 I have a jib sock and it is a pain to both put on and take down but it has 
kept the jib in pretty good condition.

Stus-List Fresh water pressure pump

I need to replace the fresh water pump between the holding tank and the faucets 
on my C 33 MK II
I think I need a 2' to 2.5' lift.
Is there any benefit to trying to place the pump closer to the holding tank 
level?
There are a lot of pumps out there from about $30 to $150.
What pumps are people buying these days?

 Strange to see your comment on a shackle.
I had a new shackle on a new spin sheet blow this week. Luckily all the parts 
were trapped by the famous C toe rail. Thanks for the advice on searching out 
heavier rings which I likely should have for a sheet. I have taped the ring so 
there is no end to get caught on something.

The tether was a West Marine brand.  (Yeah, I know how many times I've posted 
to the list not to buy anything with the West Marine brand.)
Anyway, split rings for snap shackles are hard to find.  They must be stronger 
than the ones you use to secure cotter pins in order to withstand the force of 
pulling without straightening out.
I could have ordered a Ronstan plunger pin kit which includes a single heavy 
duty split ring for about $20.  I decided to look at other options.
I ordered some from mcmaster.com.  Their Part #90905A652 9/16" 316 stainless 
split ring seems to work OK.  While obviously not as sturdy as the Ronstan, it 
fit and withstood a significant pull without deforming.  Unless you have a 
rather excitable gorilla on your crew, I suspect it should work just fine.  A 
pack of 10 is about $10-15 shipped.
If anyone finds the standard snap shackle split rings online or a better 
alternative, please post.

 I like this. A couple of times this past summer, the pit man was not fast 
enough getting the halyard secure and the chute dropped a few feet. Much more 
difficult to pull the chute up when it is full.

I think you can see how it works.  Mast person hoists chute with an outboard 
pulling motion.  Halyard "parks" in the cam cleat.  Once the chute is up, the 
mast person can move to other tasks.  The halyard remains "parked".  Later, the 
pit person can then take the slack out of the halyard and give it a pull.  The 
halyard pops out of the cam cleat into the "free" position.  It is then ready 
to drop the chute.  This assumes the boat has a cabin top rope clutch for the 
halyard.

Last season, I ended up having my boatyard doing this.  I have no idea of the 
last time this was done but it was before 2010.  The boatyard used Ken Heaton’s 
torque values.  In order to loosen some of the nuts, an impact tool was

Ok Guys,

Since I have the mast out, this provides the rare opportunity to access ALL of 
the keel bolts.  I've measured each of the bolt and nut diameters and checked 
the archives for torque specs.  I intend to buy a toque multiplier and the 
appropriate sized sockets.  I think I can do it for less than the yard is going 
to charge and I'll come out of it with some tools.  I'll also be able to tell 
myself that it was done correctly.

  

That being said it sounds like the best practices are are follows:

-  be on the hard

- loosen the bolts one at a time, clean, and lubricate with tef-gel

- reinstall and torque at progressively higher levels.

  

I was unable to find the torque spec for my 1.5" bolt in the website but Ken 
Heaton cited 600lbs in one of his past responses.

forward of the bulkhead. I put the outflow for a new electric bilge about 6"

My whale bilge pump exits about two feet forward of the transom on the port 
side, just under the toe rail. I ran my electric version to the same place, 
just underneath the manual one.

picked up mu project boat last winter and they had the hose from the bilge pump 
connected to the vent fitting for the head holding tank.  I am putting the head 
back together and will need that vent, but I can’t figure out where the bilge

I use one of those ButaneThey are light and compactIt has been on the cabin 
sole many times and keeps working. I have now bolted it down.
The one draw back I find is that it is very hot. I had it on low one time 
heating pork and beans and I was on the bow talking to a fellow boater. Went 
back into the cabin and they were severally baked beans. I just threw the pot 
out. Great for the price, don't leave unattended.

So, primarily, I use Superlube.  Pop the top off the Jabsco pump assembly, pull 
out the plunger, wipe some on the plunger o-ring and the shaft and re-install.  
In between SuperLube applications, I use olive oil.  I keep a small bottle of 
olive oil on the boat for cooking.  Each spring, I replace the bottle with a 
new one.  What's left in the old bottle becomes interim head lube.

The reason for failure mode, as was describe to me, is that in reverse the 
clutch cones can chatter, quiver or vibrate against one another causing wear 
which eventually leads to slippage and a gear box re-build. Many already know 
how difficult a Kanzaki can be to get out of reverse after sailing with it 
locked.

Folding and feathering props can stay open if you don't stop the shaft by 
putting it in reverse.  With a fixed prop you can reduce drag by "trailing the 
shaft" and leaving it in neutral.  The problem is that some transmissions don't 
get properly lubricated in this condition (IIRC: paragon?)  Reverse should 
always be fine no matter what engine/transmission.

I replaced all of my navigation lights with LED's this year. I was able to find 
units that fit the plates on the pulpits. I recall they were about 20 $$ each. 
Much brighter.which reminds me I have to come up with a shield for the 
stern light because it is so bright, you look astern and the night vision is 
gone.

I originated this issue.
Remove the ICOM radio from my network and the GNX 20 displays  functions. Left 
it running for two days and went out for a sail.
We found some date on line that some N2K compliant radios are not fully 
compatible.
Now have to come up with something so the DSC function on my ICOM works.

So my partner contacted ICOM UK, who said that despite what is printed in the 
manual,the Icom M506 does not support obtaining a GPS position over NMEA 2000. 
The menu option to select an NMEA 2000 GPS source does nothing.

Apparently they had compatibility issues with different manufacturers' MFDs 
when designing the radio, so at the last minute they pulled support for 
obtaining position information via NMEA 2000. They have asked ICOM Japan for a 
firmware update to fix this, but none has been forthcoming.

So caveat emptor. I would still recommend this radio, on the proviso that you 
are able to provide position info via NMEA 0183. Without it you will still get 
AIS on your plotter (but not the radio), but the radio will not be able to make 
GPS tagged DSC calls, which is obviously concerning.

It's advertised as a fully native NMEA 2000 device, but at this time it is not.

Stus-List Garmin GNX 20

I bought a Garmin wind instrument package a year ago and one of the displays is 
a GNX 20.
The display lock continuously. The on/off button does not work. I have to 
disconnect the power. 
Garmin says this display works flawlessly. They are trying to tell me the 
problems is because I have an ICOM M604 radio connected to the Garmin system.
I am having problem believing this because the M604 is NMEA 2000 compatible.
Has anyone had a problem with the GNX 20 display freezing?
Did you come up with a fix?

I took mine apart as best I could to see if I could find wear and tear.
The one thing I noticed was that the hydraulic fluid was very very low.
I emptied what I could. I have the instruction for bleeding the system and did 
this and then refilled according to the instructions. I put some tension on it 
left for a few days then topped up again with fluid.
I took it to the workshop at the yacht club where we sail and we think we got 
about 2,500 pounds of pressure on the system and the piston did not move at all 
over 48 hours. Apparently the hydraulic fluid heats in the black casing and 
vaporizes which can leak around the seals.
You may want to try this first.

The Princess Auto one worked for me. It had, I will call them, two teeth or 
arms,,I felt three would have been better.
It did need some heat from a propane torch and a couple of sharp taps from a 
hammer and the puller worked beautifully.

I put a new furler on Enterprise a year ago. I had Harkens on my two previous 
boats.
I went with Pro furler on Enterprise. I got a new head sail at the same time 
and the sail loft is a Pro furler dealer. My thinking was they would do it all 
and ensure the sail worked with the furler.
they did a great job installing. there was a significant cost saving too.
But, I do think the Harken worked better. I find if the tension on the forestay 
is not just right, the Pro furler is very hard to furl.

Stus-List Navtec back stay tensioner

Continuing in my saga to figure out why the tensioner does not hold, I have 
unscrewed every screw and bolt and guage. Nothing looks worn but I know that 
something being old and brittle could be the issue.
It seems to me the tensioner drum itself has to come apart so you can get at 
the seals or o-ring at the bottom of the piston. I cannot see how to open this. 
Does anyone know how this comes apart?
I have the Navtec 10 - 7 which is the square sided drum

I bought a 33 MK II two years ago and my wife said I had to get a dodger or a 
bimini.
I  opted for a bimini because I am on Lake Huron and not many manufacturers 
nearby. I canvased the TO Boat show and no one was interested in making  me a 
dodger because they all said they need to see the boat and most wanted to 
install, but no one would because of the travel time.
Talked with Genco, they showed me pictures of biminis they recently made for 
33's.
I installed myself. Frame fit perfectly, canvas fit perfectly.
I like the bimini better than the dodger because I can get out of the sun too.

my son who is a bit taller than me!)

I got to thinking it might illuminate the Windex from the deck.  Tried it last 
night.  It REALLY illuminated the Windex.

I clamped it to the stern pulpit.  Had to use a rag to help it grip.

The tilt has click stops and the swivel is a bit loose so it took a bit of 
effort to get it aimed just right but it seemed to work fairly well. 

There may be other similar lights out there that will work better.  What the 
heck, if it doesn't make a good Windex light for you, you can still use it to 
work around the boat.

My holding tank is plastic but the hand hole came loose and was aconsiderable 
pain in the ass to fix.  The forward water tank in mineis aluminum and the fuel 
tank is aluminum.  The back stayattachments are a place for detailed 
inspection.  You'll probablyfind that the steering cable idlers plate, directly 
under the pedestal,is probably badly rusted.  It should be one of the first 
safetyrepairs.  The engine mounts may be soft and in need of replacementtoo.

How are you going to remove the mylar. The stripe on Enterprise is in bad

Now, why is this data wrong.  First, it was the first time I'd used the 
SailTimer App in anger and it wasn't a controlled experiment in polar learning 
(the app lets you toggle polar learning on and off, and I wasn't careful about 
when it was on).  Second, this data was collected in a variety of wind 
conditions and sail configurations.  Friday afternoon it was blowing 20 gusting 
35 and I was sailing under double-reefed main only because my mom was aboard 
with only one other of my regular crew and they were nervous in that wind 
strength.  Saturday and Sunday I was in a two-day regatta in very light and 
fickle air under full main, 155% genoa, and sometimes even a staysail.  Because 
I was preoccupied with racing and adjusting sails constantly, I wasn't paying 
attention to the app and accurate polar learning.
The app must have some kind of algorithm to interpolate / extrapolate boat 
speeds in wind speeds and angles that it hasn't observed, because I can 
guarantee I didn't hit every combination of TWS/TWA in the above data over the 
weekend.  But this gives an example of what the instrument and app can do.  
Before the season ends, I'd like to get back out and do a controlled experiment 
- a new data set under main and 155 in say 12 knots, through every TWA, 
toggling learning on and off at the right times.

That Garmin thing is a cool solution, I like it.  The Navico (B) 
version doesn't seem to be available anywhere, so that may have been a 
possible route to firmware updates but no longer...

I guess my conclusion early on was to get a MDF that goes with the big 
electronics on the boat, so my a75 MDF can update my EV200 autopilot.  
And IMHO it makes sense to have the same brand of anyway, so that you 
are sure they will work together as best they can.  My wind/speed/depth 
system, since it is B, is essentially orphaned.  I'm not so concerned 
with that.  And I am quite happy with my Raymarine gear, whereas I've

As to why you can't update one companies gear from another companies 
MDF, I can't see any company signing up for that - say I update my B 
firmware over my Ray MDF, and next thing my Triton displays are bricks - 
who do I call to get it resolved? That would not be a fun day.

I bought an EV100 autohelm this spring. A few weeks ago, I got an email from 
Raymarine talking about a software update. I call their tech line asking how I 
could get the update since the autohelm is stand alone. The rest of my 
electronics are Garmin.
He said I was out of luck. I pointed out I could update my Garmin with an SD 
card. He did not give a shit!

It did appear that Airmar required one of their weather stations as an 
interface to update their sensors,but I did not explore this,nor how other 
manufacturers update their Airmar-made sensors.  

I'm sure there are situations where manufacturers attempt to promote a 
proprietary, closed-shop approach to updating but most of those i found did not.

Other vendors don't take this approach?  Sure they do.  I've got B Triton 
displays - can't do any updating on them without a B MFD.  Same is true with 
all that I'm aware of.  And I'd love to buy a Maretron ultrasonic tank level 
sender, it is N2K - but to calibrate it I also have to buy one of their 
displays, which I have no other use for.

I thought about this Tim but I have a GMI 10 on the same backbone as a GNX 20 
display. The GMI works flawlessly. The GNX 20 freezes. So it does not seem to 
be a voltage issue.
I have update software for the GNX 20 and still freezes.
Garmin has not been much help so far.

I wanted to replace the sheaves on Enterprise. I was advised by Klacko Spar who 
manufactured the mast to send them the old sheaves. They told me C did not 
necessarily use the same sheave on a particular mast. More what every they had 
on hand at the time.
I think it would be difficult to change without taking the mast down. I had to 
move halyards last year and did it with the mast up and it was all by feeling 
because I could not get high enough in the bosun's chair.

Stus-List Hydraulic Back Stay Adjuster

My 33 MK II has a Navtec Model IA 7 - 10 back stay adjuster.
I was out today and notic3d the fore stay kept sagging. I would pump the 
adjuster to tension it and in a few minutes it would release.
I suspect this is original equipment on a 30 year old boat. 
I am wondering if others with this vintage boat have experienced this and if 
there is a fix?
I am in Sarnia Ontario. Are there any repair depots in Ontario I can talk to?
If you replaced the adjuster, what did you buy?
Has anyone tried to replace with a couple of Harken blocks?

I use  a strip of canvas the same colour as my sail cover. It is about 5" wide 
and 5' long. 
I wrap it around and it does the job in all but heavy, prolonged rains.

I bought a EV-100 recentlyThe documentation is extremely confusingI called 
Raymarine Tech Support. There is not rudder indicator.I suspect you are seeing 
that reference in the manual that talks about the ST4000. The person I talked 
to said there are about two pages in that manual about installing the motor 
mount to the wheel. Once that is done, put that manual aside.the other problem 
I had was there is no power cable for one of the units and I find the 
black/white cables are short. Apparently both of these issues are my 
responsibility and have to buy these cables myself.

Stus-List transom ladder

 Enterprise, my 33 MK II did not have a boarding ladder when I purchased her.
I am looking for one that folds up. Because of the slope of the transom, it 
need a bend in it.  I am not having any luck finding one.
Does anyone know of a good source. Garelick has been suggested but I don't see 
anything on their site.

(Stearn’s twin stay IIRC) made a noticeable twanging sound as it hit the metal 
roof over the slip.    It was hard to find the rock star at the party that 
afternoon.  Years later that rock star became Calypso’s insurance agent.  I 
don’t think he ever forgot how long it takes to reverse direction with a

Subject: Stus-List Folding props    I was not referring to feathering props. As 
I understand them, they are designed to be about equal in forward or reverse. 
My former Max-Prop 3 blade feathering prop was excellent and relatively quickly 
got the boat going in reverse.   Any geared folding 2-blade prop will get a 
boat moving in reverse--just not very efficiently--especially if it is 
optimized for forward motion and minimum drag when folded.   The time it takes 
between putting her into reverse and actually moving backward with flow over 
the rudder is what can take several seconds with a folder..   If other things 
are happening nearby (current, wind, pilings, etc.), these few seconds can seem

Enterprise came with the Brady Bunch Plaid. It was dirty and stain. Much to my 
surprise with a gentle wash, it looks pretty good.

I bought a C 33 MK II with this engine last fall.
I had a larger engine in my Mirage 29 & thought it may be under powered.
The Yanmar 2 GM 20 moves Enterprise (the 33) along nicely.

I bought a 33 MK II in Toronto last fall and there was a loud hum. The hum was 
there on Toronto Island where I pick her up and at a marina on the mainland. I 
asked the owner about it and he said I have never heard that before and I 
thought what have I just bought myself.
When I launched her in Sarnia this spring, no hum so I am assuming it was 
tensioning of the stays and shroud

Stus-List Main sheet traveller track

 I pulled the main sheet traveller track on my CC 33 Mk II to day.
There is a metal strip under it.
When I re-install it, should it be:
Glass, metal strip, bedding compound, track
or glass, bedding  compound, metal strip, track
or glass, bedding compound, metal strip, bedding compound, track?
I have not decided on what bedding compound to use. Any suggestions?

I experience the same thing, the cockpit had about 5 inches of water in it 
during a thaw earlier this winter.
Another project to put on the list for the new Mark II.

Stus-List Stove

 An question from another new CC 33  MK II owner.
I have been trying to get the original Hillerange two burner pressure alcohol 
stove working, and it scares me. One burner lights, flame is blue but not 
adjustable. The other sounds like a jet engine and burns about 8 high. Made an 
easy decision to scrap this.Any suggestions about a new stove top would be 
appreciated

I recently purchased a CC 33 Mk II. I previous had a CC 26, then a Mirage 29.
I am fortunate that she is on the hard on our laneway for the winter so I have 
about a 30 second walk to get on her. Very convenient for me to get to know the 
boat and do work on her over the winter.
