Re: [cobirds] Re: Larimer County gull report

2018-12-26 Thread markchavez
To comment on Brandon's post, are we confirming this gull is a Slaty-backed
Gull? Most of the sightings were viewed at a great distance with very distant
shots if any at all.  Referencing the Tufted Duck from Marsten many called the
duck until difinitive photos proved otherwise. I noticed Ebird confirmed the
sightings so I was wondering if I'm missing something. Just wondering if a
chase makes sense...

Not to cause trouble, I know the adult Slaty-backed Gull from Larimer County in
2000 that I saw, had bubble gum pink colored legs, does this bird have them.
In the photos, the bird shows pink legs, though not sure the bright pink I
remember with other Slaty-backeds I have seen, mostly from Alaska, and the one
in Colorado.  Other things on this bird look pretty good for Slaty-backed,
though hybrids of other species can be look like Slaty-backed like.
Good gulling, it is always interesting this time of year!

[cobirds] Photographic Big Year 2017

2017-12-31 Thread markchavez
Well, the year is coming to an end. For most of us, we start all over again
and set new goals to motivate ourselves to get back out in the field. This
past year, a few of good friends (David Starbuck, Art Hudak, and Darien
Obrien---a.k.a the Party Train) and I decided to set a goal of not only seeing
500 ABA species, but also getting photo evidence of each one. I must say it
was more difficult than I expected. We ended up spending more time in the
field, attempting to get the photo documentation. There were times when we saw
the bird and struck out because it vanished before getting the camera up. What
it did do was to get a group of working guys together, going on trips and
enjoying the best hobby in the world, while sharing laughs until our guts hurt,
and seeing amazing, beautiful areas in our state and beyond. Indisputably, the
best part was the camaraderie that we shared not only on our Sunday day trips,
but on the trips out of town. In the end, we were able to see and photograph
525 amazing ABA species(Last bird of the year was a Whiskered Screech Owl on
the 31st), which never would have happened without our first of the year
challenge. As we venture into a new year, I encourage you to try a group
challenge. At the end of the year, you are rewarded with amazing memories that
will last a lifetime!!! If you have time, take a look at our gallery that has
all 525 species photos: https://partytrain.smugmug.com/

[cobirds] CAPE MAY WARBLER--Chico Basin/Pueblo

2017-05-28 Thread markchavez
Today, Art Hudak, David Starbuck and I went to Chico Basin trying to catch the
tail end of migration. After seeing a beautiful Magnolia Warbler at the
headquarters(Pueblo) we decided to check out Rose Pond. The first bird of
interest was a beautiful, but very skittish Blue-headed Vireo. We then decided
to walk the north side of the pond. After walking the marshy, wet , and slow
area we were rewarded with a gorgeous CAPE MAY WARBLER. This bird was in a
tall cottonwood on the far north side.
We finished the day at Mineral Palace Park. While looking for the
Yellow-throated Warbler, we were given the finger and cussed at unprovoked
several times by a local cruiser. I guess he was trying to give us a bird to
look at!! Not long after we were able to locate not one but two
Yellow-throated Warblers! What a great late May day of birding. Photos (the
Party Train way) of these great rarities can be found below:

[cobirds] Broad-tailed Hummingbird--Jeffco

2017-04-04 Thread markchavez
On 3/24 I was totally surprised to see a Broad-tailed Hummingbird in my
backyard in Lakewood/Green Mtn. This is by far the earliest record for this
species by almost a month. The earliest record for the yard was 4/22 in 2015.
After my sighting on 3/24 I rushed and put up a feeder and the bird returned.
The next day I left on a trip to Mexico to find the bird at the feeder when I
returned a week later. As I write this post, the bird is at the feeder with
snow falling in the background. I guess its never to early to put up a feeder!

Re: [cobirds] Some comments on the question "Is that bird countable?"

2016-12-14 Thread markchavez
Joe, I'm glad you brought this subject up, since I have had this friendly
debate over the past year. It can be very confusing to the new birder when
they hear a bird is not "countable". It would be nice for Ebird to bold the
non-countable birds and not count them in their list. I totally understand the
reason for the exotics needing to be tracked, so they can see if the population
is expanding and self-sustaining. I have also witnessed the new birder
traveling miles for a Red Peafowl, African Collared Dove, Greylag Goose, or
Mute Swan. When they tell someone about their new lifer, they get a smile and
a comment about how it's not countable. The comment is usually followed with
"what?", or "Why would it appear on a need list then?" Bolding the bird would
at least give an opportunity to educate the new birder and give them a choice
if they want to still go see the bird. I actually chased a Mandarin Duck at the
Wheat Ridge Greenbelt even though I knew it not countable, because I wanted to
see this beautiful bird!

"Is that bird countable?" is a common question among birders, with no simple
answer.

First one needs to consider what the criteria are for "countability."
When a young birder starts off, his list may include these birds:
robin,
hawk,
Canadian Goose
duck,
and "Yellow-billed Loon," identified by a stranger and viewed through his
Aunt's scope.

That is a personal list and quite valid. It's a first step to becoming a
birder, and many of us have done that in the misspent days of our youth.

And a birder of any age can keep a list of any kind. I have friends who keep a
list of all birds they have seen in Colorado, including at the Zoo!

But once a birder gets to the stage of wanting to compare his own list to other
birders' lists, and maintain a reputation, the question
comes up, "Can I count it?" In other words, "What are the rules of this game?"
and "Do other birders include that species on their lists?"

Let's face it, "The Lure of the List" is strong, and many birders have a gene
for competition. Some disparage "listers," but there are few experienced birders
who do not keep lists. And there are "mental lists." I have found that if a
birder disparages "listers," they can usually tell you what birds they have
seen, thanks to their mental list.

Most of us follow the rule that the Colorado Field Ornithologists set down some
years ago: For purposes of comparing one's state and county
lists to those of other birders, the bird must be on the official Colorado
list. http://coloradocountybirding.org/Checklists.aspx
That applies to state lists, year lists, county lists, etc. Mute Swan, Graylag
Goose, Monk Parakeet are not on the official CO list and most of us don't
include them on our lists.
That way I can be sure my list has not been "padded" by exotics.

That official CFO list has been generated over the decades by expert volunteers
on the Colorado Birds Record Committee, and it's maintained with care and
scientific judgement. The CBRC went to great lengths
(stable isotope analysis) to conclude that a taxidermy mount of an Emperor
Goose shot in Colorado was probably not of wild origin. It's important that our
state list is a "clean" one. Then it's comparable to
the lists from other states, for example.

And the fine points of what birds are countable are spelled out by the American
Birding Association (ABA):
http://listing.aba.org/aba-recording-rules/
There you'll find obvious guidelines like, "Don't count roadkill. Don't count
birds in cages." And there you'll find some fine points such as, "When a bird
has been caught in a
net and banded, how many net marks must fade before you can count it?"

eBird wants us to document exotics to watch for trends and changes. Witness the
multitude of exotic cage birds, parrots and parakeets, that are alive, breeding
and well in Miami, for example.
So in summary, yes, report exotics to eBird, but when you do, the totals shown
there on county or state or year lists, etc are not really comparable to
others, who may have boldly
gone into the field counting every Mandarin Duck and Jungle Fowl out there.
You only have one chance to lose your reputation.

[cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake---Pueblo Reservoir

2016-10-31 Thread markchavez
Today, I took the two hour drive to Pueblo Reservoir hoping to see the rare
Black-legged Kittiwake. Thanks to Loch Kilpatrick for informing me the bird
was being seen below the visitor center on the southeast portion of the lake.
When I drove up, Gwen Moore was looking at this great bird!! Thank you,
Brandon Percival, for finding and reporting this great bird and keeping
everyone updated on the location details. Pictures of this bird can be seen

[cobirds] Nashville Warbler--Bear Creek Lake Park/Jeffco

This afternoon, I decided to check out Bear Creek Lake around Soda Lake. It
was very birdy with 39 species in only an hour. It felt like it was the peak
of migration instead of the very end. The best bird was a Nashville Warbler

lost sight of the bird and was unable to locate it again. Other birds seen were:

[cobirds] Bear Creek Lake Park/Jeffco

2016-05-16 Thread markchavez
This raining morning, I stopped by both Bear Creek Lake Park. Before the rains
started, I found a male Tennessee Warbler and the Blackpoll Warbler from
yesterday. I returned to the park later in the day after the rain stopped and
found the Tennessee again along with yesterday's female Blackburnian Warbler.
This park continues to have large numbers of warblers among the aphid infested
wild plum. Yesterday evening I stopped by Harriman Lake Park(Lakewood) and had
a Northern Parula. These two areas have been productive this spring and should
be checked the next couple of days.

Re: [cobirds] Black-throated Gray Warbler Harriman Lake Park (Jefferson County

2016-05-13 Thread markchavez
I went to Harriman after receiving a call from Tom Behnfield regarding the
Black-throated Gray Warbler. I didn't arrive until 630 to find a quiet woods.
I started walking west when I was able to find the BTGW working his way to the
west along with many warblers. He finally went to the Southwest boundary of
the park with a large group of warblers including a Northern Parula. Most of
the flock started to head back east toward the original sightings but I was
never able to re-locate the Black-throated Gray or Northern Parula. They may
have continued SW into the adjacent neighborhood. Birds I had in a half hour
included:

Yellow-rumped Warbler--many
Black-throated Gray Warbler--1
Orange-crowned Warbler--1
Yellow Warbler--5
Northern Parula--1
Western Wood Peewee--1
Black-headed Grosbeak--1
Western Tanager--1

There has been a Snow Goose reported on ebird from Crown Hill and the adjacent
Paramount Park. I was able to get photos of this strange looking large bird on
the 25th. The bill definitely is lacking the grin patch on the bill. The bill
and legs are a bright orange like a Greater White-fronted Goose. Also, today at
Blue Heron park in west Littleton there was a Greater White-fronted
Goose(continuing) and immature Snow Goose. I have a photo of the strange

[cobirds] Crow Valley Campground/Weld

Since I posted from the field, I thought I should send a follow-up post
regarding Crow Valley. The campground was fairly birdy in both the northwest
and southwest parts of the park. The first bird I saw was the continuing
Red-bellied Woodpecker. In the NW part of the park, I ran into a flock of Pine
Siskins and noticed some movement in a cedar. I was surprised to see a
White-eyed Vireo. I moved to the SW and noticed a lot of Robins going in and
out of the Cedar. In the cedar was a Townsend's Solitaire, Orange-crowned
Warbler, Kinglets, and the White-eyed Vireo appeared again. I was surprised the
vireo moved along with me to the opposite end of the park! There were also
several Brown Creepers hugging the activity. Overall, an enjoyable warm morning
in the campground. Photos of the birds can be seen below:

[cobirds] RE: Cobirds vs Ebird Reporting

2015-10-30 Thread markchavez

Recently, I have noticed a trend of good to great chaseable birds not being
reported to CObirds but instead just added to the eBird checklist. The reason
for the email is that yesterday, a Great-crested Flycatcher was reported from
the Denver Botanical Gardens at Chatfield around 8:40 a.m. After looking at the
photos attached to the checklist, I'm struggling to rule out a Brown-crested
Flycatcher. The problem with this kind of reporting is that you're not hearing
about the bird until the next day. A few weeks ago, a Tri-colored Heron was
reported to CObirds and many people were able to see the bird before it
disappeared the following day. I'm not trying to criticize a person's decision
of reporting, because it is ultimately their choice. I'm trying to get a better
understanding of why this trend is increasing so rapidly?

Re: [cobirds] Wren fatalities

2015-07-13 Thread markchavez
We had a situation happen this spring with this kind of behavior. We were
thrilled to have Red-breasted Nuthatches nesting in one of our boxes here in
Lakewood. I watched the activity as the birds went in and out of the box for
nearly two weeks. One morning, I heard the male calling over and over outside
of the box. The next day I noticed the wrens were inspecting the nest. I
grabbed a ladder and looked inside to find three pierced nestlings. The
nuthatches moved on and the wrens took over the box. We also had Flickers
nesting in a box to find their nestlings thrown about the yard and Starlings in
the box. We sealed up the hole with popsicle sticks to keep the Starlings out.
After much persistence the Starlings gave up but the Flickers never returned.
Nature is cruel!!

[cobirds] Wren fatalities

CObirders, I'm puzzled. Last month we hung a Wren box and got a tenant almost
immediately. This week for two days I watched a wren bugging and carrying
insects back to the box. Then yesterday I found a wriggling hatchling in death
throws on the ground beneath the box and another hatchling dead a little
further away on the ground covered with ants. The dead bird, though further
from the box, still had the shell with the body. Just above my head there was a
wren watching me from the house opening. The one still alive had a tiny bloody
hole on the back of its head that looked like a beak pinch mark from where it
was tossed from the box.

What the heck happened? Did the parent kill the hatchlings? Has anyone seen
this happen before? There is still a Wren coming and going but not with food.

Perplexed,

Myrna LugerAcross from Horsetooth Mtn Pk

[cobirds] RE: Golden-winged Warbler--Butterfly Woods/Larimer

2015-05-23 Thread markchavez
This morning, I woke up early and headed over to Crow Valley Campground.
When I got there I was greeted with a sign that said, Road Closed. No
Camping or Walk-ins. My mood changed when I read a post from John Shenot that
he found a Golden-winged Warbler in Butterfly Woods. I thought my chances were
slim since almost two hours had passed since the sighting. As I got out of the
car, I ran into John who gave me directions to the area. Thanks to John for
finding this great bird! It didn't take long before hearing the bird's
secondary call over the roaring river. A few minutes later I got great looks at
this beautiful bird! Before leaving, we(Loch Kilpatrick and Glen Walbek) were
able to locate the female Black-throated Gray Warbler and a Northern
Waterthrush. Before the downpour I tried my luck at Lee Martinez Park. I only
got 10 minutes before the downpour but got 2 Broad-winged Hawks in the woods
and 2 flyover Sandhill Cranes. Photos of the Golden-winged and Black-throated
Gray can be seen below:

http://jaeger29.smugmug.com/BIRDS/RARE-AND-UNCOMMON-2015/i-5RPgKTH

Before going home I decided to bird a sunny Welchester Tree Park. The park
was extremely birdy with the highlight being a Blue-headed Vireo. Migrants
seen were:

 10 Western Tanagers
   1 Western Wood Peewe
   3 Dusky Flycatchers
   2 Least Flycatchers
   1 Blue-headed Vireo
   3 Plumbeous Vireo
   2 Warbling Vireo
   1 Macgillvray's Warbler
   1 Blue-winged Warbler
   3 Wilson's Warbler
   1 Orange-crowned Warbler
   1 Audubon's warbler
   5 Yellow Warbler
   1 Black-headed Grosbeak
   2 Clay-colored Sparrow
   2 Lazuli Bunting

[cobirds] RE: Blue winged Warbler---Welchester/jeffco

2015-05-13 Thread markchavez

Here is a little more information on the Blue-winged Warbler found today at
Welchester Tree Park. After walking the wooded trail and finding 4
Orange-crowned Warblers, 1 Wilson's Warbler, and a calling Dusky Flycatcher, I
walked over to the eastern boundary of the park. This is the location were the
Blue-winged Warbler was seen last year. Far to the NW I could here the buzzy
call of the Blue-winged Warbler. I crossed the creek to the north and walked
uphill to the boundary with the elementary school. I could hear the call but
it was well to the east of this corner in private property. After pishing, the
bird moved closer until he was in view. The bird continued to call but moved
back to private property well to the east. This afternoon, Loch Kilpatrick
refound the bird in last year's location. The park is just west of 8th and
Simms. I feel very confident that this is last year's bird. This is the third
time in very recent time a rare Blue-winged Warbler has been seen in the park.
Is there a chance the bird is successful in his attempt to breed well east in
private property? Why has no one seen a female if so? Why would a bird return
without having success the year before? Is he hybridizing with a yellow? Who
knows...Photos of the bird can be seen below:

It's funny that and I Matt Crook and I had the same bird!! The undertail

have a strong eyering. My feeling was that this was a bird more in a weird
transition than a hybrid. Not saying I'm right but just an opinion.

[cobirds] Jeffco Birding 4/22

2015-04-22 Thread markchavez
Today, I had three hours to bird. There was definitely a push of spring
migrants working through Jeffco. Belmar had an early young male Western
Tanager, 7Yellow-rumped Warblers(Audubon's), 6 American Avocets, 2 Blue-winged
Teal, a Wilson's Snipe,a Say's Phoebe, and 2 Brown-headed Cowbirds. A 15
minute stop at Denver West had a Hermit Thrush, Chipping Sparrows, Ruby-crowned
Kinglet, House Wren, and several Yellow-rumped Warblers. Bear Creek Lake Park
had Yellow-headed Blackbirds, 3 Cinnamon Teal, 2 Blue-winged Teal, Greater
Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpiper, 2 Eared Grebes, and 2 Willets. I finally ended
the afternoon at Red Rocks and had 35-40 White-throated Swifts. In the 3 hours
I had an enjoyable 52 species!
In my yard, I have a couple of Red-breasted Nuthatches that have take up
residence in a birdbox! Unfortunately, the Mountain Chickadees (who nested in
our yard last year) are losing the battle of trying to nest in last year's bird
box. It is too close to the nuthatches that are proving dominant. I would
have never guessed that these two mountain/foothill species would be battling
for a nesting spot here in Lakewood. The poor Black-capped Chickadees have no
chance!

By the way, as I was writing his email, the first Broad-tailed Hummingbird of
the year visited my feeder!

[cobirds] Red Rocks Update/Jeffco

2014-11-11 Thread markchavez
This morning, I went up to Red Rocks at 730 to throw down lots of millet(no
milo--the red seed found in cheaper mixes that goes uneaten!) and sunflower
seed. It didn't take long for the tons of juncos, American Tree Sparrow(FOS),
jays, Spotted Towhees, Song Sparrows and House Finches to find the seed. Both
the adult and immature Golden-crowned Sparrows came in for the millet under the
apple tree. Things were scattered for awhile in the 14 degree temperatures when
a Sharp-shinned flew in . Before I left, I placed lots of sunflower on the
wall hoping to attract some Rosy-finches. I wouldn't be surprised if this
week's cold weather brings them down in a day or so.
On Sunday, I birded Denver West for only an hour. The place was extremely
birdy and had lots of Cedar Waxwings, Red Crossbills(35+), Bushtits,
Yellow-rumped Warblers(4),Brown Creepers, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and
Ruby-crowned Kinglets(10+). This place should be watched for some good birds
in the next few weeks. There are lots of berry producing trees and pines in
this business park off I-70 and Denver West Parkway. In years past, Pine
Warblers have over-wintered in this very birdy fall park!

[cobirds] Uncommon birds 10/29

2014-10-29 Thread markchavez
Today, I started out the morning in Coal Creek Canyon and got great views of
the female Magnificent Hummingbird. Thanks to Adam Jack for allowing everyone
to view this rare Colorado hummingbird. I then headed to Washington Park and
saw the accommodating immature Surf Scoter(Thanks to Joe Roller for reporting
this bird). My luck ran out as I headed to Red Rocks hoping that the
Golden-crowned Sparrow would return for the fifth straight year. No luck! I
have been trying to take millet up 2-3 times a week but the seed is long gone
every time I return. If anyone heads to Red Rocks please throw some seed down.
This area seems to always attract some good birds with consistent food behind
the trading post. A few photos of today's birds can be seen in the gallery
below:

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow---Jeffco/Backyard

2014-10-12 Thread markchavez

This morning, I had a White-throated Sparrow(tan morph) show up in the
backyard pre-front. He has been here all day eating underneath the niger in
suburban Lakewood. This year it looks like we have an irruption of Pine
Siskens and Red-breasted Nuthatches along the Front Range.
On Friday, I went to see if our Golden-crowned Sparrow has returned again.
The area was totally void of seed so I spread lots of millet and sunflower. It
didn't take long for White-crowns, juncos, towhees and others to show. No
Golden-crowned yet!!

[cobirds] Last Chance --Washington County. Philadelphia Vireo

2014-09-28 Thread markchavez
Today, Darien Obrien and I headed to Last Chance and the Playas east of Anton.
Last Chance was very birdy.   The best birds were PHILADELPHIA VIDEO,
White-throated Sparrow, and possible Tennessee Warbler.  The playas had 2
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, Pectoral Sandpiper,  and many other shorebirds.

[cobirds] Mirants 9/12 Lakewood/Jeffco

2014-09-13 Thread markchavez

Yesterday, I decided to bird Belmar Historic Park once the drizzle and storm
were on their way out. Belmar was pretty quiet except for a Loggerhead Shrike
(first for the park), and a large flock of birds that had Wilson's(many),
Townsend's(3), Yellow-rumps, Warbling Vireo, and Chipping Sparrows. I decided
to watch my small suburban yard between 2p-4p. The yard was extremely active
now that the front had moved on. I'm curious how the birding will be behind
the front. Here is the list of some of the 24 species seen during this brief
period:
Townsend's Warbler
Cassin's Vireo
Warbling Vireo--3
Wilson's Warbler--5
Western Tanager--5
Orange-crowned Warbler
Red-breasted Nuthatch--4
Mountain Chickadee
Green-tailed Towhee
Spotted Towhee
Pine Sisken--15
Black-chinned Hummingbird(many including a few males)
Broad-tailed Hummingbird(Many including a couple of males)
Red-wing Blackbird-4
Western Scrub Jay--4

[cobirds] Baird's Sparrows--El Paso County

2014-08-31 Thread markchavez
This morning, I was able to find 3 Baird's Sparrows along Drennan Rd west of
Hemmingway. Many birders I came across had seen several Baird's in their
searches. I'm guessing there are more than 4-5 Baird's Sparrow in the area.
Great Colorado bird!! Photos of the bird can be seen below:

[cobirds] 4 Hummingbird Day--Lakewood-Green Mtn/Jeffco

2014-07-15 Thread markchavez

This morning, in my backyard, I had all four male hummingbird species within an
hour. Two Calliope were joined by a Rufous, and several Black-chinned and
Broad-tailed Hummingbirds. This is always a fun time of the year when the
colorful males are moving through! On Saturday, I went up to Mt. Evans and had
great looks at White-tailed Ptarmigan and Brown-capped Rosy Finches. A walk
around Echo Lake was extremely slow!! Did not get any Gray Jays, Nutcrackers,
or Steller's Jays! Photos of the Ptarmigans, Rosy Finches, and Calliope can be

[cobirds] Few things still moving through/ Jeffco

2014-06-18 Thread markchavez
This morning while taking out the trash, I heard a Cordilleran Flycatcher and
than saw the bird as it was calling away. He then moved to the backyard as he
chased the Mountain Chickadees and their young(nested in our box for the second
straight year). While watching the activity which included hummingbirds, it
had the feel of being in the foothills a few miles to our west instead of
suburbia Lakewood!

[cobirds] Father's Day in Jeffco

2014-06-16 Thread markchavez
I started the day looking at the Blue-winged Warbler(Welchester Tree Park)
before my family woke up. I never get tired of looking at this beauty! Then I
made a second attempt ( the first time the road was closed ) for the Acorn and
Red-headed Woodpeckers(Sony Pass Rd near Cheesman Reservoir) with my wife and
daughter. It didn't take long before both birds made an appearance on this very
cloudy day. The Red-headed Woodpeckers made it very clear that they have a low
tolerance for the misplaced Acorn Woodpecker. He would fly to the general area
just to get chased of over and over again. Photos of the birds can be seen

[cobirds] Crow Valley Campground--Weld

2014-05-20 Thread markchavez
To echo Glen Walbek, Crow Valley was special today. It was one of the best

able to bird the other side of the park due to the high water flowing in this
area. The highlight was seeing the female KENTUCKY WARBLER and birding with
some great people!! Photos of this bird can be seen below:

I was at Crow Valley Campground with a few birders including Joe Roller. We
were alerted to a Common Poorwill on the west side of the campground on the
other side of the fence. The bird was perched on a small stick allowing great
views. After getting home, Joe Roller realized that the bird looked more like
a Whip-poor-will than the assumed Common Poorwill. The last photo(side view)
was taken by Joe Roller show field marks supporting Whip-poor-will. Here are

[cobirds] Hooded x Yellow Warbler ??--Roxborough

2014-05-17 Thread markchavez
This morning, I to look for the Hooded Warbler in Roxborough. Thanks to Greg
Pasquariello's great directions I was able to easily locate the bird. Several
time I noticed the lack of tolerence the bird had for a male Yellow Warbler.
After taking a good look at the bird I think I understand why. This bird has
the hood of the Hooded and the breast streaking of the male Yellow Warbler.
The undertail coverts are a mix of the two. Does anyone know of documentation
of this hybrid mix? Pictures of this bird can be seen below:

Yesterday, was a lot of fun at Crow Valley Campground. With all the water

There were a lot of birders (and birds) at Crow Valley Campground but since I
don't see any posts, here is my take on the proceedings. I would encourage
others who were out there to fill in the inevitable blanks in the following:

Highlights:
Blackpoll Warbler (at least 3 males (2 along the creek at the eastern part of
the south fenceline (i.e. due s of the easternmost bathroom) and 1 in the
northwest corner near the Group Shelter)

Sora (heard north of the Mourning Dove Trail ne of the Group Shelter)
Northern Waterthrush (at least 8, others I think might have estimated even
more!)
White-throated Sparrow (1 near the antique farm equipment)
Cassin's Kingbird (1 near the antique farm equipment)
Hermit Thrush (few)
Red-breasted Nuthatch (at least 1)
Gray Flycatcher (1 south of the Main Picnic Shelter just s of the fence in
mustard)
Plumbeous Vireo (1)
Townsend's Warbler (1f)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (2 males eating Siberian Elm seed along the west
fenceline)
Ovenbird (at least 3)

MANY, MANY:
Swainson's Thrush (75+?)
Common Yellowthroat (20?)
Lincoln's Sparrow (30?)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (40?)
Green-tailed and Spotted Towhees
White-crowned Sparrow (all Gambel's that I saw, but I didn't glass several of
them)
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (10+)
Gray Catbird (10+)

NADA, NADA:
Orioles
Tanagers
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Swamp Sparrow
Wood Thrush
Pewees
Herons
Broad-winged Hawk

Then there were the water birds that in modern times sound almost crazy to
mention in the same sentence as CVCG:
White-faced Ibis (2)
Spotted Sandpiper (1)
Wilson's Phalarope (at least 4)
Northern Shoveler (several)
Blue-winged Teal (several)
Cinnamon Teal (1 male)
And I heard a report somebody saw a Virginia Rail walking down the middle of
the creek!

Other birds reported by folks I talked to today:
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH
Veery
Ash-throated Flycatcher
Black-and-white Warbler

Lastly, there was a Lazuli Bunting (molting m) seen at a feeder in Briggsdale)

Total of 61 species for CVCG/Briggsdale (that I saw, at least 65 by everybody
as best I know, probably several more).

That's an impressive number for one little place, and makes me wish all the
more the USFS could see fit to buy some water rights and ensure at least a
trickle is in that place most of the time. Seems like it would do a lot more
good there than down fracking holes.

[cobirds] Crow Valley and Lower Latham 5/9

2014-05-10 Thread markchavez
Yesterday, Daren O'Brien and I went to Crow Valley Camprground and made a
quick stop at Lower Latham. Crow Valley was still birdy with very little
turnover or new arrivals. The birds of interest were Black-and-White Warbler,
Ovenbird, Broad-winged Hawk and a nice looking Macgillvray's Warbler. The rest
of the migrants( Lincoln Sparrows, yellowthroats, yellow-rumps, gnatcatchers,
house wrens, western kingbirds, etc) were in good numbers. Only one
vireo(Plumbeous), one Thrush(Swainson's) no tanagers, 2 orioles, and 0
grosbeaks.
The number of shorebirds at Lower Latham had a sharp drop since last Sunday.
The best bird here was a low flyover from a Sandhill Crane! While birding at
Lower Latham a truck approached us while bird along RD 48. We gave them a
friendly way but didn't get one in return. He approached my vehichle and
looked like he was taking my license plate number and then drove away. I just
wanted everyone to be aware that the behavior continuesA few photos of the
uncommon birds can be seen below:

[cobirds] Northern Parula --Wheat Ridge Greenbelt

2014-05-08 Thread markchavez
This morning the Northern Parula continued east of the bridge at Prospect Park
and north of Clear Creek. It was easy to locate as the bird sang non-stop in
the cool morning air. It eventually flew to the south side of Clear Creek into
private property. I was only able to find a large flock of Yellow-rumps and a
couple of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers in a half hour. Photos of the Northern Parula
can be seen below:

[cobirds] Worm-eating Warbler--Cherry Creek SP

2014-05-06 Thread markchavez
This morning , I was disappointed I couldn't chase after the Worm-eating
Warbler because of a dental appointment. I finally made it to the Smoky Hill
Picnic Area with low expectations after hearing the bird was moving north last
seen at the pond to the north. When I arrived, several birders had seen the
birds with great views a couple of minutes before my arrival. Twenty minutes
later I was enjoying this great bird around 115pm in a small deciduous tree.
He then flew in a dense pine were he spent a good half hour before
disappearing. Photos of this bird can be seen below:

This morning, I went to Red Rocks and saw the Fox Sparrow(slate-colored) and
Peregrine Falcon reported by Mike Henwood yesterday. The Peregrine Falcons
look like they're going to next again on Ship Rock. I saw several groups of
White-throated Swifts but struck out on the Golden-crowned Sparrow. Photos of
both the Fox Sparrow and Peregrine Falcon(very distant nesting behavior) can be

Hello

birders,

Went

to Wheat Ridge Greenbelt this sunny, cold afternoon to try to relocate Paula

Hansley’s possible flycatcher, but the wind was gale force, so that bird is

probably now in Kansas. I did hear a Virginia’s Rail next to the new boardwalk
south

of Bass Lake, which is south of Tabor Lake. Like last spring there are

Double-crested Cormorants nesting on the island in Tabor Lake. On Prospect Lake

there were both Lesser and Greater Scaup—hope I labeled them right.

Here

Come she will…

[cobirds] Red Rocks/Jeffco

2013-12-05 Thread markchavez
Thanks for everybody's advice on removing the cat from the Red Rocks area. I
arrived this morning in the freezing temps and noticed Gwen Moore had placed
seed in the area. While placing sunflower on the stone wall I heard a few Rosy
Finches circling above. After waiting for at least an hour my fears were erased
when the Golden-crowned Sparrow perched in the thicket and begin eating millet.
Not long after 4 Black and 4 Gray-crowned Rosy Finches appeared. When I first
arrived I noticed very few birds at the feeders. Most birds were perched in
full sun trying to thaw out!!! A few photos of the Rosy Finches and
Golden-crowned can be seen below:

[cobirds] Black Rosy Finch--Red Rocks/Jeffco

2013-12-04 Thread markchavez
Today at 1145, I brushed off the stone wall and laid sunflower along the top.
Within 1/2 hour I had two Black Rosy Finches. They ate for about 15 minutes
before flying off with two others(not sure were these guys came from or which
kind of Rosy-Finch). In the hour I was there, I did not see the
Golden-crowned Sparrow. He may be there but it seemed like everything else was
eating. There was large numbers of juncos, including a White-winged, 6 Spotted
Towhees, lots of Scrub Jays, adult White-crowned Sparrow, several Song Sparows,
2 Magpies, and others. The last few times I was there, I noticed a cat
skulking in the brush behind the feeders. I try to chase it off but it doesn't
take long before it returns. If the cat hasn't already, the chances are
increasing that he may bring an end to the 4-year run of this Golden-crown. Any
ideas on what we can do?

[cobirds] Boulder Warblers

2013-11-17 Thread markchavez
There were a lot of birders enjoying the show at Center Green Drive in Boulder
today in the sun and wind. The Pine and Northern Parula ate non-stop in the
aphid tree while the Bay-breasted would take breaks for an hour and disappear.
It's surprising that warblers are the only birds taking advantage of this food
supply. Looking at my photos I noticed this Pine Warbler has a huge beak.

[cobirds] Evening Grosbeaks---Lakewood-Green Mtn/Jeffco

2013-11-07 Thread markchavez
This morning, we had six Evening Grosbeaks that were eating Washington
Hawthorne berries in the backyard. They seemed to totally ignore the platform
feeder loaded with sunflower seed a few feet away. We also had a Townsend's
Solitaire feasting on the ripe berries. Unfortunately, it won't be long before
the House Finches, Robins, and squirrels strip the tree of these bird friendly
berries! Also, we have 4 Western Scrub Jays battling our Blue Jays for the
morning peanuts. We usually have lots of Blue Jays and only one Scrub Jay that
sporadically visits the yard. This year no nuthatches, siskens , and very few
goldfinches. We do have our breeding pair of Mountain Chickadees..

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow--Red Rocks/Jeffco

2013-10-29 Thread markchavez

Today, as I pulled into the Red Rocks Trading Post I saw the post by Christian
Nunes that the Teller Farm's Golden-crowned Sparrow returned. The feeders and
the ground were void of seed. I threw down some millet and waited for the
birds to show up. The first bird out of the thicket was the dapper
Golden-crowned Sparrow!! This is the fourth year this bird has wintered at Red
Rocks. He first showed up as an immature in the winter of 2009. I watched the
area for 45 minutes and had Scrub Jays(10), White-crowned Sparrow(1), Song
Sparrows(3) Juncos(10), Spotted Towhees(3), Pine Sisken(1), and the other
typical Red Rocks birds. This is the time of the year when the Red Rocks
feeders can get interesting! Photos of this bird can be seen at the gallery

We also enjoyed the stunning White-faced Ibis. While watching the phalarope a
Prairie Falcon made a swoop toward the west pond. The phalarope froze and
hunkered close to the water for a few minutes until danger passed. I'm not

Sorry for the late post, but as I reviewed the posts of birds seen at
Chatfield on Sat., Oct. 19, I didn't see a Red-necked Grebe. Michael Kiessig
and I birded the Handicapped Fisherman's pier and the Marina area Saturday
morning and in addition to the Pomarine Jaeger, Common Loons, and young
Sabine's Gull, we observed a Red-necked Grebe and a Bonaparte's Gull. Mike

[cobirds] Late Hummingbird--Lakewood/Jeffco

2013-10-20 Thread markchavez

Our backyard in Green Mtn was very active this afternoon before the front moved
in. We had a very late Townsend's Warbler and a couple of Ruby-crowned
Kinglets. The biggest surprise was a late hummingbird that has visited the
hummingbird feeders a couple of times. The initial identification is that of a
Black-chinned Hummingbird. This is the latest date for a hummingbird in our
backyard. We had a Anna's Hummingbird visit the 14-16th of October back in
2011. I always leave our hummingbird feeders as late as possible wishing for a
rarity or assisting a late hummingbird on his journey south.

My neighbors, Walt and Linda Knudsen, have had a Lewis's Woodpecker in the open
space behind their house the last two days. I does flycatching from a tall dead
tree and visits other dead trees in the vicinity. This bird's plumage is a
little ragged, perhaps a year bird undergoing first molt. I would like to claim
it as a yard bird but cannot so far. Neither of us has seen this species before
in this area.

The address is 413 S. Divinney Street, Lakewood. This is in the Green Mountain
area at the upper end of W. Dakota Avenue. Just go to the fence in the backyard
and wait if the bird is not in the dead tree directly behind their house. Fair
photo opportunity, best in morning light.

[cobirds] RE: Lewis's Woodpecker Lakewood Jefferson County

2013-10-15 Thread markchavez

This afternoon around 5pm I was able to see Lewis's Woodpecker from Walt and
Linda Knudsen's backyard. I got great looks while the bird perched in a dead
tree in the flurries directly behind their property. This was the first time
I've seen a Lewis's Woodpecker in Jeffco. On the way out I was able to thank
Walt for allowing birders to his backyard. Thank you Bob Shade for getting the
word out!

[cobirds] Jeffco after the Cold Snap

2013-10-05 Thread markchavez
Early this am(7am) while replacing the hummingbird solution, I noticed a female
Rose-breasted Grosbeak trying to chisel sunflower seeds from the ice. I went
down to the yard and put in fresh sunflowers in the feeder. The bird didn't
flush until I was actually pouring the seeds He flew a few feet to the
nearest bush but never returned. About an hour later, I noticed a warbler
fliting in a small pine. My initial thought was that I had a orange-crowned
warbler. Once I got my binoculars on the bird I noticed the clean white
undertail coverts. It turned out to be a Tennessee Warbler! The yard was very
active including Chipping Sparrows, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Black-chinned
Hummingbird, a possible female/imm Ruby-throated Hummingbird(photos have been
sent to hummingbird expert in Arkansas when bird showed up on 10/3), lots of
Lesser Goldfinches, Dark-eyed Junco(Pink-sided), Mountain Chickadees, Western
Scrub Jay, and the rest of the normal backyard birds. I'm wondering if others
found the yard or other areas of the Front Range very birdy after the cold snap
last night. Unfortunately, I had to go to work shortly after seeing the
Tennessee:-(

[cobirds] Prothonotary Warbler---Jeffco

2013-09-10 Thread markchavez
Today, I received a call from Joe Roller saying that Doug Kibbe and Mackenzie ?
(terrible with names) had a Prothonotary Warbler at Main Reservoir (NW corner
of Jewell and Kipling). Within 10 minutes, they got me on the bird. The
gorgeous warbler was hanging with a flock of Bushtits, Chickadees, and Wilson's
Warblers. Also in the flock was a Western Wood Pewee and a Townsend's Warbler.
I then went to Belmar and got soaked in the rain, but was able to find 3
Townsend Warblers and a Cassin's Vireo on the west end of the park. Thanks to
Mackenzie and Doug on finding this great bird!! Photos of the Prothonotary
Warbler can be found in the rare to uncommon galley below:

[cobirds] Mountain Chickadees(nesting)---Lakewood/Jeffco

2013-06-16 Thread markchavez
I call this time of the year June Gloom. Migration is over and the
hummingbirds(Rufous and Calliope) have yet to start their southern migration.
This year, I've had the fortune of enjoying Mountain Chickadees nesting in our
front yard in SW Lakewood. These guys have driven out both our Black-capped
Chickadees and House Wrens. Does anyone out there have any information on how
uncommon this nesting location is? The Bob Bob book has a record from
Boulder in the 70's and one from Wheat Ridge in 1982. Thanks for any
information you can provide of these Chickadees nesting east of the foothills!

[cobirds] Crow Valley and Norma's Grove / Weld County

2013-05-14 Thread markchavez
Thinking that things couldn't be any slower than Barr Lake(mentioned in
earlier post by Loch Kilpatrick ), I headed to Crow Valley Campground. The
only birds of interest were a Common Poorwill, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Orchard
Orioles, one Hermit Thrush, a few Swainson's Thrush and a Dusky Flycatcher.
All the birds reported yesterday were long gone!! The poor representation of
warblers included a couple of Yellows, a few Yellow-rumps, and one
Orange-crowned. No Vireos.. No Tanagers...No Grosbeaks! I can't remember
this place being so slow in mid-May.
My next stop was a more normal looking Norma's Grove. This small oasis held a
Northern Waterthrush and a beautiful Veery. Photos of the Northern Waterthrush
can be seen in the rare and uncommon gallery below:

[cobirds] Blackpoll Warbler--Main Reservoir/ Jeffco

This morning, I went over to Main Reservoir and ran into Vince Friedman who had
just seen a Blackpoll Warbler. Within 15 minutes I was able to locate this
bird who was being harrased by the many Yellow-rumped Warblers. A few Western
Tanagers, Orange-crowned, and a Savannah Sparrow summed up the migrants.
Photos of this bird can be seen in the rare to uncommon gallery below:
