section now). So please review/comment. Your support will be highly appreciated at this moment. [brlcad-devel] GSoC'15: OGV Project Selection and Division of Work
Hi, First of all thank you for selecting my proposal for GSoC'15. It's a great opportunity for me to grow and develop my skills and contribute to the society. I see that we have two students under the same OGV Project which is a great thing for the project to develop at a fast pace. I think we should discuss how we are planning to go with the project, coordinating among the two of us, changing project timeline and aims. We would need to divide the TODO list, making a clear cut division of work, finalizing our proposals. [brlcad-devel] Model Viewer OGV
I was working on the model viewer of OGV (that specific page where the model is viewed). I wanted to get some inputs as to how we should change/upgrade that specific page, as far as back-end is concerned. What I have done is - made the model movement (through cursor) really smooth. - Added colors to our models (which is completely random, will change once you hit refresh) - Added 2 button functions that 1). adds grid and axes over the model 2). adds a layer of wire-frame over the model Inputs needed regarding: How can user viewing be made more nice? Also I mailed *brlcad[at]mac.com <http://mac.com>* about the completion of my first milestone. Please reply to that thread as well. -- Regards Shubham Chauhan 2013099 B.Tech CSE -- ___ BRL-CAD Developer mailing list brlcad-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/brlcad-devel
[brlcad-devel] [OGV] Colour in models
I upload the *.g files, view them and I get no colors. I need to understand how can I read the color information about the model from the .g files. We need to read those attributes so that we can store it in a separate object and apply to the scene on the web-app. I don't have any previous knowledge about mged and how the conversions take place, and how color attributes are stored. Please guide me through this. -- Regards Shubham Chauhan 2013099 B.Tech CSE -- ___ BRL-CAD Developer mailing list brlcad-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/brlcad-devel
[brlcad-devel] [OGV]: Thumbnail Handling, Colors and Editing rights to the repo
1. @Inder, can you brief me about handling thumbnails of model files in OGV. The architecture is a bit unclear. It'll be better if you could provide me an example such as. Accessing (let's say deleting) a particular thumbnail of a given model file. 2. Also, I haven not yet got a clear picture about how to add color of .g models while rendering on OGV. I asked harman as well but he could not help. I have read a few resources and understood the big picture about the working of mged and g-obj but am still unable to capture color properties from the model. I searched for certain command options (for the above) but didn't find any satisfactory results. Note: This thing is stalling my progress. I need help. Everything else is going just fine. Maybe someone from the core team could help. 3. @brlcad: In reference to my previous personal mail to you (cc: deepak), me and Deepak really need editing rights to the repo. It has been 2 weeks and OGV has undergone quite a few changes. Its getting tough to coordinate between both of us. There has been no activity on my first PR that was about logging in OGV. The more this thing gets delayed, the more work are we adding to both me and deepak (which includes, resolving merge conflicts, integrating front/back-end etc.) We tried talking about this on IRC 1-2 times but couldn't. OGV is new and changing really fast, that's why I thought instead of submitting patches/PRs this method would be great. I could have made a separate repository which could have been common for me and deepak, but that would also involve a lot of unnecessary delay. Please look into this ASAP. -- Regards Shubham Chauhan -- ___ BRL-CAD Developer mailing list brlcad-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/brlcad-devel

I already did this part shortly after sending this mail, so no worries about this. I was able to delete and update thumbnails without any problems. Thanks > Hmm, we need some experienced BRL-CAD user for this. Yes I would need help in that. Any help is appreciated. Also, I was going through dat.GUI that allows real time changing of view of uploaded models, and if we can achieve this, that would be great. I tried adding this to the meteor app, but due to some reason I was unable to do that. Although I have had a little experience with dat.GUI in the past, but have not used it in any framework as such. Maybe you can look into dat.GUI and comment on what to do about it and using it with the framework. dat.GUI will come as a great tool for OGV users to look at their model with different attributes of their model changed. I will be trying to achieve it this week, which will make the model_viewer.js complete. > Till you get the access, I have created another branch named GSOC2015, can > you make new pull requests to that branch Sounds great. I'll do this around friday this week. Re: [brlcad-devel] [OGV] .g file conversion error message
I think you'll have to check "cfs_uploader.js" file for that functionality, on the client side. There is this throwNotification( "File Uploaded, and will appear in file manager after it's converted"); line, but for the opposite thing, i.e. when nothing gets uploaded there is throwError(err.reason); ^ which might have some problems. This is just on top of my head and somewhere to start from. You can try changing err.reason to some actual string and check. Also you can search on how to display server errors to the client side in meteor, some way to connect /server/cfs_uploader.js and /client/views/cfs_uploader.js I'll definitely look into it more closely. [brlcad-devel] OGV: Backend Progress Update
First of all, really sorry for missing the meeting on IRC the other day. This mail is regarding my progress on working with backend on OGV. 1). *Login:* I made an account on gmail by the name ogv.mai...@gmail.com for configuring omniAuth and mailgun accounts. I worked on email Verification and reset/forget password mails (using mailgun). I also added omni-Auth functionality for google and github (left facebook due to account issues). The backend code for omniAuth is ready and working, but needs to be configured by brlcad accounts (after deployment). 2).*Feedback* Made a separate feedback page. Implemented mailing to the developer directly using formspree.io. There are some issues in formspree validations in safari browser, so maybe I'll have to change the working, remove formspree, and use default forms, and mailgun back end. 3).*Edit info of Model* Added a field for "category" (pre-defined categories) in the form, which will be stored in the model-document as an array. Earlier user was unable to update any information regarding the model, which has been enabled. The user can now delete uploaded models as well. On deletion, previous thumbnails also gets deleted. Same goes for when you update a thumbnail. This particular part had many other bugs regarding file-storing (thumbnails being stored repeatedly), and routing problems, which have been resolved. 4).*Model Viewer* Added dat.GUI library enabling the user to view his models with different attributes being changed and seeing its effects in real-time. These attributes include shininess, transparency, opacity, ambient, emissive, wireframe+model, only wireframe and wireframe line width. Need to work on changing background color through dat.GUI. 5).*Follower/following format for users* I have made user profile pages, that show info about the user and his uploaded models (with decent front-end). A working FOLLOW & UN-FOLLOW button that pushes/pulls user Id's in/from an array inside the user document. The user only sees the model-uploads made by the user he is following. The user can see popular models as well. Need to make an intelligent newsfeed. A basic model for a social platform has been setup. A few bugs have been resolved, while there are a few new ones that need to be taken care of. -- Don't Limit Your Business. Reach for the Cloud. I have opened up pull requests in the master branch and the gsoc2015 branch as well by the name 'backend'. The merge conflicts that might appear will be really less (most likely in the packages folder). I don't think it will take much of a time. Also merging is really important because my backend work requires urgent frontend finishing. Also, @Inder, if you have some time, please read the mail by the subject "OGV: Color in models" (in particular Sean's reply). The very recent one. Can you help me out in that. It's impossible to provide ready to merge pull requests. We can't see what's causing the conflicts. These conflicts will arise between front-end and backend work as well (and not only front-end vs master and backend vs master). Merge conflicts will need to be resolved. It saved a file by the name get_comb in the present working directory with some info, but the process terminated midway with the error message as: invalid command name "" It would be great if you could devote some time in clearing this out on priority. same things happen with wmater command while trying on the terminal. No. You'll find BRL-CADs code on sourceforge. Unless you are looking for the OGV project. BRL-CADs OGV (Online geometry Viewer) repo is on github. Re: [brlcad-devel] Clarification to query.
tldr; let's aim to make OGV a finished product by iterating on the present work product. A lot of features in OGV have already been incorporated including authentication (including 3rd party logins), authorization, dashboard features, a variety of views to choose from for the models, and a foundation for sharing and following the models and design owners (which btw includes comments, likes, following etc.). I sincerely oppose the idea of shifting all these functionalities onto a new framework. We have already shifted from PHP to a Javascript framework in the past, and yet the project has not turned up as a complete product. In my view this year's OGV project should focus majorly on integrating all the code written in the past (the one using Meteor framework), with all the functionalities up and running, and finally (and probably more importantly) deployment. It will also include some design and implementation changes to make things more efficient and production ready. Meteor is a javascript based framework, and adding functionalities will be equally (and probably much more) easier in this case. There might be some "bad points" regarding a particular approach or using some framework, but there are always solutions to problems and that's what we all as developers work for :D. Moreover, we are far ahead from the specification phase of OGV as a product. A lot of effort has already been put up, and almost everything is already up there (not yet in the main branch though). I don't say this because I have been a part OGV development or I am really obsessed with the code I have written or anything :P , but just to make things more efficient and productive :D! Cheers! Its javascript. You can do anything with it. So as far as the proposal and patch is considered- 1. If you concentrate on PHP-CI This will require some extensive work on your proposal and patch. Your proposal should concentrate majorly on almost everything, every single functionality, database structure, workflow, UI, used libraries, deployment etc. The patch you submit won't be exactly a patch but a new repo altogether which should convince the mentoring organization that the project can be done and deployed in the given time. I would suggest you to make a working demo of file upload, g->obj conversion and then basic model viewing in the browser. Also include UI and workflow ready. 2. If you choose to use Meteor You proposal should primarily concentrate on deployment. Deploying Meteor app on Free-BSD server. Your patch should tell us that you are familiar with Meteor and mongoDB. You can make a branch from 'maser', and work on something like viewing the model using different views like wireframe, adding color, transparency etc. Authentication is too easy to implement in Meteor, would suggest not to do that. -- Regards Shubham Chauhan -- ___ BRL-CAD Developer mailing list brlcad-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/brlcad-devel

You can setup a FreeBSD virtual machine on your host machine and try setting up the website on that. Later you can attach snapshots and details regarding what you did, in a small patch document. (This goes for DIvam Gupta as well. Please try getting some snapshots so that you can show what you did in order to deploy OGV-meteor on your freebsd vm) Or maybe you can work on adding and improving the ability to see different views of the model using ThreeJS i.e. once you have uploaded a 3D *.g file. Or the issue of adding the rgb parameters (colors in the models) to the object file while converting from .g to .obj at the time of upload. This said, feel free to come up with your ideas but those should also be some fairly challenging problems to solve or should demonstrate your knowledge and understanding about the code base. I'll put up an initial TODO list on the wiki shortly and notify you guys about it, but you got the point right!? Re: [brlcad-devel] GSoC Introduction
Hey, Keep working on the doc you have here. Seems pretty good. Try making it a bit more elaborate, since this is a project from your side, discuss this with Sean as well, as he can share with you some specific tasks that need to be done and help you form a definite proposal maybe. It won't be a "web-app" per se, so php should fit right in. Having said that, the main task for the project comes down to structure and UI. Since we do not want to change the initial structure again and again, your proposal should lay a strong foundation for the site structure and workflow (user and admin wherever required). This in my opinion will make a better proposal. How things look at the front-end can follow just after this. Since there is a lot of unstructured content, I guess it can be a good project, it will surely benefit the organization as a central web platform for all its web based products. I like your suggestion of moving the wiki to another sub-domain. I also had this thing in mind. Setting up the wiki sub-domain should also be a part of the proposal (IMO). You might as well want to look at jekyll as a framework. I was using this the other day to set up my blog. Might have a use case here as well. It is actually very user friendly for handling static sites. Otherwise PHP is also good for this. Re: [brlcad-devel] Approval and patch.
Hey, > It's just that adding new feature mostly gives lesser exposure to code as > compared to fixing an existing bug. Well, that can be achieved by adding new features as well. Showing your skills by fixing bugs will be good, given that the bug involves you to look, understand and change code at every level of the stack, and not just the frontend (html/css) part of it. Things like adjusting the size of text-boxes as a bug fix is not our priority for sure, but something more elaborate than that. By elaborate I mean, a bug-fix or a feature that touches bits and portions of the whole stack. Surely we'll proceed with debugging last year's code, merging it to the master branch and finally deploying it (in the first iteration), but that must follow once we have decided to go forward with OGV as a GSoC project and we have a student developer assigned to the project. For now it is just a game of who can do what, i.e. a student displaying his/her skills, relevant for the project, which should be portrayed by handling the stack as a whole, either through debugging or by adding something new. It is always upto the project owner, if he wants to incorporate the new feature or not, but it surely puts the student's point forward that he knows about the project he wishes to work for. And since this is the part where students put forward their skills relevant for the project, things like merging and debugging previous year's code should ideally be proceeded with, once we begin with the official coding period. We do not intend to use the proposal and patch submission period as the actual development period, do we!? The ability to read the existing code and understand it is very crucial > for any open source project, specially for this term of OGV in GSoC Yeah, but then, just that does not make OGV a GSoC worthy project. We would finish the debugging and code cleaning in the first 2-3 weeks of the program. If you have looked at the GSOC2015-merged branch, a lot of tasks are either already present, or need to be polished. There are 2-3 high priority medium-hard problems (which have been taken note of), but even those are not enough, to make it a "GSoC worthy project". This might be like a ~20 hours/week workload (on an average), instead of the standard ~40 hour/week. Thanks -- Transform Data into Opportunity. I told you about the issue of enabling colors into the models from the 3D model files into the object files on the IRC, and you wanted to make a patch for it. That is one. 2. You wanted to work on a patch which enabled users to keep the models private, and not publish them publically, you can keep working on that. 3. Then if you have tried uploading a large .g file, your laptop would have freezed (most probably). This is another. Please keep working on these if you are. These are the high priority, hard problems in OGV. There are a few bugs related to 3rd party logins (fetching user profile images to be specific), but we'll probably take that up in the coding period. Apart from all this the project has majorly UI/UX issues that need to be taken care of which are fairly easy to do. > There are many things I am planning out, I will make a rough proposal in > 1-2 days. > Kindly help me to overview. > Again I would say, seeking a todo list, just to incorporate it in the proposal seems to be a bit too convenient. I guess you are mainly doing this to make the logo look more prominent over the background, which does not gives a compelling reason to add a whole big circle to the logo. PS: Design is something that often leads to (as sean said) "bikeshed" discussions which can go really long, unnecessarily. In my opinion frequent and fast iterations followed by a good review is key. Having different perspectives over the design will always be there, so a good number of options and iterations to choose and compare from, often helps us to reach a consensus. -- Mobile security can be enabling, not merely restricting. For code clean-up (whosoever has the rights and will be doing it), I suggest to merge last year's GSoC branch i.e. "GSOC2015-merged" with the master branch (after some bug-fixes and testing). Basically, what I'm suggesting is the following structure for the git repo - 'master' branch - tested and updated code by developers for the current/next-to-come release 'release' branch - what actually goes online That's the way many other organizations manage their repositories on github. ref: OpenSSL <https://github.com/openssl/openssl> This way the developer's github profile is updated and his code will be publicly visible on the master branch of our repo. Minor issue though. Also, any way we can improve the banner at the home page? An interactive 3D rendered logo would look good. Suggestions? Awaiting Sean's thoughts regarding the progress. We must keep separate lists (), one containing your "Page" and "Discussion" on the extreme left, and the others in a separate list, towards the right. Not just to resemble it like the standard wiki pages, but to show that these are actually part of two different selection categories. Also it should be a dedicated navbar pane for wiki options only. Can you try find a way to exclude the "Tools" and "Account" dropdown out of that navbar, and place it somewhere else more appropriate. *taking reference from the same image you forwarded me* -- Attend Shape: An AT&T Tech Expo July 15-16. Re: [brlcad-devel] Take a look at new site and wiki
The amount of overcrowdedness depends on the mouse click density in a particular area. Adding a dropdown for wiki options just increased the #clicks right there. Also the icons are unecessary. I would still suggest you to stick to the standard wiki design. If we can't move the "Edit" and "History" tabs to far right (just before search), we can atleast add considerable amount of space between ["Page", "Discussion"] and ["Edit", "History", "delete", "move"] http://i.imgur.com/X86pQoh.png These tabs can be made a bit smaller as well. Have a look at other design formats. You'll get an idea. The reason I'm suggesting you to stick to the standard is just because almost all wiki page designs are that way. They need not be that fancy. Re: [brlcad-devel] Deployed OGV on freeBSD droplet
Hey Gauravjeet, Things are definitely starting to look good now. A few points from my side (trying to make the list mutually exclusive from already mentioned issues). 1. After clicking on notifications icon, it remains open even if we switch view from other navbar icons. Also, it must close, if we click somewhere else, outside the notification's box. 2. Try fitting the notification statement in a single line, make text smaller, maybe. 3. On the profile page- "Super User has no uploaded models", must be aligned properly with the content above. 4. I think, we can merge the search page with the newsfeed page. An entirely different view just for search does not seem to be logical. 5. The User description on the profile page- try making all the text it left aligned (instead of center). Also, try different text sizes there. Like the "Here Since" thing can be made a bit smaller. 6. Again in the User description part on the profile page- Format the date time into a human readable format. something prettier. 7. If someone thinks that there are a lot of icons on the navbar, then you can try adding dropdown as well. I'm not saying that I don't like it, just pointing out an alternative. 8. Maybe make the footer same as the one made here - http://live.esde.name/ On Thu, Aug 11, 2016 at 11:47 PM, Christopher Sean Morrison wrote: > > On Aug 11, 2016, at 12:23 PM, Gauravjeet Singh < > gaurav.ishwer...@gmail.com> wrote: > > > > Finally, OGV is live on a freeBSD system > > http://138.68.52.118:3000/ > > Awesome Gauravjeet, > > Thrilled to see this finally running on a FreeBSD instance!
