Thank you, Scott! Very kind. It has been fun to do and I hope it inspires
people to stop, look at and listen to the birds around them!

[cobirds] Eurasian Widgeon still at Pella Crossing

2022-01-16 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
The Eurasian Widgeon was still at Pella Crossing this morning, in among a
large flotilla of American Widgeons, Redheads, Common Mergansers, and a
very busy male Hooded Merganser.

The pond closest to the parking lot was totally frozen this morning, so we
figured if the bird was there, it would be in that first pond on the west
side of N75th. That pond tends to stay open. Sure enough., the Eurasian was
there. Quite a few birders were there, all getting good looks at him.

[cobirds] Foothills Audubon October Meeting: Raptor Monitoring in Longmont

2021-10-08 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Foothills Audubon Bird Club's October meeting is Tuesday, October 12 at
7:00 PM.

This month's speaker is Scott Severs, Senior Wildlife Technician for the
City of Longmont, who will speak about the city's raptor monitoring program
and other volunteer opportunities for birders.

The City of Longmont’s raptor monitoring program is designed to determine
the current state of local raptor populations and to provide a historical
record of raptor presence or absence throughout the city. The program
provides the public volunteer opportunities to learn about local wildlife
while helping staff gain insight and build working relationships with
community members through their nest observation. Natural resource
managers, park planners, and other city employees use the information to
better understand raptor population health, level of sensitivity towards
human presence/disturbance, and spatial and temporal activity.

***No need to pre-register for this month’s meeting! Simply click the
following link and join at 6:50 PM, October 12 so we can began the meeting
on time. Please feel free to share this link with family members and
friends! *

[cobirds] Spring Count Raptors in Boulder County

2021-05-19 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
My Spring Bird Count area for the Foothills Audubon Bird Club
<https://foothillsaudubon.weebly.com/> covers south Longmont and parts of
Boulder County, including Table Mountain and Haystack. Despite the dearth
of warbler species, my team (Mary Jane Makepeace and myself) had 102
species including 3 raptors not typical for the area this time of year:

   - 1 Northern Goshawk was seen soaring over the south end of Table
Mountain last Friday. In the same general vicinity there were 2 Ferruginous
   Hawks.
   - On Saturday, we were counting at yards on Cardinal Lane (east of
N63rd, north off Niwot Road) when an immature Broad-winged Hawk flew over.
   - On Sunday, we spotted yet a third Ferruginous overhead on Niwot Road
   between Hwy 287 and N 95th.

[cobirds] Lagerman Res on a windy Sunday + E Kingbird

2021-03-28 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
A blustery walk around Lagerman Reservoir today yielded about 20 Ruddy
Ducks, a couple of Cinnamon Teal, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, about 6
Buffleheads, and about 20 Ring-necked Ducks. Both Osprey were present, as
were the two Bald Eagles nesting to the south. A male Northern Harrier was
hunting just west of the Osprey platform. The treat of the day was a FOS
Eastern Kingbird holding its own in the wind on the south side of the
reservoir.

[cobirds] Sandhill Cranes, W Longmont

2020-11-04 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
About 40 Sandhill Cranes flew over my neighborhood Sunday about 1 PM,
headed south, just east of Haystack Mt. The flock began to circle so I
followed it in my car. At one point, it looked like it was going to land in
cornfields at N 63rd and Oxford, but they reformed and began to climb. When
I lost sight of them, they had caught a good thermal and were south of the
Boulder Reservoir.

[cobirds] Eclipsing Summer or Hepatic Tanager in Longmont

2020-05-12 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
A bird just passed through my west Longmont yard that I believe is either a
Summer or a Hepatic Tanager in eclipse. The head, back, sides and rump were
eclipsing red, but the only other color on the bird was an olive brown. It
had the shape, size and bill of a tanager. Definitely not a Scarlet because
the wings were just olive drab. No black anywhere on this bird.

Has anyone else seen such a bird lately? It only stayed for about 30
seconds. The camera is set up in case it does come again, but my guess is
that this bird is on the move.

[cobirds] Cassin's Finches and Baby GHOs in West Longmont

2020-04-16 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I have expected to have Cassin's Finches at my feeders for the 15 years
that I have lived in my west Longmont home, and they finally found me!
Since last Saturday, 2 males and 6 females have been regular visitors
throughout the day.

A pair of nesting Great-Horned Owls in Willow Park (also west Longmont) has
2 fluffy chicks in it. The owls built the nest very close to the path and
to a bridge, so the City of Longmont has posted signs, asking people to
give the birds some distance. Both adults can regularly be seen close by.

The nest is about halfway from the barn at Willow Park and N 89th Street to
the west right next to the bridge. Best viewing is west of the nest. Just
be mindful to put some distance between you and the birds.

[cobirds] Ash-throated Flycatcher east of Longmont

2019-04-19 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
During our monthly bird census for the City of Longmont on the Peschel open
space, Jamie Simo and I found an Ash-throated Flycatcher feeding. If you
take the sidewalk from the parking lot, you eventually cross the ditch and
it was just passed the ditch that we found the bird Wednesday morning.
Sadly, the bird quickly moved way out of range for any photos but we could
clearly see the rusty wing patch and the rusty color on the tail.

We also found a Swamp Sparrow, a Sage Thrasher, and quite a few
Great-tailed Grackles.

[cobirds] Possible Yellow-throated Warbler in Longmont!

2018-10-14 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I loaded my feeders yesterday in advance of the coming snow. Today
(Sunday), there was a flurry of activty with the usual suspects, as wel as
some White-crowned Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos. The big surprise came at
2:45 PM when I happened to glance at the feeder in time to see a small bird
fliltting in an out of cedar branches. The body was overall black and
white. The bird had a very distinctive yellow throat and a very white eye
stripe. There was no other coloration on the bird at all. I ruled out
Grace's and Blackburnian because the eye stripe was all white. My best
guess is that this was a Yellow-throated Warbler in west Longmont.

Any other sightings of this specie in the area?

morning. We were just east of the new bridge. There is a speed limit sign of 25
miles an hour and an Ovenbird was calling in a thick stand of Mountain Maple.
We heard the bird called four times. Couldn’t see it, but that call was
unmistakable.

Yesterday morning at Walden Ponds (also Boulder County), there was a single
Redhead and a male Glossy Ibis.

[cobirds] Eastern Phoebe - Boulder County

2018-05-13 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
On Spring Bird Count yesterday (5/12) for the Foothills Audubon group, my
count partner and I found an Eastern Phoebe just west of Niwo on N 79th,
south of County Rd 30. There is a small grove of trees that remains fairly
untouched and the Phoebe was in there.

Someone told me that there is a nesting pair in or near Niwot. Does anyone
know where that is?

[cobirds] American Avocets east of Longmont

2018-04-15 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
During a bird survey this morning for the city of Longmont at the Peschel
open space, Jamie Simo and I had the pleasure of finding more than 20
American Avocets in different locations along the St. Vrain. One flock of
14 took wing at one point, but came down at our eastern-most count area.

Peschel lies just west of the Sandstone Ranch area. The floods of 2013
resulted in massive habitat changes, including small mud flats and quiet
inlets that are being used by migrating ducks and shore birds. The area is
not yet open to the public, but when it is, it will be a great opportunity
for waterfowl, shore birds, and passerines. I'm just waiting for Sandhill
Cranes to put it on their "must visit" stops during migration!

[cobirds] Harris Hawk still there

2018-02-06 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
The Harris Hawk was right where Joey Angstman reported it last Friday,
north of Prospect Rd on the frontage road yesterday (2/5/) morning. It was
sitting low in a small tree. It eventually flew and kind of bounced around
in the wind gusts over the Colorado Welcome Center before heading south. I
lost it after that.

[cobirds] Boulder County and Standley Lake Snowy Owls... skunked again!

2018-01-18 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Nadeen Lester and I spent the better part of today looking for first the
Snowy Owl reported flying over the Boulder Reservoir and the one at
Standley Lake. We searched fields around the Boulder Rez as well as fields
and pastures north (since the bird was last seen flying north over the Rez)
to no avail.

We then headed over to Standley and spent several hours watching rooftops
and the dam. Left about 3. Skunked again!

Did anyone see either of these birds today?

[cobirds] Sandhill Cranes in Boulder County

2017-11-30 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
While cycling on the northernmost section of the Open Sky Loop Trail north

Sandhill Cranes. Scanning the sky, I spotted a flock of 24 circling over a

This was about 1:30 PM today. I'm headed over to N63rd now to see if I can

[cobirds] Greater White Fronted Goose Outside Longmont

[cobirds] Longmont Raptor Update

2017-06-07 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
The owls that took over the Red Tail nest at N 75th and Nelson Road west of
Longmont have been out of the nest since just after that last horrific snow
storm. However, within days, the developer began tearing down the trees in
that grove! The city told them to stop, but they had already terrified the
owlets, which weren't strong enough to fly more than a few yards at that
point. Two days later, they had torn down 4 or 5 more trees and the city
shut them down entirely.Since then, I have only been able to find one
owlet, I've stopped by at night to see if I can hear GHO young screeching,
but so far the grove has been silent.

In the meantime, the Osprey on the platform there managed to remain,
despite the noisy machinery and they are actively feeding at least two
chicks.

That grove is full of passerines: Western Wood Peewee, House Wren,
Bullock's Oriole, and Western Kingbird, and Black-chinned Hummingbird in
full display! I suspect this is the same BC Hummer that has been visiting
my feeders, just south of all that new development.

How sad to know that all of that rich bird habitat is going to be
completely destroyed.

[cobirds] Longmont Ducks

2017-01-23 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
After seeing the Tundra Swans, my sister and I went looking for ducks and
we weren't disappointed.

St. Vrain Park had a smattering of Common Goldeneye and Common Mergansers,
but there was one Hooded Merganser in with them

Clover Basin Lake (west of Longmont on Nelson Road) was PACKED with ducks
yesterday in the only patch of open water on the whole lake. Among the
flotilla of Canada Geese, were about 100 Redheads, about 100 Coots, 20
Common Mergansers, 20 Common Goldeneye, and 6 Ring-Necked Ducks.

I love seeing the Redheads. That always tells me that spring is around the

[cobirds] 4 Trumpeter Swans east of Longmont

2017-01-23 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Jim Krick with the Longmont Parks and Open Space office sent me an alert

along the St. Vrain east of Longmont. My sister and I went out yesterday
(Sunday 1/22/17) and they are still there. It appears to be 2 adults and 2
immature.

You can see them from County Rd 5, south off HWY 119. There is a police

where we had the best view of the birds. They were feeding among a bunch of

[cobirds] Black-Chinned Hummingbirds in Longmont

2016-08-15 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I have been so pleased to have two male and at least one female
Black-Chinned Hummingbird at my feeder in west Longmont! They add a
wonderful variety of Rufous and Broad-tails that are my normal summer
visitors.

Last Saturday, a Red-tail Hawk landed in my neighbors' tree behind my
house. These are very tiny lots, so the big bird was very awkward in the
dense maple branches. I was alerted to its presence by the constant chatter
of 3 young House Wrens and their mother and all of the hummers. The latter
kept buzzing the tree, trying to get a closer look at the intruder. The
hawk then flew to my next-door neighbors' roof and sat there for an hour.
All 3 species of hummers spent the next hour hovering 3-4 feet away from
the hawk. The Rufous were the most agitated of course, and spent that
elevated adrenaline chasing everyone else around!

[cobirds] Spring Count goodies for Longmont area

2016-05-17 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I had two areas to cover in this year's Spring Bird Count. Foothills
Audubon Bird Club covers the Longmont, Berthoud, Loveland, Ft. Collins
areas. We covered west of Longmont from Hwy 287 to Hwy36, between Hwy 52
and Hwy 66. Like I said, a BIG area!

Although my count partner and I didn't have the banner year that the
Sapsucker Woods team had on their Big Day in the northeast (232 sp!!!), we
had a very good count with 92 species IDed and one flycatcher specie not
positively IDed because it flew. (Dang those birds!!)

Our highlight was a female Blackpoll Warbler seen just north of the 49th
Street bridge, west of Haystack Golf Course. She was foraging in a big old
cottonwood.

A Wood Duck in a small ditch in the Lake Valley neighborhood was a treat,
but the best of all was a Burrowing Owl that Mary Jane flushed off the road
(!) at the entrance to Lagerman Reservoir early Saturday evening as she was
driving home. This is great news because BUOWs had been nesting SW of
Lagerman, but in recent years, the land owner there disked all the prairie
dog holes. I'm hoping the bird Mary Jane saw has found habitat in the dog
towns on county land north and east of Lagerman, or across the road on the
old Double Dove Ranch, now in county ownership.

If anyone sees this bird, please let Michelle Durant with Boulder County
know so she can keep tabs on the bird. mdur...@bouldercounty.org

[cobirds] Longmont Greenway birds and update on owl nest

2016-05-02 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I took a walk around Golden Ponds and through Rogers Grove to Boston Avenue
yesterday. There was Yellow Rump fallout between the two westernmost ponds.
League estimated about a hundred males with a few immature is mixed in, moving
northwards and feeding along the St. Vrain.

Also at the ponds: 1 Common Yellowthroat make and possible female, 3 Belted
Kingfishers in an epic territorial display, and two pair of Blue Wing Teal
mixed in with numerous Mallards.

Roger's Grove was full of American Robins and we headed over to Boston Avenue
to take a look at the osprey nest at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. While
watching the Osprey, we heard a Wood dDuck. Sure enough, a pair of Wood Ducks
was moving in and out of the cat tails in the pond just east of the Osprey
nest. Also in that pond was a female Common Merganser.

As of yesterday afternoon, there was only one Great Horned owlet left in the
nest at 75th and Nelson west of Longmont. The other two are in the branches and
difficult to find now.

[cobirds] Longmont Owl and Osprey Nest Updates

2016-04-21 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
The GHOs that took over the RTH nest at 75th and Nelson in west Longmont
have THREE healthy owlets. They've grown so big that the female is
completely out of the nest now. One of the chicks yesterday was flapping
its fuzzy wings. They'll be climbing through the branches soon.

The Osprey on N 75th, just south of where the owls are, are both on the
nest. I witnessed mating last week and the female is down in the nest a
lot, but I'm not sure she's brooding yet.

[cobirds] Yay! Yellow-headed Blackbirds in west Longmont!

2016-04-18 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Silly that I should start that subject line with YAY!, since this is the
typical spring rallying cry as our favs start coming through, right?

During all that wet, sloppy snow-rain yesterday, two Yellow-headed
Blackbirds joined about 30 Common Grackles and as many Red-winged
Blackbirds pigging out at my feeders in west Longmont. All was well and
good until the female Cooper's Hawk decided to pay a visit and cleared the
yard for several hours!

[cobirds] White Pelicans and American Avocets east of Longmont

2016-04-15 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
While doing a bird survey for the city this morning on the Peschel Property
just east of County Line Road in Longmont, my partner and I spotted two
White Pelicans flying east over the St. Vrain. This property is part of the
Longmont Greenway but it suffered severe damage in the 2013 floods so the
trail between Peschel and Sandstone Ranch is closed for now.

The floods created numerous sandbars and ponds along the St. Vrain out
there and we had at least 5 American Avocets, several Green-wing teal,
Blue-wing Teal, Cinnamon Teal, Gadwall, one Greater Yellowlegs, scads of
Mallards, many Kildeer and one very young Canada Goose gosling with its
parents. There are at least 4 Ring-necked Pheasant on the property and
even though most of the trail is now closed off due to flood damage, there
is a small parking lot (south of Hwy 119 on County Line Road) and from the
parking lot, you can hear, if not see them from time to time. From the bit
of sidewalk that is still open, you can see the Bald Eagle nest on the St.
Vrain.

[cobirds] Ducks on Walden Ponds Saturday (Boulder County)

I popped over to Walden Ponds today to try out a new camera lens. The ponds
are about 90% frozen over. There was a group of about 50 Ring-billed Gulls,
maybe as many Canada Geese (I didn't look for Cacklers), and about 100
Mallards. Highlight birds were about a dozen American Wigeon and squeaking
like little dog toys, 10 Green-Wing Teal, and about 6 Northern Pintails. A
couple of Belted Kingfishers were yammering at each other over the

[cobirds] Common Nighthawk in Boulder County

[cobirds] Willow Flycatcher at Boulder Rez

2015-05-26 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I took my dog for a swim on the north end of the Boulder Reservoir
yesterday (Monday) and we heard a Willow Flycatcher singing in, well, the
willows, along with a Yellow Warbler. There were 4 Great Egrets snoozing on
the NW shore and Vesper Sparrows singing in the pastures.

The Red-tailed Hawks that nested in the tree with all the Great Blue Herons
(north of the reservoir on N 55th) were feeding 3 hungry chicks. The
herons seem unperturbed by their presence in their rookery.

My backyard in west Longmont saw several migrants this weekend, including
Brewer's and Clay Colored Sparrows and a House Wren.

[cobirds] Swainson's Hawk and the new eagle nest in Longmont

2015-04-20 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Saw my FOS Swainson's Hawk yesterday in Longmont (4/19/15) sitting a n the
bee hive next to Airport Road, just south of Mountain View Ave., just east
of the Osprey platform on the Zweck's farm.

From that vantage point, it is easy to spot the new Bald Eagle nest. Follow
the line of the railroad tracks (with your eyes) west and it stands out
like a sore thumb right now, pre-leaves. A spotting scope provides the best
view because it is way back from the road. It is private land and there is
no direct access to the nest. Watch it from Airport Road.

[cobirds] Cliff Swallows and Osprey in Longmont

Two Cliff Swallows arrived yesterday (FOS) at the bridge where they've been

a couple of scouts arrive a week or so before the rest of the males show

A gorgeous unbanded male Osprey arrived at the nesting platform on N 75th,

2015-02-15 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Friday afternoon, I spotted 2 Turkey Vultures circling over the southwest
section of the Golden Ponds path in Longmont (Boulder County).

Yesterday, I hiked with friends up to the quartz quarry in Pike National

Driving back to Hwy 24, we spotted several more bluebirds on the phone lines

[cobirds] Boulder County eagles and ducks

2015-02-02 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Lagerman Reservoir on Pike Road in Boulder County was mostly frozen over
last Saturday and there were 9 Bald Eagles (a mix of adults, immature, and
sub-adults) and 1 adult Golden Eagle throughout the morning. Another,
sub-adult Golden was on the north side of Haystack Mountain, finishing a
prairie dog kill.

Clover Basin Reservoir on Nelson Road was loaded with waterfowl: Coots,
Redheads, Common Mergansers, American Widgeon, Common Goldeneye, and 9
gorgeous Canvasbacks.

[cobirds] African Collared Dove request

2014-12-02 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
After reading about the very white African Collared Dove in Louisville,
I've noticed at least one very white dove among the hoards of Eurasian
Collared Doves that have invaded my backyard (and run the shier Mourning
Doves off!). I haven't gotten a decent look at the underneath of the tail
to see if it looks any different from the EuCoDos.

Could you post again the details of determining if it's an African or
Eurasian? I remember that it had to do with the under tail coverts, but I
don't remember all of the details.

Thanks!

[cobirds] Longmont Osprey chick put down

2014-09-04 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
As one of the monitors for the City of Longmont of the Osprey nest at 75th
and Nelson, it was heartbreaking to watch today as the Dept. of Wildlife
rescued one chick from that nest because she was tangled up in baling
twine. She was taken to the Raptor Rehab Center in Broomfield.
Unfortunately, the poor bird's foot was so mangled from her struggling to
get free that she was put down. At least she isn't suffering anymore.

I know many others stopped to watch this family of Osprey, taking advantage
of a nesting platform right at the end of the road. This includes many
pelatons of bikers. Some would stop to catch a glance through my spotting
scope and more than once I saw a biker with binoculars around his/her neck.

Happily, the other chick fledged and has been fishing on its own and will
follow its parents down to Mexico soon. This event is a sad reminder to all
of us who love these magnificent birds that farmers and ranchers need to be
educated not to leave plastic baling twine out in the fields where birds of
prey might pick it up for nesting material. Osprey love the stuff and it
can have lethal consequences.

Sadly,

[cobirds] Myrtle Warbler, House Wren, Osprey, baby GHO, and egg'-laying Osprey in Boulder County

2014-05-13 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
This morning (Tuesday), one Myrtle Warbler was hunting in a stand of
honeysuckles that largely survived this past Arctic blast, just east of
Blue Mountain Elementary School in west Longmont. An hour later, I
discovered a House Wren in my apple tree in west Longmont.

While monitoring the Osprey platform on N 75th for the City of Longmont
yesterday, I scanned a nearby grove of cottonwoods for Great Horned Owls
and found a very active owlet being fed a large rodent by its mother. The
chick doesn't have much tail yet, but is using its wings to lift enough to
hop through the branches of the trees.

The Osprey was laying eggs yesterday, by the way.

[cobirds] Wild Turkeys in Ft. Morgan and one in Longmont

Coming back from Kearney, NB this past Sunday (500K Sandhills at least!),
we passed about a dozen Wild Turkey toms, standing next to Interstate 76 at

Then, last night, Virginia Dionigi reported to the Foothills Audubon Bird

It was suggested by someone at Bird Club that the flooding last fall
displaced turkey populations to points further east than they normally live.

[cobirds] Barrows Goldeneyes and other ducks in Boulder County

2014-01-25 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
After Bill Prather reported a pair of Barrows Goldeneyes for the Foothills
Audubon Christmas Bird Count, Peter Hartlove and I have been periodically
checking out the spot just north of the bridge at highway 119 and 3rd Avenue,
east of Longmont. We park on the eastbound side of 119 and walk under the
bridge from the east side.

There is a pedestrian bridge that is still closed from the floods, and ducks
are occasionally hanging out under that, but if you walk under the bridge from
the east side, you'll see a deep pool just northwest of the bridge. We have
seen 5 or 6 pair of Barrows, several pair of Green Wing Teal, the occasional
Shoveler, and a Pied-billed Grebe.

Continue past the bridge, up the hill a bit, and you'll see a big pile of old
railroad ties. Behind those there's a pond. Here, we've seen about two dozen
Gadwalls, several Shovelers, and the occassional Coot. A female Kingfisher
fishes around there, too.

[cobirds] 5 Bonaparte's Gulls on Lagerman Res - Boulder County

very dark as well, but its forehead and crown are bright white. I first
spotted this bird on Thanksgiving Day in the pond across the road from

[cobirds] Update on west Longmont Barn Owls, Boulder County

2013-07-17 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
These Barn Owls have caused quite the stir! Lots of people have been
writing to me, asking if they can come see them.

I need to explain that the birds are nesting in the attic of an old barn
that is on private property, to which I do not have access. The City of
Longmont's raptor expert, Jim Krick, is aware of these birds now and he'll
be including them in the city's raptor monitoring. My guess is that there
is little to no access to even see the nest, unless the owner has an attic
door in the barn.

However, the Meadow Mountain subdivision is directly east of this farm and
there is an open space and sidewalk that runs along the farm's eastern
boundary. If you want to see/hear these guys, I would recommend parking on
Clover Basin Drive, just west of N. 75th (Clover Basin becomes Pike Road
west of 75th), and come into our open space to the north. The entrance is
on the west side of the culvert and the farm where the owls are is directly
ahead. We even have a few benches out there, where you can sit and just
listen to the chicks squawk at Mom! Recommended time to see them would be
around 8:30 or 9, but even once it's dark, you can sit out there and listen
to their vocalizations.

(Nathan, do you need to record Barnies???)

[cobirds] Owl update in Longmont (Boulder County)

2013-07-17 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I went out in slightly better light tonight and two owls were on the
ground. Thanks to Brian (really, THANK YOU, Brian!), I have come to the
conclusion that I likely mis-IDed the owls in west Longmont. They are bulky
and seem too large for Barn Owls. If they're Great-Horneds, it was a very
late brood because they are pale and have no visible horns. There was no
sign of an adult. The only vocalization is a high-pitched screech.

I'll be watching these guys and trying to get out even earlier (they were
out and on the ground at 8:30 tonight) to try and get a full-front view. So
far, I have only seen one from the back during the day (pale, pale, no
horns) and profiles in the dark. I will keep you updated, one way or the
other.

Very sorry if I mis-IDed them. Sometimes, wishful thinking clouds one's
judgement.

[cobirds] Clark's Grebe in Boulder County

off their tails.

[cobirds] White-faced Ibis in Boulder County

2013-05-13 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
A single, lone White-faced Ibis has been hanging around a small wet area
north of the Meadow Mountain subdivision, on the north side of Dry Creek
(between Dry Creek and Nelson). It's a low area, so it's difficult to see
from 75th, but you can access it easily by parking in front of Blue
Mountain Elementary on Mountain Drive. There's a parking barrier where the
road ends now. The tract north of the barrier is slated for development
soon. Follow the dirt road north for several hundred yards and it stops at
Dry Creek. The wet area is directly across.

Most springs, I see 30 Ibis in there, but so far, this is the first one.

There's a lovely little flock of Vesper Sparrows along that walk and they
have been singing their little birdie hearts out. (Nathan, do you need
Vesper Sparrow song?)

[cobirds] Cliff Swallows and Broad-tail Hummer in Boulder County

2013-04-29 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Cliff Swallows have returned to their nesting area just south and west of
Blue Mountain Elementary School in west Longmont. The birds were majorly
disturbed last year just as the young had fledged when the city decided to
destroy 5 cattail areas, including both sides of the bridge where the birds
were nesting. I am happy to see them return! A couple of scouts arrived
five days ago, but the colony showed up in force yesterday (4/28). It's the
Return of the Jedi!

One Broad-tail Hummingbird showed up in my yard just west of the elementary
school yesterday. I've put out one nectar feeder, but haven't seen any
activity yet.

[cobirds] House Wrens, Savannah Sparrows, and Grebes in Boulder County

2013-04-28 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Several House Wrens were singing in the riparian area along the St. Vrain
River between Hygiene and Lyons this morning. As well, there were 6
Savannah Sparrows foraging in the area of Refugia Lake on Boulder County
land. One Pied-Billed Grebe was on that lake, and 11 Westerns were on
McCall Lake, on Hwy 66.

[cobirds] Loggerhead Shrike, Sage Thrasher, and Marsh Wren in Boulder County

2013-04-24 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
A Sage Thrasher was foraging on the east side of Blue Mountain Elementary
School in west Longmont on Monday morning (4/22), before the snow storm hit.

Yesterday (4/23), a Loggerhead Shrike showed up at my bird feeders in west
Longmont. It is still there today, coming and going.

A Marsh Wren is inspecting a cattail area east of Blue Mountain Elementary
this morning (4/24).
